- Today I am going to share my tips for making money teaching art and craft classes. We will discuss the 3 main types of classes to determine what kind of class would suit you best.
3 kinds of classes/teaching:
1. Full time art teacher in a classroom setting. Usually employed by a school or non-profit company.
2. Full time art studio where you are self employed in your own small business.
3. Freelance teacher where you typically travel from location doing art classes for groups or organizations, clubs or "sip & paints"

My aunt is an art director/teacher and has been doing it for 20+ years. She loves it …but the high energy can NOT be stressed enough. But her con, due to sticking to it for so long..she has a studio that she built in her backyard that is huge that she can teach out off. So her retirement (and work space) is all taken care of. Go Auntie!!!! I am in art school and she helps my stay focused..and that is not easy. I did take a business class in my program and I highly recommend it for all art students. Be realistic and get skills where you can eat while being artsy!!!
You are so kind Lindsay! That is how you become abundant; by sharing without fear! Good lesson!
Agree completely ❤
I actually did that for a number of years...
I taught arts and crafts at a local children's book store on Saturday mornings,
I taught art lessons through "continuing education" through our school systems.. it was evening classes...
I taught sewing for kids through the same system... really, you just have to look around, and you can find them.
Some seniors centers even have funds for hiring people to come in and do a demo, or lessons!
Great information Lindsay!!
Oh, and our local library actually pays for people to come in and teach classes in various things, from flower arranging to painting, clay crafting, that sort of stuff.
Hectanooga1 - Crochet, Knitting, Jewelry, Crafts, Cooking great tip! Most libraries have a "program" budget and a lot of librarians are scared to teach an art class LOL! (How do you think I got hired LOL!)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Because you're so dang cute????? That could be one reason... and you sparkle,
I can see the lights flashing all around you! And you exude confidence! I can think of quite a few reasons, besides the fact that you are just so talented!!
Hectanooga1 - Crochet, Knitting, Jewelry, Crafts, Cooking awww, thanks:D
Great advice I am looking to do this
Loved your comment on not withholding information on how to do a technique without paying for an additional class! I was at a bead store where I had spent hundreds of dollars in classes, crystals, silver, tools, etc. and asked how to do a wire wrap and they told me I needed to take a $35.00 class! You know it literally takes 1 minute to teach that. This store also treats their customers like thieves and makes you put your purse in a locker while you shop!!!!! Found myself a new bead store!
paulage1art you must do that! Terrible store...:(
I would LOVE to have the chance to teach art, but.....I am no where near being called a professional artist. I did not go to school for art. As a matter of fact I went to college for Accounting and ended up managing a store for 20 years! I have just dabbled in art since I was a child and then a few years ago decided I wanted to start crafty things. I now am into Mixed Media. How would someone like me even start up a business or classes being that They are not someone who studied art or ever worked in an art business? I love your videos and have been watching you for years. I want to say that what you said about not holding back anything you know about art is what truly makes you a lovable, kindhearted and talented person. thank you so much for all you do with your teaching, I love watching you.
over here in Singapore, average of public schools' class size is about 40 students. Conducting Art Lesson is really challenging! thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! I have been teaching a card making class at the local senior center for about 9 months. You gave some great input on actual questions that I have had in my mind about how to make this more appealing and how to have more income from the classes. My purpose, primarily, is to subsidize my own personal crafting experience. I will subscribe and check out your other marketing videos!
Great advice and ideas! When my youngest was in elementary I taught ( for free ) all 4 classes of 6th graders how to sand paint. All of those children had a blast and the pictures were so good. I like teaching young children they are like a sponge and building up there confidence make them better artists. Thank you
I love these types of videos! Thank you so much for sharing. I so appreciate it and I've been wanting to do this for so long!
Thank you so much Lindsay. You are such a passionate and giving person. I can totally see you in radio, you are perfect for that and for what you are doing now. Thanks for your great generosity of spirit.
+pfengwa44 aww, thanks!
Thanks for all the wonderful information. You really so share what you know, and not only about art. Thanks for all you do and all the people you help and inspire.
Great video! And great idea. I live in a smaller community that has many people looking/dyeing for something to do as a get away or a hobby. I may have to try this idea out. Thanks again. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks for sharing this Lindsay! I so wish I had your energy! I had taught a few workshops in the past and have been thinking about offering some more...thanks for inspiring me to get started again!
Hi Lindsey- great info. I am an art teacher, teaching in secondary school 11-15. I thoroughly enjoy it-however you are right- the paperwork, the grading, making sure I am meeting the outcome expectation ect are very time consuming. I wished I could work independently. But for now, teaching is what I enjoy, it is stable and I love it.
