What is YOUR favorite fantasy book of all time?
For now The Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. 😀
Have you read the circle series by Ted dekker?
The Way of Kings
I just finished Memorice of Ice and the book scalated to the top of my list for now
I've read a lot of fantasy although I've fallen behind terribly. It's almost impossible for me to pick out a single favorite fantasy novel. It might be Jhereg by Steven Brust. (No one talks about Brust which makes me sad.) It might be A Raymond Feist novel or George R.R. Martin (I agree with many of these Booktubers that Storm of Swords is top tier work.) Perhaps it would be Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien. I could even put in a good word for Wizard's First Rule by Goodkind.
I'm going to cheat however. Technically this is a 5 book series but the edition I read had all 5 under one cover, does that count? The Chronicles of Amber by Zelazny (another author modern readers have forgotten, sadly.) A bonkers fantasy world, universe actually. Wonderful characters who can travel across that universe. Politics, intrigue, a touch of religion, mystery and more. I even own a copy of the diceless RPG and have played in online text campaigns based on Amber. A rather unique experience.
Thanks a ton for asking me to be a part of this, Matt! Always happy to be included among such fantastic content creators.
Thank so much for helping out Mike!
I was rooting for you to pick a first law book! but yea, Storm of Swords is probably better still.

Loved seeing everyone's favorites! Thanks for having me on the channel Matt!
Thanks for helping out - and for putting us all to shame with your awesome editing skills!
Thanks for the invitation to participate, Matt! Also, you have excellent literary taste! 😁
Thank you so much Philip, and the same to you! :)
"Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning? Or behold the flowing years from the sea returning?" - JRR Tolkien.
Thanks again for having us in this collab, Matt!! 😄 this video is great incentive for me to finally start Malazan now that I’ve finished with Wheel of Time 👀
Thank YOU for helping out! And yes, it's past time for Malazan!
Such a great video! Love seeing all the books people recommend (and how many specific books get said over and over again!) Thanks for having me!
Thank you for helping out Bookborn!
I read Warbreaker because of your recommendation and it’s amazing, definitely one of my favorites! Loved seeing you hype it up on this video ❤️ your channel and videos are incredible. Anyone who loves fantasy should subscribe to you!
A crossover I never knew I needed!
Thanks for asking me to be a part of this Matt! I love how many of these types of collabs that people are getting into, it's such a great way to showcase a bunch of kickass booktubers. Also LOL so much ASOS. ASOS superiority!
Thanks so much for helping out Alex!
Robin Hobb’s ‘Fool’s Assassin’ killed me… KILLED ME! I have never in my life, before or since, experience such a reading high as the last 100 pages of Fool’s Assassin…
In what sense? Suspense? Beauty of the prose? Or?
@@janduda253 Oh, I really love Hobb's magnificent prose in all the books, but specifically in Fool's Assassin I loved how the book had a slow burn start that slowly reveals this mystery suspense plot that's been building and building since the first chapter. :) x
This was so awesome, Matt! I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s answers to their favorite fantasy book! I’ll be doing both the ASOIAF reread next year as well as my first read through of Malazan and so many people in this video got me even more excited for those than I already was! Great work putting this together man and thanks for asking me to be a part of this…it was a lot of fun!
Thanks for joining, and I hope you love Malazan!
Malazan is calling you!
I can't just pick one fantasy book, but it seems like your all picking one book that's in the epic fantasy genre I would probably pick the Name of the Wind also...but I also have a real love for Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell too. I now have a signed 1st Print 1st edition HC of The Name of the Wind that has an extremely rare drawing in red ink of the "green man" just after the title page that Donato, the illustrator draw and signed. I have never read that copy nor would I cuz I'm not a moron but I read a second hand paper back copy my first time and knew absolutely nothing about what the book was about.
Thank you so much for inviting me to participate in this wonderful collab, Matt! I loved hearing everyone’s choice, and I’m thrilled that we have the same favorite book that got so much praise here! 🎉🏆🔥 This video is a great incentive to read all the books mentioned that I haven’t read. Amazing job putting this together!
Thank you so much for participating!
Great video and lots of awesome faces here! Storm of swords is also my favorite fantasy novel hahaha glad to see it well represented!!
It's definitely getting a lot of love in the booktube community!
That's up there for me too, good choice!
Loved the video! Thank you so much for having me on the channel 😊
Thank you for helping out!
@Library of a Viking, I found this video interesting after watching your recent video on your feelings on Malazan! Did all of these people talking about book 10 make you want to pick it back up?
Thank you for inviting me and putting this all together!
Thank YOU for helping out!
