Fanny rehearsal, CANDLELIGHTER MAN

- Yesterday I was in the IMA barn in studio B, checking ProTools out to see if it was behaving. It was! and in the process I found this Fanny rehearsal track, me Jean Alice & Nicky working at Fanny Hill, super-early days. I mean, the bridge wasn't even written! The first comp was somewhat cobbled together for a backing track for my audiobook - still in progress - of "Land of a 1,000 Bridges" and the second is as is. You know, if I were to give us a grade I'd say we were in the Third Grade (I almost put us in first!), busy trying stuff out. You can hear Jean working through bass parts, me working through guitar ideas - ok, I'm practically in kindergarten! - Alice has a lotta stuff going on (she's so *good*!) and Nicky's busy comp'ing away. By that I mean, playing the simplest chords/groove over and over again; it could be boring, but I don't know that she'd ever had that job before (I never asked), and we were all just trying to improve individually, and as a band, as fast as we could.
I almost censored myself from putting this together but thought, I always talk about how much we played - fooling around and rehearsing, I don't mean performing and recording - some folks might find this really interesting. And they like us, they'll forgive our boo-boos!
So, please enjoy. Most of the photos are from the Linda Wolf stash, some you've seen before but I discovered some new outtakes ... and maybe six photos were taken by Bob Riegler, our pal the Vietnam vet who returned to LA and managed to discover and hang out with us. Lucky guy! The main thing was: stay out of our way, and don't bother to talk too much. Too busy, you know? It all worked out, and he left me the negatives.
What a trip to hear this again. Memories ...
xx

Greetings June, Im from Bristol ,Connecticut. I have been a fan and admirer of Fanny since 1971 , when i saw you and the band perform on The Sonny and Cher Show. The performance of Charity Ball really put the hook in me. The great melody and wonderful vocals and harmonies impressed a 12 year old boy. As the years have passed I have come to appreciate the bands great musical talent and abilities.
I want to thank you,June, Alice, and Nicky for the many hours of listening pleasure you brought to me.
By the way, I always thought your rendition of SPECIAL CARE was outstanding, one of my favorate tracks. May the future br4ing you continued success.
Thank you for the memories June. Really interesting and very cool hearing a band at work.
You are so welcome. xx
Fanny for the Hall of Fame✊
I never realized how much Alice’s rock steady drumming anchors this song! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
She’s a marvelous drummer
Thank You June
As a youngster who is looking towards creating, these rehearsal-style takes are most important. A lot of humans (including myself) have a habit of calling creatives "genius," simply because we only hear the final product. I would consider YOU and the ladies "genius," but you often demonstrate and emphasize the work you specifically had to put in. That doesn't get covered as much and it helps me understand music is a PROCESS and CONSISTENCE is key. Chipping away at a song idea using basic chords makes music. Add complexity and snazzyness later! Once again, thank you for all you have done June. I hope yourself, Jean, Nicky, and Alice are doing great.
Many thanks for this upload, Lady June - I've always admired how hard you guys worked at your craft. The pics are an added bonus!
June, this is just superb....I honestly prefer to the actual released track....it has a wonderful loose jamming approach where your individual musicianship shines (warts and all) and is a delight, thank you for sharing
Good jam. ❤
Love it!
There's some most excellent bass and guitar work from the Millingtons here, and as usual Alice brings the beat; dead on kinda funky. Add some nice piano -- love it
Good jam
Thanks for saving and sharing all this, very nice relaxing listening to this jam&video. The music is easy to love, easy r&b style.-All the best!
Very interesting to hear this. Keep them coming June! All the best!!!!
Thanks for sharing June. Enjoyed watching this.🎸👍❤️🌸
“Candlelighter Man” has been on of my FAVORITE Fanny tunes ever since I heard it on their 1st album ‘way back in 1970!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

It’s cool listening to you guys playing with the groove. It’s very personal; I appreciate you sharing
Wow, what an absolute treasure! Thank you so much for sharing these.
The dynamics!!!!! Whew!!!!!! Blowin my mind!
:)) so glad! Vintage ...
Very soulful, love hearing the backstory too. The Beat Club vids got me hooked, ya'll definitely have a groupie here
Oh my! If I had a time machine I would go back and sneak into that basement window at Fanny Hill just to watch you 4 jam & rehearse!
So cool! What a great groove. There's a lot going on there, way beyond third grade. Thanks for posting!
So welcome!! And thanks for the comment ~ "way beyond third grade," I love that. xx
@@JuneEsWorld From where you're at here, and where you're heading, I'd say starting the PHD course! I just stumbled on your CZcams channel - great stuff. Thanks again for posting all this, and for all the great music.
Sooo cool!
Hey June, glad you went ahead and uploaded it. Half the fun of music is learning it, I always thought. Yes, jamming on the same chords might seem boring with some, but falling into that groove sure doesn't seem boring when you're feeling it, especially early on. Thank You!
Love it! It's like seeing the sketches of a masterpiece
The amazing talent of June. Goes right thru you and you can feel the power and soul of the music.
Salamat my cousin
Great band . Recognized , then overlooked as hack bands got the glory . Unfair .
Not blowin smoke but this was 70(ish)? LA? The Doors could barely touch your hem. 😁
agreed....doors the most overrated band, fanny the most underappreciated band

Great video June and to see some of the old photos.
Just wonderful.
Good sounds coming from Fanny, again. Love'um.
Every once in a while I dig out old cassette tapes of my band rehearsals from my high-school days and am surprised by how musical we sometimes actually were! (But, also how horrid most of it was back when we were just learning HOW to play!)
Well, this is from a decade or two later! But, it sorta is what I am talking about! czcams.com/video/4ZyHsJZAwp0/video.html
This is beautiful!
So bloody good.. thanks for sharing
Wow! Loving it all so much!!!
Hi June, it's Rémi, wow, that's great, really!!! The beginning looks like a jam session, is Nicky singing? xx
Groovy!
Thanks June big hugs 🤙
Thank you June, was great to see the footage and music.
You are so welcome. xx
outstanding bass playing.....but then, the whole band is outstanding. But skilled bass players are somewhat harder to find, that's why i mention it ;-)
Love session tapes. Working it out. Want. More. Call me piggie.. want more. 🤭
And you.will.get.it:)) xx
@@JuneEsWorld I can't wait! But alas I will. 😘
