Top 6 Diamond Painting Tools for Beginners - From Budget to Boutique! What to Upgrade?

Welcome to my suggested top six upgrades of diamond painting accessories and tools for beginners, with price points from budget to boutique/bougie! These are the tools I think would make the biggest difference for you to upgrade from the ones that come in your basic toolkit. While they aren't must-haves, they’re things I would have liked to prioritize as a beginning diamond painter that would have made diamond painting a little easier (and more comfortable and enjoyable!) for me!

A good table and a good chair!! I use a tilting table on a height adjustable table. And a good chair. Always support your back and your butt!
Make sure your comfortable. Don't let your shoulders or back suffer. Take time to get up and walk too
Great video for beginners. The only thing is, I would say storage is the 1st thing I would recommend. I remember my first diamond painting. The first thing I thought was what am I supposed to do when I open these packs. There was only like 8 baggies.
Thanks so much for this video, Katie. While I'm not a beginner anymore I'm not as seasoned as you yet and I really appreciated all the information. I have been diamond painting maybe a year and a half.
I have upgraded my tray to a Cat Proof tray, I have bought some different pens from Amazon (one with a light) and I am waiting on a custom turned pen. I saw one of your older videos where you recommended Quake Hold Museum putty so I have been using that for a while now in my multiplacer. I use glue dots in my single placer. I haven't tried a boutique for washi tape yet. I couldn't live without my A3 light pad. My shoulders and neck started hurting so now I have a tabletop easel. My storage is one of those suitcase styles you mentioned and I'm happy with it. Another upgrade that I might suggest is the actual diamond paintings. When I first started out, I bought the cheap ones online. I didn't know any better. Compare those to kits like from DAC, they do not compare! The symbols are better from DAC, and so are the canvases. I get less trash drills also from higher end companies. On my journey, I also learned from you about artist licensing and making my sponsoring of shops that support artists a priority.
I agree with you about the pens and the storage. I would also add to the list a good chair, something with back support that is comfortable to sit in for hours at a time. I use an ergonomic office chair that I found at a thrift store for $7 USD. Another tool that made a huge difference for me was a tabletop easel. I had been at the point of giving up diamond painting because my back hurt so much from constantly leaning forward to work on a flat surface. The ability to work at an adjustable angle made all the difference. Tabletop easels are also conveniently collapsible and portable, and much cheaper than the bougie option of a drafting table.
My drafting table only cost me $100 and I love it so much :)
I have been diamond painting for about a year now and I am considering getting a better chair like you said and a designated desk. I'm currently working at the kitchen table because that has the best lighting and the "best" chair but I can feel that it's still not great for my legs or my back
I upgraded my pen purchased one from amazon and one from dreamer design. My trays I upgraded and I did get a couple of light pads. I use washi tape.

I have an A2 light pad that was about 50 USD. I also have a lighted magnifying glass that I use. I have some disabilities that makes it hard for me to see the symbols. Also the light pad really helps me with multi placing square drills. But when I did my first kit, I had none of these. I just added things as I have worked on more and found areas that I needed some extra assistance in.
I agree with all of these Katie. These upgrades will definitely make diamond painting more comfortable and more enjoyable for sure. I have tried several of these things and I still use them today. Great video!
I don't remember who said that but you can also use plant seed carriers/holders for dp drills

After watching your video I placed my first orders with simplygilded and Randas!! I’m excited to try them I got the scents raspberry cookies and chai tea
I love my firefly trays. I finally gave a special pen a real go, and I love my dac pen I got at Hobby Lobby. I use glue dots in my single placer and the regular pink wax in my multiplacer. I use the screw on top round plastic bottles for kitting up into from amazon. I don't use washi or a light pad, I do use a good desk lap with a clamp for my draft table.
I'm just starting to practice more multi placing but I'm still not used to it but I think I agree with you that I like the pink wax just fine in my multi placer rather than what she said about wax in the single placer and putty in the multi one. In my single placer it seems like I'm replacing the wax and loosing the stickyness faster with pink wax than in my multi placer so I just placed my first Etsy order for "fancy" putty to try in my single placer