Great collaboration. You picked a great group of reviewers. Hopefully you all get many new subs.
Great video. I'm glad you invited so many, it gives many of us exposure to several book tubers who I'm sure we have not seen.
Ironic, I was asked by a book group a month ago, and it was A Storm of Swords, glad I have a good deal of company on this.
Yeah it's just so dang good, and is really holding up the test of time against more modern books!
This has been one of the best "best of" types of book videoes I have seen. Loved it!
Thanks so much!
Crazy how you got together a group of my favorite book tubers as well. Cheers to you for this feat! Keep up the great stuff. - SpireMetro Books
Thanks for the kind words!
You are amazing for putting this together.
I love watching collabs like these. Well done!
By the way, I just realized you and I have been friends on Goodreads 😀
Hello friend! :)
Now that I've finally stopped travelling I can finally watch this! Thank you so much for inviting me to this wonderful collab! You rock!
Thank you for participating, I loved getting a "2 for 1" with you and Grace!
Cool concept video. Major applause to Sarah Reads for her Watership Down love. Not actually one of my favorites but I love her reasoning and heartfelt examination of why it is her favorite. Once again, nice video, lots of really good booktubers.
Yes, fully agreed I loved her choice.
Apparently I need to move Malazan up my TBR list
Like, yesterday!
Thanks and great video! Seriously, your channel is so good, keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, and I really appreciate you helping me out by sending me a video!
I loved seeing everyone’s picks! Thanks for having me on, and this was an awesome idea for a video!
Thanks for sending in a clip Ben!
This is a great video Matt! Enjoyed watching everyone's picks. Definitely feel the heat to start Malazan now.
Thank you - and I hope you enjoy your Malazan experience whenever you get around to it!
Another great one Matt! I am about 80 pages from finishing Gardens of the Moon for the first time. You can imagine my hype when 3 of the books were featured.
You are in for an AMAZING ride my friend - enjoy!
Wonderful video, but not one person mentioned a book from my personal top 3 fantasy series:
3) The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay
2) The Strange the Dreamer duology by Laini Taylor
1) The FIrst Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie
All great picks, especially First Law for me.
First Law is an odd one personally because I think I have the series rated higher than any of the individual books. Don't get me wrong, I love them all individually but the series is greater than the sum of its parts in my opinion.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews That makes sense. I tend to consider series as individual books (like Tolkien preferred to do with Lord of the Rings), so I don't really focus on individual books from series.
This is an awesome video! Love the concept of getting all these BookTubers on to share their faves :)
Thank you! It was fun to put together.
Dang, lots of Storm of Swords!!! I can't wait to read ASOIAF starting January!!! Thanks so much for asking me to participate! Great video, Matt!
You are in for an absolutely WILD ride with that one!
Mine was also Storm of Swords but I couldn't film in time 🤣🤣 I'm glad it was represented well enough though lmao
@@readbykyle3082 man I cannot wait to read it.
This was great video Matt. Thank you for asking me to partake. Seems like I really need to finish Malazan
No problem, thanks for your participation! And yes....yes you do need to finish Malazan!
Fantastic idea, watch this video pop off Matt.
Awesome channels, awesome recommendations!
Thanks so much Vic!
Fantastic collab🎉
Thank you!! 😁
Absolutely love this video, has every single one of my fav book tubers big and small channel wise :)
Thank you!
Love this video! Glad I'm not the only one who's a super fan of A storm of Swords. And this video has me wanting to get back into the Malazan series for sure.
Thank you - and yes, definitely get back into Malazan! :)
Wow what an amazing video.
Thank you for discovering me so many channels.
You are most welcome!
So, it seems I have a lot of new books to look out for. And some channels too, thank you for that! And in keeping with the theme, my fave book for sure is The Blacktongue Thief, it's just so uniquely written and I bookmarked so much passages. I know I'll re-read this one, it stuck with me.
Also I'm reading Malazan, because of you! It's the third time I'm trying and I kept going back to it, because a lot of people I followed on Goodreads talked about it. I saw your reviews and said fuck it. Now I'm here, finishing the first book!
I can't wait to read Blacktongue later this year, I keep hearing amazing things!
Great job continuing on with Malazan! Are you using the powerpoint to help keep your head straight on all the confusing stuff?
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews I hope you have a good time!
Yes, I did. Mostly to know where we were on the map, because I'm reading ebooks and the quality was shit.
I started Deadhouse yesterday and if I feel the need, I'll certainly go back to it. Thinking about giving the podcast a go also.
Thanks for the reading list 👍
You are most welcome!
Great video!
Sarah's Banana Fish shirt ❤ and what a great favorite book.
