- PART 1: "1969-1998: The Origins of an Icon"
In the inaugural episode of our "The Legacy of Trinidad" series, we trace the prestigious lineage of Trinidad cigars, an emblem of Cuba’s rich tobacco tradition, national history, and cultural heritage. Viewers will discover why the historic City of Trinidad was chosen as the namesake for Cuba’s diplomatic cigar, signifying not only its historic importance but also the city’s global cultural impact.
The episode opens with the unveiling of Trinidad to the wider world: the discovery by Marvin Shanken and its inclusion at the famed 1994 Dinner of the Century. The piece then explores the historical importance and significance of Trinidad city to Cuba and the world.
We'll travel back in history to the earliest days of the El Laguito factory, where Trinidad was rolled alongside the Cohiba at El Laguito, the country’s most important and exclusive factory. From the onset, Trinidad was designated as a national treasure reserved exclusively for diplomatic gifts rather than public sale.
And, and, ultimately, the piece climaxes with interviews with Raul Valladares, the Master Blender who was tasked with creating the 1998 blend of the Trinidad Fundadores, with Ana Lopez, the Marketing Director of Habanos from 1994 to 2003. We learn first-hand about the incredible events leading up to the 1998 public release of the Trinidad Fundadores, an event that transformed Trinidad from a diplomatic emblem into an icon among cigar connoisseurs.

