- This is Part 9 of the Singlehanded Man Overboard Self Rescue Series where I review all the tactics and ideas that have come out of both testing and other sailor's comments that I have covered in the first 8 Episodes. They include the use of nylon re-boarding ladders, a way to use mechanical aids to climb back into the boat, stopping the boat under power, stopping the boat under sail, using a climbing harness for self-rescue instead of an offshore harness, using a bridle at the water line to traverse the boat to the stern while in the water. I anticipate that the next episodes will be a live test of these ideas in a boat underway.
Thank you.
Amazingggggggg 😮
From wheel or tiller through the steen cleat and a dock fender tied at the end..troll it behind you while underway .
Great suggestion. It is really good for all of us to hear suggestions from each other! Thank you.
A knoted 1/2" rope ran to your steering wheel or tiller arm will make the boat stop in the water while under sail when held onto while in the water.
I like that idea. Tiller on windvane rudder (on a Hydrovane) would work for sure -- I have tried this recently under sail and will post a video on it soon. In that case, I used an ascending clamp to hold the tiller in place to free up the manoverboard to climb back aboard. I will try the wheel idea: Perhaps it could be rigged to at least get a 1/3 turn of the wheel or maybe even up to half a turn which may be enough to take the boat off course. Great suggestions. Thank you!