One of my favorite new channels keep it up!
Thank you Ben!
This video was great, thank you for making it!
You are most welcome, thanks for the kind comment!
How do you not have more subs? This video and all your others that I’ve seen are fantastic
Thanks! I'm still a new channel, haven't even been around for a year yet.
Absolutely fantastic video!
Thank you!
Man, I need to get back into Malazan. I finished the first two books and they blew me away, and started Memories of Ice but I got too burnt out at that point to finish. It's been months since I read a word of it but I haven't been able to get it out of my head, and I think this video just made me realise that Deadhouse Gates is my favourite fantasy book.
Yeah definitely pick it back up! But you may need to do a re-read or at least catch up on the bullet points so you aren't lost. It's a confusing series for sure.
Really cool video. I read the first book of Malazan but was underwhelmed. However, with so many competent persons praising the series I might need to give it another shot.
The first is the worst of the bunch. The second is where it starts to seriously elevate. The third is a literary masterpiece.
Storm of Swords for me but man, I clearly need to read Malazan Book of the Fallen. What an awesome video!
Thank you Kevin!
Man I have not started Malazan but by all these accounts book 10 seems amazing. I gotta finish my Abercrombie run first haha. Awesome video. Had to come back and edit this comment after seeing the rest of it. It was SO nice seeing Dragonlance get some love!!! Dragonlance gets overlooked a lot nowadays!
Abercrombie is absolutely amazing so you are in for an amazing ride!
And while book 10 of Malazan is extremely special, the entire ride is wonderful.
i just started the robin hobbs elderlings. but malazan has to be next for me too i think
I can't say that the Dragonlance Legends is my favourite fantasy book, but it holds a special place in my heart.
Because back when I was in school, it was my breakthrough in learning English. Up to that point that language was just something I had classes at school but could not use it for anything. I tried reading "The Lord of the Rings", but the language used there was too hard.
Now, I did read the german edition of the Dragonlance Chronicles and loved them, but Legends had not yet been translated.
So managed to get the original english edition in a fantasy store in Nuremberg and actually managed to read it!
Not everything, of course, but the language was simple enough and I was familiar enough with the setting and the characters that I managed to fully read it without having a dictionary by my side.
I've never read it before, but I hear it's really good!
Love this!
Thank you!
Definitely will picc up Malazan because of you, hope its good, its on a lot of peoples top 10. Actually kind of excited to read it now.
YAY! Another one converted!
Excellent collab and video Matt! I really enjoyed. Looks like you’ll have to read Sword of Kaigen at some as Petrik knocked the last recommendation out of the park 😃
Yeah that book is scheduled to be read very early 2023. I can't wait!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Awesome, I’m planning on early 2023 as well!
great video Matt! I just hoped Daniel Greene & Merphy Napier would be here also
Yeah I just am no super into their videos personally.
Cool video. I'm currently reading through The Faithful and the Fallen series and they are great and one of them could very well be at the top of my list. But, for now, I would have to say that my favorite fantasy book is The Way of Kings. The world was so new and fresh, the magical system is so unique and evolving, and the stakes are so high, not only for the continuance of their world, but each individual's stakes are truly epic.
Yeah Way of Kings is right up there for me as top, top, top tier!
So Storm of Swords is the most popular favorite book with 4 Booktubers selecting it The Crippled God comes in second with 3 book tubers going with that book. Interestingly, Bonehunters and Deadhouse Gates, also from The Malazan Book of The Fallen, were also selections here. For me, I could go with Storm of Swords, Deadhouse Gates, or The Warrior-Prophet.
Crippled God kinda had 4 too because Andy Smith said it was his favorite but wasn't picking it to talk about because it's hard to talk about without spoiling things.
I'm planning on reading Prince of Nothing in 2023, I'm looking forward to it!
Wow, a lot of love for Malazan, I really need to give it a try.
My favourite is The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.
Yeah definitely give Malazan a shot!
I tried Malazan a way back but got bogged down- I am going to try it again from the beginning, in response to these recommendations

@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Thanks for the link- will have a good look
Great content!
Thanks so much Mark!
Wow, a lot of Crippled Gods. Guess I'm lucky. Currently reading Dust of Dreams, so I have TCG to look forward to next.
Dust of Dreams was my least favorite in the series, and that's a pretty common opinion. You are in for an amazing increase in book quality coming soon!
Than you so much for having me on, Matt!
Thank YOU for helping me out!
Love this idea for a video! I have three answers. For pure epic world building, The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien. For nostalgic love of the genre and a story I could read again and again, The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien, and for reigniting my love of both reading and writing fantasy and being the best opening to a series EVER, The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Yeah The Way of Kings definitely had that "reigniting" thing for me as well. It really blew me away and got me started on a bunch other series when I got caught up on it.