I'm astounded by the quality of this film! Not only does it provide a compelling narrative, but the cinematography is ineffable! My compliments to you and your team, another excellent film!
Wow, thank you!
Kirby my brother you are in a class of your own. Untouchable!
You're very kind! I'm very proud of this documentary. It is, by far, the most complex piece we've produced to date for the channel. Not just in the amount time it took to plan and film everything - a full five months - but in the editing complexity. Each episode is a collection of over 13 different segments that are strung together to, hopefully, create a compelling narrative.
@@kirbyallison The hard work really shows! thanks for everything you do!🚬
this is I N C R E D I B L E
The production is amazing!! Your work is definitely not going unnoticed. Great episode as always!
I’d love to see a “behind the scenes” look at some of the production
I never even knew Trinidad started as a Cohiba-esque private reserve. Cool documentary, well edited!. I like the subtitles and cuts done to streamline the interviews.
Thank you! Extraordinary amount of work went into this series.
Outstanding work sir! You stepped up your game so well in this my man. This was a side of your talent we have yet to see. Congratulations. You have officially leveled up. Watching your growth over the years has been a joy. Also, your channel has been pivotal to my growth as a cigar lover. Your content has changed my life. Thank you sir.
Wonderful show. Interviewing the people who played a role in these cigars and the culture was brilliant.
Thank you so much for this beautiful film, and for sharing it with the world. Much love from Sweden.
Cannot wait for Pt2
This series will stand a testament to the Trinidad brand - thanks to Kirby & the quality of guests are like a who’s who. Hoping we see Jemma in pt2
You won’t be disappointed!
I have to admit, and I'm certain I'm not alone, but its taken me some time to get around to watching all the amazing content you've recently dropped. Gotta give it our undivided attention. Stellar work as always sir.
Absolutely speechless once again, you have truly outdone yourself, Kirby. The gold standard. Thank you!
You're very kind!
Kirby thank you so much for sharing this history with us. I went to Cuba and to Trinidad in 2018 where I bought my first cigar. That video made me miss Cuba. I'm going to visit Cuban again someday.
Hey, another Cuba video! Love these :)
In addition to being an enjoyable watch, this video is a historical archive of the people who made it happen, so cool! Great job Kirby!
Indeed! I'm very grateful to have been able to capture a few of these legends on camera discussing the incredible unwritten history of Cuban cigars! I could spend months in Cuba filming... (and if you'd like me to, support our Patreon! ;) )
Excellent documentary!! Thank you!! I was fortunate to obtain three Trinidad cigars in 1998. A business associate heard me tell the story of the Trinidad cigar. He knew Dr. Nelson Mandela, and that he had just returned from a trip to Cuba to meet with Castro. He called Dr. Mandela and asked if Castro had given him any cigars? Dr. Mandela said "Why yes; Castro gave me a black chest of 50 cigars with "Trinidad" bands." My friends asked if Dr. Mandela might send him one for a friend of his, and Dr. Mandela, in fact, sent three Trinidad cigars that my friend surprised me with.
Wow! Well, if you don't ask, you'll never receive...
amazing story
Another beautiful episode (a real movie) with passion, joy and respect to the famous Trinidad cigars brand. What a pleasure to watch. Very professional work. You are really developing. Bravo, dear Kirby! 👏❤️
The production of these videos....excuse me...masterpieces, is simply INCREDIBLE.
Whoa! Was expecting another Italian episode, but this works! Magnificent! Beautiful work.
Trinidad is publishing this Wednesday + Saturday. Italy Ep3 publish next Saturday, June 15. The idea is that Italy will publish every-other Saturday in order to not over-saturate the channel.
@@kirbyallison Educational, historical and sociological value and fun. All boxes are checked.
Simply amazing content Kirby!Thank you
Kirby you keep impressing us with the high quality (craftsmanship and tradition) of the pruduction of your video’s
I love seeing the passion those workers have about their craft. Thats why Cuba and cuban cigars are special.
Holy smokes the production quality jumped to a new level on this channel, kudos for making a great documentary
Thank you. Yes, this has, by far, been my most ambitious and time consuming project of the channel. It was a real labor of love... now I'm ready to take a few months off! Because, wow, was it a lot of work! Totally all-consuming. But I'm happy you enjoyed it and hope that more are able to appreciate the incredible stories behind the Trinidad brand of cigars!
Enjoyed this video on a beautiful summer day in Connecticut outside, best lunch break I’ve had in a while. Great stuff.
I am so glad I found this channel. Thank you so much Kirby, for being one of the few people on the internet who can upload a 50 minute video, and make it seem only 10.
Great video Kirby. Beautiful informative production, kudos
Splendid! What an enchanting history and story. Thank you for the continued incredible content!
I'm glad you liked it!
Beautifully unfolding Trinidad, this piece captures its essence so compellingly that I have to watch it again. Kirby's passion is evident, adding depth to every interview.
I'd like to take the time to express how much the production and quality of this show has grown over the last few months. Kirby the channel has grown by leaps and bounds. Please congratulate yourself as you continue to bring us these insights into the high quality lifestyle tobacco affords us all.
Absolutely love your work and craftsmanship of these films. Always a highlight of my day when I hear my notifications for your channel. Keep up the spectacular and informative work.
I've been smoking this cigar for 20 years now and apart from Partagas lusutanias, is my favorite cigar ...thanks for this documentary....it is truly cherished Kirby 🙏
It is with great pleasure! Episode 2 perhaps even better than Episode 1! So, pull out a Fundadores and set it aside to enjoy while watching Ep2 this Saturday!
Absolutely incredible you were able to sit down and have conversations with these keepers of knowledge, there is quite literally no one else doing what you are doing my good man. You bring many hope for the future of classiness and sophistication. Regards, Limon.
Kirby, you are a true gentleman. Quality and passion in your channel is unmatched! Thank you for a very relaxing and great content I watch when I enjoy my cigars!!! Brilliant job :-)
Absolutely amazing interview with Barbara she is such a wonderful woman and a wealth of knowledge. I think this is one of my favourite videos so far Kirby!