Great video Katie. Very informative. I’m not sure why you saved the light pad until last though! It was one of my first upgrades! I have purchased 3, although I also use overhead lighting, which is even better for me. Have to have it. I use all 3 types of storage containers you mentioned. Haven’t really worked with all the different putties available. I tend to stick with the pink wax…that’s just me! I don’t use the pens that come with the kits. I have several pens I purchased from DAC and use as well as a couple of custom pens that I like to use. Of course, I think the bigger trays are a must. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Thank you!
Pen and tray upgrades are a must. I used Amazon upgraded products for a year before branching into the bougie space. I used to use a light pad but find I prefer an overhead light with a magnifying glass. Oh, and storage containers. I found Elizabeth Ward pretty early on. I don’t use anything else. Great tips here!
I use white surgical tape on the top and bottom of the canvas and clear scotch tape on the sides so i have the option to still see the Legend, even if I rarely look at it.
I just ordered my first Etsy tray because like you mentioned in the video the shallow sides of the kit trays are starting to bother me a bit. I'm excited for my first fancy upgrade🎉 My next upgrade will probably be better lighting

On the subject of lighting, I do both. In my craft room where the overhead light is good, I don’t need a light pad. In my living room where I do smaller kits, I use a light pad because the lighting is terrible! I tried clip on task lamps but the light pad actually worked better.
I don't use a light pad. But I do use a lighted magnifier. It's a big help for me. Thank you for your suggestions, as I'm new to diamond painting. Hadn't even thought of some of these options. It's relaxing and a bit addictive. ❤
I use hand turned pens, 3d printed trays, gorilla mounting putty in my multiplacer, glue dots in my single placer, a drafting table, washi tape for the borders, Elizabeth ward containers, and a light I clip behind my glass drafting table that acts as a light board. I LOOOVE all of these accessories and can’t imagine diamond painting without them anymore it really makes so much of a difference. My fave pens come from poshy pens and my fave trays are from bijou bliss and yellowdogdesigns
A rechargeable light pad was definitely a game changer for me. The charge lasts for quite awhile which is convenient. I would like a larger one as i think mine is an A3. The other game changer was a tilting lap desk, not cheap but its great for neck pain.
The bougiest I can think of is a sit-to-stand desk for making sure you're not sitting in the same position for 4+ hours :3
Thank you Katie - I think this would be a must watch for beginners who are looking to improve their experience from the basics that come with kits. As you point out it is very dependent on the individual and how they like to work. For me, I think storage is the first thing to upgrade as I don't like working from the baggies. But some of this may also be dependent on the size of canvas/number of colours/quality of the kit that you're working on. I use a light pad although it's not so needed with good quality kits, but for some budget kits, it can really make a difference in distinguishing some symbols on the canvas. I agree that larger trays with higher sides can be really useful, especially as you get into multi-placing. I was okay with the basic pens, but do prefer the somewhat thicker pens. Also the putty lasts a lot longer in your pen than the wax does. Rachel Rae did a video testing different types of wax and putty. Also I don't know why you didn't refer people to your video on using washi tape.
Im glad I'm not the only one e who doesn't use a light board. Bur to my funky brain and constant migraine and dizziness they drive me insane. How ever IV upgraded most of my other items my addition to putty and hand made pens is getting worse lol

If you get a light pad I would suggest using 2 binder clips to reinforce on each side of your power site port. Constantly plugging/unplugging tend to distort area and mess with the power. But now that I use one I can't live without it 😂
For my light pad I got a magnetic tip charging cable that way it will not pull out the electrical port.