Way of Kings! 100% as long as I don’t over think it, because there are just sooooo many great books out there!
Yeah that's a great choice! It's definitely a top tier book for me.
My favorite too, my first real introduction to epic fantasy. But reading more and more and finding more favorites is the plan for the rest of my life
@@harrycorbiniv same here, it was my introduction as well, and it really rekindled my love of reading and I’ve been finding a ton of great books, it’s hard to pick a favorite sometimes. Just finished Kings if the Wyld, and OMG I can’t say enough good things about it lol
Going to run to the library to get Ship of Magic after watching this video! My book order is coming in Wednesday but now I can’t wait. Lol I agree with many of the recommendations on this video to include Steven Erikson, Terry Pratchett, John Gwynne, and Brandon Sanderson. Robin Hobb is a new favorite for me after completing the first trilogy in the Realm of the Elderlings. Thanks for the recommendations.
Oh wow you are going to absolutely LOVE Ship of Magic. Happy reading!
I recently ordered a box set of the Faithful and the Fallen after reading an excerpt of Malice. 😃got a feeling it was a gift card well used!
You are in for an incredible read! The first book starts slow but every book gets crazier and crazier. Enjoy!
I might go with either Abercrombie's "The Heroes" or "Last Argument of Kings" but then the bloke is widely loved by just about everyone out there so I'll go with something less mainstream. Michael R. Fletcher's "Beyond Redemption".
Loved both Heroes and Last Argument of Kings - never heard of Beyond Redemption but I'll check it out, thanks!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews That book deserves your attention.
I have flashbacks of the crippled god all the time. I feel like i was there for some of the battles in this series. Great video idea!
Excellent video
Thanks so much Dave!
Glad to see all the love for ASoS! Would've been my pick as well.
It's so good. It's not the top for me but definitely top 10. Maybe even top 5.
The verdict: The Crippled God and Storm of Swords both with 4 mentions each (and Malazan BotF getting two more mentions). I guess I was hoping for a few more LOTR mentions but shouldn't be surprised, especially by the sub-40's crowd, at the preference for more modern stuff.
Yeah I think thats a good observation about LotR.
Great Video. So many Malazan recommendations - I started reading the series a couple of years ago and DNF'ed in the middle of "Memories of Ice" - And though I thought the world was really awesome, I was so confused about what's going on and who is who... - always wanted to give it another try...- perhaps now is the right time (and perhaps I'll take some notes this time) 😀
As for my favourite fantays book if I could choose only one it would be "Warbreaker" - by Brandon Sanderson... I mean - it has a sentient sword... - one of my favorite fantasy tropes since reading the Elric books by Michael Moorcock when I was a kid
For Malazan, I HIGHLY suggest using the powerpoints available for the first few books to keep track of what is going on. They are SUPER helpful.

@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Very helpful indeed - thank you so much for linking them. 😀
Assassin's Quest, Robin Hobb. This was the last book of the first Farseer trilogy. It's my favorite in the entire Farseer cycle of 3 trilogies. Fitz is finally cut loose from Keep and he must travel across the map incognito to avoid essentially being burned as a witch and traitor. The people he meets and travels with are interesting and there is a sense of going on a quest that previous books were leading up to. Also the traveling along the Skill road with the gender fluid Fool and his visions of a previous girlhood that may or may not be his own, the cryptic old woman Kettle and her stone strategy games, the loyal Night eyes, etc reveals so much culture and history as well as answers to questions and secrets hinted at throughout the previous two volumes.
100% on guards guards !!! So good!
Forgot to add, fantastic video! 👏
Thank you!
Really enjoyed this collab everyone, thanks for the recommendations! Second pretty much everything that I had read myself already, but excited to try John Gwynne who I hadn't come across before. Keep up the great work!
I hope you love it - he's an amazing writer!
Thanks for having me! I loved seeing everryones choices!
Your answer is the best and same as mine. The GOAT. 🙏🏽
Thanks so much for participating!
Wow! Very interesting. So many of the very same books. As an older reader (whose read many of these books) I find it interesting because none of them are on my best books list.
Well there is plenty of support for my decision to finally start Malazan 🤪
From the perspective of straight up swords and magic my favorite would be BETWEEN TWO FIRES. Which is a true stand alone by Christopher Buehlman.
Thank you for doing this! The recurrence of books clearly indicates that they should be read, so I got a few strong recommendations out of this! If you ever consider doing something like this again, consider restricting the genre further: best swords and sorcery book, best fantasy action, best fantasy romance, best urban fantasy, etc. thanks again
Yeah great idea!
