  • About 1 hour before sunset and three hours before low tide, I was close hauled and tacking upwind to make Preedy Harbor in the Gulf Islands for the night. Despite the chart showing I had cleared the bar, I ran aground. This is Part 1 of a four-part series: My first response to the situation before the sun went down.

A lesson for us all, unfortunate but not dangerous given the weather conditions.

Yeah, I got some good and "easy" lessons here. I got off easy. Will post part 2, 3 and 4 to share the rest of the learnings.

Every sailor has done it..and if they haven't they either haven't sailed far or are lying. Thank goodness you were safe, it was soft & hopefully your boat didn't suffer damage.

Yeah, I got off easy. No visible damage to me or the boat. I will post part 2, 3 and 4 with the rest if the story and learnings.

You needed to talk with the Coasties to figure out if you can kedge?! That's the first thing I'd have done before the tide went out any more. If it didn't work, I'd at least have more scope upwind.
How old are your charts? Do you have a depth sounder? If so, did you look at it from time to time?
I love my Cape Dory's full keel...

I called the local tow boat service first and they were two hours away minimum -- then I called the Coasties to see if anyone else was nearby -- that's when I asked them for their opinion on kedging. Having never run aground before, kedging off was merely a theory I had read about! lol. So I asked their view. They figured waiting for the tide was the most elegant approach for my safety as well as the boat. In the moment, I agreed. (and with the knowledge that they do this regularly and I was a novice in this area!) Coasties asked about my charts. The chart plotter charts are circa 2016 so that is one of the action items for sure. The Coast Guard said that on their charts, my location showed me in the shallows. (which surprised me!) I was watching the depth sounder the whole time... had down to 11 feet then it started climbing to 12, 13, which appeared to match the chart... then I was aground in almost an instant. I was doing about 5.5 knots over the ground when I hit. Thanks for the note. I'm digesting and understanding the learnings still!

My Moody 346 has twin keels.

Quick comment..My father really wanted a twin keel boat..Would be great to beach & work on the hulls. Check Alluring Artic if you haven't already.

Cool. That would have allowed me to almost have a knap while waiting for the tide!

@@respecttherisk2022 alow me to mention several other benefits of two keels. At anchor the boat will not roll because the wide stance between the keels distributes the stabbing ballist countering the wave. This effect also holds true underway. Now picture this, a four foot draft becomes five when the boat is healed while sailing and when you hit the bar bringing to a stop you are back to four.
I have tried to beach her so the tides can go out and even with a running start the boat will just drift off. I need to keep it in forward gear pinning to the beach and anchor in place.
This is the best all around design for me when sailing in small craft warnings out in the Gulf stream. Out of Hillsboro inlet, the stream is about 5 to 7 miles due east where the elephants walk. This term means large 15' waves that you can see from shore. I have done this many times and don't understand why I am the only one out having fun. A side bonus is very large fish feed in these conditions.

@@markbailey6051 That is extremely interesting regarding the draft heeling versus flat. I have never heard about that before. Thank you for sharing that. 15 footers is the real thing. Wow.

@@respecttherisk2022 when the Gulf stream moving North @ 4 knots and the wind coming from the North after a cold front passes the waves are huge,at least 15' . The nice thing is that there is a counter current right next to the Gulf stream going South. You can jump on the elephant's backs until you lose your nerve, in two minutes you can be back in the calmer South current. It's a blast and a half.