Thank you dear! You just answered so many questions I had not to mention many I hadn't even thought of yet! I LOVE the idea of teaching art birthday parties. Thanks again! Staci
Thanks....I so agree with the high energy requirement...We just began our 7th year of our after school program. While registering a new family last night the mother commented on the passion that I obviously have for my job...When sharing art projects with the kids (usually about 40 ) the high energy (since I don't know anything else) I hadn't thought about it...it's so crucial to have honest to goodness fun while you're sharing....I've been hesitant in doing classes outside of my regular job-but you've inspired me....thanks so much again and I do enjoy watching your shows. Lori at The Afterschool Place
Thank you so much for this. I've been thinking long and hard how to start a paint with pino or really launch the kids party deal, and this was the extra info I was looking for. You are a wealth of knowledge. I love all your videos! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this information, you are an excellent person and amazing teacher.
Love the video and your joyful infectious energy. I have recently retired and am eager to try and connect with other crafters in my community. Thanks for the information and encouragement. I am just going to jump and let the wings fly. Have an awesome day .
I paid to take a glass fusing workshop at a convention where the instructor was very stingy with information. I left the class feeling that I didn't actually learn anything. She didn't even give paper handouts for the students to take home. She complained that I was using her best glass even though she had told us all to use it. Bad experience.
Thanks Lindsay! Am thinking of starting classes so this was great to hear!
I'm overwhelmed right now with ideas! The stars must be aligned as I found Steve Mitchell last week and have binged watched his videos on youtube! Then I just happen to see the live stream with him, Marty and Denise and hear your name several times! I love your story and your energy! I thank you for being so passionate about sharing your knowledge. I feel the same. I come alive when I can teach folks anything and everything I know. I think I've found my niche. I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I was laid off from a full time art teacher job after 15 years,at a private school in the LA area I don't have a credential and I have been looking for work for 6 months and haven't had any luck.
Thank for the good ideas, I can't afford a studio in my area the rent is very expensive but I will try working parties I am going to look into a party planning for kids in my area. Thanks Again for all your Great Videos!
Lisa Blatt Good luck Lisa! If you can teach a class full of school kids you can do anything! I think a "sip and paint" would be so much fun!
Or you can teach privately in your home?
What a wonderful insight into your background. Thank you for sharing.
I think the most important thing about teaching art and craft classes is definitely to be engaging, be patient, and know your audience. I don't have any interest in teaching but I admire those who can teach well.
Thanks Lindsay, I just love your energy !!!
Lindsay,
I'm so glad that I found you on here. You have such a wonderful wealth of helpful information.
Thank you so much!!!
Wowzie!! You sound like a younger me.. L O L!!
I taught public school K-12 for 18yrs.. retired..
(the schools have now eliminated art from their programs.)
Worked part time at a day care art program..
(both gigs.. require lots and lots of patience.)
Many parents are looking for a cheap babysitter.
Taught from home.. We turned a 3 car garage into a studio.
Turned a warehouse into a working studio space for adult artists..
where they could work and display works for sale..
Did the Adult classes and workshops and now do free-lance work.
Now that I'm in my 70's It is easy extra income. work about 20 hrs a wk.
But being organized, business minded, and flexible are a requirement..
TFS... great video..
mzscarlett12345 and it is something you can always do unlike digging ditches! I hope to be teaching into my retirement years as well!
Amen sister! Love your passion and all your videos!
Thank you so much!
i have taugt art for over a decade in high school, a fellow teacher moved to Iceland, she said people do adult classes in art is very mainstream activity, one group she said had been going for over twenty years with the same people in it.
Wow
You have a charming personality; such great tips! I'm starting up my own drawing classes so this is all really great to learn about :) Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for sharing Lindsay. Love your ideas and enthusiasm x
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I agree that you should share what you have learned . I have 35 years as a florist i love it very much. I have a associates degree in interior design it has helped so much. Im getting ready to teach others this profession. Im charging $ 50 for 5 hours that includes suppliers. Im renting a large room at a crafts center $ 350 a month i make that in one day. Just do your research. I advertise on Craigslist , photo copies of sign you can display at other buisness of what you teach. Thanks for your insight.
thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much for sharing such valuable knowledge with us for free! I've been looking to teach mixed media classes but didn't have a clue where to begin. :)
Hi Lindsay - Love the video. One of my favorite parts was the, "flow chart". lol. You're sooooo generous with your time and tips! Love that you are the way you are!
Awesome video! I have been so concerned about getting product made, that I end up stressed because it doesn't happen overnight. This video made my frustrations melt away. Thank you so much. I am a new subscriber and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Love 💗 your sweater color and your sparkle! 💫
Great video Lindsay. Lots of good information. I'm thinking of opening a studio and currently working on the business plan. Hopefully the numbers work out. Thank you again for your inspiration!!!! Derwinism
Wow!! Great Info, I have taught art since the late 80's, tells you how old I am. Lindsay has many great ideas!!