Such an awesome video thanks for including me!
Thank you for helping out!
Really great video! You simply do not get the attention you deserve!! Love the content!
Thanks! But honestly I think I'm getting way more than I deserve - my channel is less than 6 months old!
Glad to see Harry Potter on this list, despite all the amazing fantasy that has come out since I would say a lot of us fantasy lovers would be lying if we didn't say that HP was the most definitive book of our childhood (depending on your age, I'm 32) and the re-readability even as an adult is truly amazing.
Great video. I dip my tow into fantasy and these types of videos are a huge resource. I also recently finished editing a big video with many of these great creators as well and know how much work goes into putting this together, so I really appreciate your great effort. Subscribing.
Thank you so much, and I just hit you back with a sub!
I love how Jay's clip is so well edited.
Yeah it really puts us all to shame!
Glad to see the Malazan series getting the love it deserves.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
"The Sword of Kaigen" by M. L. Wang deserves so much love and I am glad Petrik brought it up. My favorite Fantasy is also my favorite book of all times and the reason I got into SFF. It is "Piranesi" by Susanna Clarke.
Yeah I'm reading it soon and cannot wait!
I would have to go with 2 books in the fantasy genre and from opposite sides of it. Terry Pratchett Interesting Times is the pinnacle for the Rincewind stories. It is funny, insightful and covers many topics as well as reintroducing the Tourist from the original disc world books. It’s a joy to read as you follow Rincewind on his misadventures and ask some important questions along the way.
The other is Perils Gate by Janny Wurts. It’s the final book of the alliance of light trilogy which is just one of the arcs in the wars of light and shadow. This book starts at the end of the previous one and then it’s a mad, hectic rush to the end. I had to read it twice because the first reading was done at speed chapter after chapter. The sheer energy in the book just didn’t allow me to stop and I didn’t want to either.
Yeah, Interesting Times was absolutely wonderful and while not my #1 Discworld book, I'm pretty sure it's #2.
Haven't read any Janny Wurts, but I've heard really good things.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews I’d put her on the same level of Tolkien, Erickson and Rothfuss. It’s criminal how she is more highly rated. I can allow you to have interesting times as your no. 2 but I am interested in what your no. 1 is.
@@stevenredpath9332 The Last Continent is my #1, but only by a HAIR. I loved pretty much everything about it, especially the shenanigans the wizards go through while stuck on the island. They literally had me laughing out loud.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews that’s fair enough. Cohen, Rincewind and the Luggage with the surprise of twoflower is it for me. And beneath the comedy the actual topics terry was examining has me going back to it. That insight is why I still miss him. And the humour. GNU Terry.
Wow so many picking malazan books. I really have to read it !
Definitely!
What a fun collaboration! So many hearts for the Crippled God.
Thank you!
I'm curious if you've read the Codex Alera series and, if so, what are your thoughts? One of my favorites, though it has some significant flaws. Who doesn't like a wolf-like species that stands upright at over 8 feet tall?
Never read it but now I'm intrigued!
Dang, Crippled God. Hmm. Maybe I need to try...
Dude...it's so good!
"The Hero's" by Joe Abercrombie
I really need to read Malazan.
Yes...yes you do!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews I’m currently drowning in my tbr…
Favourite individual has to be Guy Gavriel Kay’s Under Heaven, such a beautiful story, told in such a captivating way
You approach brings joy to me
I haven't read that one - I'll have to give it a try.
Omggggg Warbreaker me tooooo
Thanks so much for including me Matt! I feel like the guy that cheated on the test. 😂
Yeah I felt the same way because I recorded mine last and a few other people picked it.
So....I just moved my video to the front and made everyone else look like cheaters!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews the power of a good edit lol
I would love to know what stand alone book, not part of a series, is everyones favourite books.
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE BABY!!!
Awesome list. I was getting concerned there for a while, and then Alex came on with LOTR. 😅
-T
LOL - yeah it got a couple mentions later in the video.
Andy smith is sitting in front of a door with the number 619... The Rey Mysterio number
Have you ever seen Rey Mysterio and Andy Smith at the same time?
Might be the same person...
Small Gods. Peak Terry Pratchett humor, peak Terry Pratchett social commentary, peak Terry Pratchett cleverness. It's the pinnacle of the best attributes of one of the greatest authors of all time. (Although I do have to say that Moist von Lipwig is my favorite Pratchett character, so I was close to agreeing with TreeBeard on that one)
Yeah Small Gods is probably my #1 Pratchett book.