I've only been painting since December when I got a kit as a gift. I've been addicted ever since and I've done sooo many kits since then. I did buy a fancy pen but I find it more uncomfortable. Maybe i'm just used to the tool kit pen.
I'm fine using the tool kit pens as well haha. I have a slightly larger pen as well and just ordered my first "Boujee" pen from Etsy that is coming in the mail just so I can try it out. But I would probably be okay with going back to a thin pen as well tbh
This was a great beginner videos. I have only been diamond painting for a short time snd still use baggies. I would like to know where I can get sheets if the labels. I looked at staples, Walmart, Michael’s and can not find them. I live the pens too, I just ordered one from Temu as I really out slot of pressure in my pens. Thanks for sharing.
Amazon has little suitcase type storage with round cylinder containers that screw off. The case has a handle, looks pretty and can hold up to 120 containers. Sizes vary. And each kit comes with a little mesh pouch that will include additional supplies including a collapsible funnel. They run about $30-$40 USD depending on how many containers it holds. I have a LOT of Elizabeth Ward containers that I use exclusively for my beading and jewelry supplies. That said, for Diamond painting I would NOT recommend them. The individual containers are difficult to open. I never use my nails, and will always open them with a bead scoop. Plus, they are very expensive. I find the cylindrical containers easier to label, easier to open and the case is more portable, less bulky and less heavy. Ward systems take up a lot of space. I have a tower to hold all the ones I need for my beading. I have two of the little suitcase type storage containers for the drills for current projects. They have pretty patterns, take up way less space and are easy to pull out. To store leftover drills, I use the little baggies that often come with the kits.
One other thing about the pens. I bought a budget pen with several changeable tips. It’s pretty. But I find that the tips are thicker than the freebie pens and will often push drills already placed out of the way a bit as I place a new drill. Especially true in confetti situations. What I like about the bougie pens you showed, was it looked like the tips were the same thickness as the freebies. I think that’s a big plus and you didn’t really mention that.
I have the light pad you showed and it makes a huge difference. But I also bought a metal mesh adjustable easel that folds up for storage so I’m not leaning over the table diamond painting. It’s more ergonomic and saves my back. The mesh allows the light pad to not overheat. Available as well on Amazon.

Nice video. I invisted in storage, and then pens. Washi makes it nice to match with the colours of your kit. I dont use a light pad but a cutting mat under my diamond painting. I found great putty from the Netherlands and a good tray in Germany

For me, I have to have a light pad. My vision is simply too poor. Even with an overhead light, and my glasses, I can have difficulty placing the drills correctly. I had a small light pad like the one you showed, half the size and it cost me nearly 30 AUD. It broke within a few months. I can get an A3 rechargeable for 75 AUD and will probably go with that because too many cords in my way (I only have a small space to work in) can often be problematic.
I think a number 7 would be an essay Vs drafting table.
I'm pretty fortunate in that my husband went to school for architecture and he is an art teacher. So I can use his professional drafting table if I want or if I decide to use an easel, he can pick out quality and ergonomics.
Very helpful! I personally went with a light pad first because some of my first kits were stock photos of flowers and the symbol quality was poor. I have now graduated to better pens and steel tips/ multiplacers…
I have not tried putty yet but understand the new DAC kits are coming with putty so I’m intrigued and ready to try… how does the washi that comes in kits stack up. Do you use what comes in kits or do you switch to your shop faves?
What do you with leftover diamonds once you finish a kit?
What do you do about static drills? It seems like an impossible task to remove.
Dryer sheet
I don't have dryer sheets. But here's a hack for ya. Get a small piece of paper towel. The piece should b small enuff to fit into the bag, maybe ~2" Drop a couple drops of water. Piece should barely b wet. Rub the bag on the inside of bag even if it has drills inside. But it's better if the bag is empty. Let dry naturally, shouldn't take more than a minute, that's why I emphasize: BARELY DAMP. Repeat this for every bag of drills & you should have no problems, worked for me. Do not wipe the inside of the bag w/a dry towel bcuz that may re-introduce static. There's a CZcams video on this technique. But if I post it, CZcams won't print the link. I've tried. Hope this helps 🙂
I love Simply Gilded washi, but for some reason it always peels off my canvases :( I agree with all of these though. Also chiming in with others that ergonomics help so, so much when diamond painting. I use an artboard to get my canvas at an angle, but I've seen others use large lightboards with angled frames, travel easles, desk easles and drafting desks. An angle helps so much for your back!