You are SO correct about the library situation. I work in a library and offer card making classes. I can't tell you how many times people blow off a class after committing, not realizing or caring about the money that was spent on their behalf by the library. We also have the opposite where people just show up not having registered thinking that it is okay for them to participate even though I've only prepared for X amount of people and the class is full. It can be an absolute frustration. BTW, thanks for supporting your local library.
Thank you so much for genuinely sharing. I needed this video right now. I love, love, all your helpful info., And your encouragement.
Thank you dear, for the information.. I was considering freelance teaching, when I stumbled upon your video.. Lots of love.. I ll be following your videos.. 💕😍💕
This is a wonderful teaching video, Lindsay. I really feel like I got a lot out of this. You are such an uplifting and optimistic person, and I truly wish I lived close enough to take classes in person with you. Yes, I believe the more I share, the more I learn and wonderful phrase I heard years ago-do not remember who said it-Teaching is learning twice. I am teaching classes again, volunteering for the time being, but I will give teaching classes for $ some thought =) Thank you for your advice and your wisdom.
Thanks so much this was very helpful. I'm in the process of building my studio and I'm wanting to do classes from home. Ideally I would love to do craft weekend retreats...thanks again
Hugs
SHaz
I am on my way to finally starting my Paint and Sipping painting class art house in New Jersey. The starting process is very hard. Your video did lifted me up giving me hope. I have listened to many Podcasts about starting a business but your video is my very close reference. Thank you for taking the time and sharing all this great information. I hope I have as much luck as you do :) God bless you!
This was exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this inspiring video Lindsay and your lovely bubbly and enthusiastic personality :-)
Agatha Wydeveld thank you:)
Great information Lindsay. Just wish I had your energy. Keep up the good work.
I love your channel you share so much I so appreciate it but your personality I love just make my day...
I love the information that you are sharing.
Thanks Lindsay for all the great info you have been giving!!! Hugs Liz x
Great information and suggestions. I started teaching Zentangle and am working on ways to keep them coming back. I like the series suggestion and will probably try that. Thanks for sharing. And keep laughing! It is so real!
So much great information. Your very good at sharing!
I was distracted the whole time thinking about how much I wanted to steal your sweater! lol ;)
I was the same, except I'm lusting after those earrings! ;)
Did you make them, Lindsey? They look so pretty on you, I wish I could see them up close. tfs =)
I love her sweater too! And those earrings!
Yes, and those earrings!
LadyTrayce me too.lol
I just came!
I love how you are so adamant about teaching what you love!
Thankyou so much for this video Lindsey, I am an artist starting out (based in the UK) and your videos are inspirational- this is along the same lines of what I'd like to do- I have a real passion for art and making, and I think I have the right skills and personality to teach, in fact I already have run a workshop or two- but I'm really just at the beginning and your insight is so invaluable!!!! I will try and take a look at your blog and stay in touch, I am sure I'll be a regular viewer now that I am subscribed to your channel
much love, Jessie :D
Good luck Jessie!
I truly enjoyed your video today. I watched several of your videos today and was delighted to come across the multitude of options for creativity, plus the ways one can turn their life around to use their creativity to earn income.
Great video Lindsay. Thanks for sharing your experience.
You are great and your videos are so informative and very helpful. Thank you so much.
London xx
You are so much fun to watch and very informative thanks for sharing
Thank you! You give artists like me inspiration to keep going~
Hey Lindsay! Thanks for this video, it´s awesome and fully packed with inforamtion. Plus you really look great in this video (love your hair!)
I´d be interested in how you prepare a workshop, or if you just "go with the flow", just in case you are looking for further video ideas.
In general, i am very interested in how you organize(d) all your lessons and time. I´m just about to start my own business with art and craft workshops. Some things are very different here, (I live in Austria, Europe) but I am so grateful for your tips and tricks and insights. It makes me selfconfident that it is going to work. Thanks for that!
This is great stuff! I have been planning on doing exactly what you did for a couple years now. I have my company name and LLC set up and last year had a location next to a scrapbooking store so I knew I could get clients but then we moved. I am now finally getting back to things and needed some inspiration. I would love an example of your classes or how you came up with things. Unlike you I have an art degree and although I do have a lot of ideas focusing on inspiring people I would be curious to hear your tips. I will look at your other videos. Thanks for reaching out with this information to let me know that others have done it and succeeded :) I would mostly be doing it just for fun for myself so luckily I don't need to worry too much about my bottom line but of course I want to break even or make a little money as well.