Barbara is a gem! So kind and knowledgeable!
My word, beautiful post-production. I want to steal your editors.
¡Que interesante material!, la historia de Trinidad vinculada a personas amigas que forman parte del patrimonio tabacalero cubano. 🍃🍂💨🇨🇺
Very cool, Kirby! A real work of passion here.
Great video, great channel.
Wow! I didn't know nothing about Trinidad before watching this video. What a story! Also looking forward to whatever Kirby shot with Eddie here in DR.
More to come!
Kirby i've gotta say that fit in the first interview with the white trousers and the black suit jacket with the lightly striped shirt is top tier
The stroller he wore in the London segment was my favorite, elegant
This was your best work yet.
Approaching a million subscribers. Much deserved. Loving the growth visible in the quality of film and content.🇿🇦
Not fast enough...
Love the content as always. Minor gripe - something feels "off" about this one. Not sure if it's the use of green screen, or the audio, or what.
Sipping a Cocktail Puffing on a Handmade Cigar.. and watching this video you add value to the Cigar Experience.
Truly amazing video. I appreciate the effort you put in. Hopefully can shake your hand next week in London. Best,
Amazing!
What a phenomenal video Kirby. Loved every bit of this piece of history put in the video. Truly a masterpiece of production from your side bringing the cigar aficionados even closer to each other making them want to smoke a Fundadores and savor every moment. Salute from Pakistan.
Hi Kirby, great work. Just curious, if you ever thought of making a video about Bijan Suits?
Great video. Loves the cigars. They just don’t justify the 550% increase in price from were they were originally.
The price increases have no doubt been painful... but if you look at the prices of New World cigars these days, you could always say that they were simply underpriced.
@@kirbyallison well everything just sucks now! Did ajay mention what that box would be worth at this point?? If right now the grail as we know is the cohiba gran reserva i would say this would have to be worth more. Not even close.
What an amazing video. Truly lovely to watch
Great job, Kirby!
Wao excelente documental extraordinario muchas gracias felicidades bendiciones
Gracias!!
Kirby this is amazing. Your gift of storytelling is trumped only by your love of cigars. You are a national treasure! Bravo.
You are very kind! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent! Great work! All the best!
This is incredibly interesting. Thank you for making this content.
Brilliant start to a series Kirby! much better to have subtitles, than a translator as in your previous series on cuba. Excellant insight into the history of the Trinidad brand
Great quality video. 👌
Kirby this is an outstanding production. I am half way through and want to ration myself, as I don't want it to finish. The Cubans' passion for this Cigar just shines through. I bet Ajay had your heart racing when he opened that cabinet of 50, signed by Fidel no less! Trinidad will certainly be on my bucket list for my next visit to Cuba. Best wishes, and thanks for the videos. K
Well, make sure you finish before Saturday, because Episode 2 in this series releases then!
Wow Kirby outstanding film. This is what you do best 👌
Excellent video Kirby! Very well done. Makes me want to light a cigar...cheers! 🥃
Don't pass up a good opportunity!
Kirby make my day again ~~~
Thank you for making such a perfect documentary
Love Trinidad.
What a pleasant surprise 🤩
Never knew you'd make this; and thanks, Trinidad is my favorite brand after RyJ. Please do RyJ one day.
👍🏻👍🏻
This was indeed a great documentary. It is always a pleasure to hear from some of the people who were around at the conception and launch of such a special product.
A+ topic and perfect execution on the exposé!
Excellent video and the translation method is on point.
Congratulations Hermano , what a legendary video, Amazing , exceptional well done ,
Very kind, Jasim! Am I going to see in in London for the Habanos World Days?? I was jealous of you and Ajay hanging out in Dubai!
Network level stuff sir.
You should have your own program on tv excellent, been smoking cigars since 1965 you have best on cigars ive ever seen!

Kirby, you should have a Netflix Show. Love your work! Saludos from Switzerland 🇨🇭⛰️
Thanks for this educational experience Kirby. Do you plan to do other brands as wel? Like H.Upmann & Hoyo?
In the video the director of marketing mentioned that a special blend was created for their 1998 commercial release. What was the the original blend used from when they were first created in 1969 up to that point in time and was the taste different?
Yes!!!😎🇨🇺🇨🇺
Kirby will be presenting shows on the History Channel soon!
Wow…
KIRBY Hello. I am Ricardo from México... I ´ve have bought a Dupont Lighter and I want to know your experience about traveling with your Lighter .. Its posible to travel with my Dupont Lighter in my luggage? thank you and congratulations
I would be careful. There is no consistency between countries. And I have had heard about a lot of people getting their lighters taken in Mexico.
I smoked Trinidad way before Cigar Magazine discovered TTT.
You're a very lucky man!
In the Illustrated Encyclopedia, Martínez stated that Trinidads were actually a lower-level diplomatic gift than Cohiba cigars, made with a tobacco blend similar to that used in the Cohiba vitolas, but without the third barrel fermentation that Cohibas receive. IS THIS TRUE?
I see Kirby’s spanish improving!!
If you want to have some fun, set the audio language to Spanish… 😅😆
@@kirbyallison Hey Kirby I speak Spanish myself and put it in Spanish for a minute but I just couldn’t 😂
Nice video, Cubans are good but I find the new world cigars much better such as Dominicans , Nicaraguan , Ecuador , or a blend of these .
cool
come on man this is documentary quality of a video which goes far beyond regular youtube video.
what size is that beuty you have while talking in the intro?

