  • This was the first port stop on our P&O Canaries Cruise N225, which was at Funchal on the Island of Madeira.
As ever, we didn't really have any plans beforehand other than wanting to go up on the Cable Car and walk back down to the town. As it happens, we actually found a really nice walk back down through the valley just to the East of the cable car, partly along one of the City 'Levadas' which is a type of channel used to help direct water down through the valley (apparently).
We definitely knew we had been walking over the next few days, so if you saw us hobbling around the cruise ship, yes, that was us! :)
It was also interesting to see the wicker toboggan sledges that were being "driven" down the streets, although we didn't fancy riding them ourselves, it did look like fun.
The seafront and town itself was really nice as well, and plenty of areas to walk on flatter surfaces if you don't fancy the same walk as us. Quite a few places to stop for food or a drink, and we can confirm that the Mojitos are pretty good :)
If you have any questions, or feedback just let us know.

Wow that was some walk down from Cable Cars. How long did it roughly take ?

The walk down from the cable car terminal back to the seafront took around 3 hours. That didn’t include when we first exited the cable car and just walked left a bit to look at the wicker toboggans and church before doubling back and doing the levada walk. Looking at the files on my GoPro it looks like in total we left the ship about 9am and got back about 3:30pm (might be an hour out though due to clock changes).