Wonderful information! I am behind in watching your videos, but I intend to go get caught up now! I hope you have a fabulous weekend. TFS your wealth of knowledge. ~ Hugs ~ Pat
You are the living definition of a great teacher. Kudos and thanks.
Flat out amazing THANK YOU SO MUCH
You are so good and also ur videos are ver useful, clean and clear... Go on and rock.. Thankyou so much
love your sweater and hairdo. you are so nice to listen to.
Hey, I was in broadcasting too! I understand what you mean about the business being unstable. After being laid off from my last gig for a year I said no more. Now I work in a medical office. Big change, but stable, more money and most certainly better hours, lol.
This is great!! Thank you so much!
love this video. I do the in-home classes and birthday parties, they are fun! I also do bachelorette/girls night parties where i bring the wine and the crafts for ladies who arent into the bar sceen for their parties
you truly open my eyes ...... thanks for the great information
Thank you for sharing this I 've watched this video a few times just to make sure im not missing anything! Please share some more and would you please do one on how you started with CZcams and tips Thanks!!
I really like your energy and information! You passion for art! I really want to make money with my art and craft skills.
Love your videos. Thinking of teaching up to 4 kids max per class. Ages from 7-11yrs for 2hrs in my home. Really appreciate the information. Thank you!
I’m thinking same thing. Just starting out. What craft ideas can you recommend. Same age group. TIA
Thanks for the tips, I needed this
Thks Lindsay! You remind me of my twin sister who has such a generous spirit.
thank you!
This was very helpful thank you. I used to teach art for kids but it was too draining for me. Perhaps adult groups next :D
Thank you so much....very informative.
You are so kind. Always helping and sharing. You set an example of how to 'give of yourself'. One day, when you can find a few minutes, please make a video, " A day in the life of The Frugal Crafter". Love from Israel XXX
Newspapers and printing companies went the same way as radio. I learned graphics and phototypesetting for lithography.
Hi Lindsay,
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your energy and your video's. You always share so many tips and great art. It's people like you that make CZcams so enjoyable for me and others. Thanks again for all your inspiration and fun attitude!
Hugs and Happiness,
Briana
ThePinkstampergirl aww, thanks so much!
I want to love this a million times!!!
Great tips. Thanks for sharing
Great suggestions. Thank you!!
I think this is something I could really do, thank you
This was an awesome video. I just signed up on a site that helps refer customers to art teachers. Within 24 hours I possible client did contact me about teaching their child online. I'd love to do it but I am not set up for online teaching yet. But this seems very possible to teach freelance when I have a studio.
Wow ! You have an arrray of teaching experiences.
Excellent Video, thanks for the info
Mahalo from Kaua'i. Great and very practical tips delivered with a passionate voice. I will give you credit when I am up and running. My niche is that I also teach T shirt screenprinting. I hope to push that aspect. We also have a large tourist and time share population here in Kaua'i. A couple of my friends teach painting. Aloha from Hawaii!
+Hector Perez aloha! I have been to Hawaii 3 times, paradise!
No wonder you're frugal!!! I used to work in radio as a DJ, too. I know ALL about stretching a dollar until it almost snaps! Lol. I also worked the early morning and overnight shifts on the weekends while reporting traffic with a split shift full-time during the week. I got out of that business as technology (when all the songs, PSAs, commercials, tags, etc - everything - got put onto one big computer) came in and the need for a personality on air went out....oh yeah, and when it was obviously becoming a monopoly faster than you could say Boardwalk. Anyway, now I'm trying desperately to find ways to make money anyway I know how. I was already thinking about doing something with my arts and crafts when I ran across your video. Thanks for the info!
good luck! My husband just retired from Radio this year to work in my business too, it is possible:)
Excellent information...thank you!
I'm also this same life path and I do radio trying to teach art. I've sold globally and recognised but no degree in art snd don't really want to do another year at university for more debt
Thank you, sincerely, so appreciate this ❤
Best of luck!
This is great info, thank you! I am curious though, you mentioned you don't feel comfortable teaching in your own home. May I ask why that is? I am looking at my options on earning a bit of an income, but still be able to stay at home and be available to my kids who are all school aged. I have the space to teach in my home, but I am not sure if this the way to go or not?
Any thoughts?
Looking forward to the series you have put together :)
wonderful advice. Thank you!
This is amazing information I needed DESPERATELY...Any other videos like this you can guide me to??
I wish I can have a teacher like you....
Thank you so much ma'am
Luckily, with CZcams, we do!
First timer. Thanks 😊
Awesome Video Sister! 👍🏽
Awesome tips 👍🏻
Great information. Thank you for reading my mind. :)