If the lady that was part of the 4 women to make the cigar blend that was released in 1998. Who was the blender of the first trinidad that was being made for fidel to give to the diplomats and which eventually was debuted at that gala in 1994?
Trinidad Robusto extra is the fantastic cigare. Rip :(
What’s the deal with the lapel chain? Purpose?
Great video as always, but what the hell is up with the editing. We have what looks like a deep fake Kirby at one point and then a slowed down Kirby in another 🤷
Will you be in London ??
I arrive Thursday, June 12, for the Habanos World Days.
@@kirbyallison in which case it’ll be great to meet you on the Saturday. What an event it promises to be.

When Cigar Afficianado interviewed Fidel Castro in 1994, Shanken asked him about Trinidad and Castro said he’d never heard of them:
Shanken: Trinidad. We understand that it is a brand of cigar that is your own personal brand, which you give to diplomats and friends as presents.
Castro: No. I principally give Cohibas for presents.
Shanken: You don't give Trinidads?
Castro: No. I don't give Trinidads. I give Cohibas. I have been advising the people who are in charge of tobacco production, Cubatabaco, that they should come up with new brands and new blends. This would help the situation with the conflicts over the brands [with similarly named cigar brands from such countries as the Dominican Republic and Honduras]. If we have the best raw material, we have the best soils and the best know-how, why shouldn't we create new brands?
Shanken: The El Laguito factory has a brand called Trinidad, which they say is for you to give as personal gifts. It has become a legend.
Castro: I am not fully aware of that brand, but I assume it is like the Lancero in size from Cohiba.
Shanken: It is the same size, but with a little darker wrapper. Are you going to allow Cubatabaco to sell it?
Castro: I don't know about that cigar. I always had the Cohiba like this (points to a Lancero) and sometimes a little smaller. It is really unfortunate that the American cigar smoker cannot purchase cigars from Cuba. But I will tell you an anecdote about that. You know that [President John F.] Kennedy was the one that set up the blockade. Every time a friend of his came back from Cuba, he made sure that he brought back some Cuban cigars.

No! Italy - all 20 episodes - is going to release every-other Saturday into eternity...
@@kirbyallison incredible!!!!!
You can't smoke a single Cuban brand cigar off the shelf unless it's a regional or limited edition.
They need at least 5 years of ageing to be enjoyable.
"Tobacco was one of the first things that the Spanish took back with them to the New World"
They took it back to the Old World. Old World = Europe, New World = Americas
.................................................................................💝
Reason y cohiba has more presence over trinidad since it was such a special secret brand? Is it cuz cohiba came first from fidel so they gotta push it to this day as the most important brand? Now i want to smoke only smoke trinis over my cohibas. The secret cigar brand 🤐

Rename this video " interviews in Trinidad" . Geez. Let's see some good visuals and tours not chair conversations.
It’s a documentary. What you expect can be found by using search function on youtube but maybe try to type Trinidad + travel vlog or cinematic short film or 4k Drone video.
@veerachow nice try on being a smart ass but you failed. Watch other cigar docs and tell me how many scenes you see in the same spot with multiple interviews and barely any B roll footage. This entire 1 hour is literally sit-down interviews like an interrogation. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but others will agree it's not great.
