- Welcome to my first day in Cuba! I am thrilled to embark on a journey through Havana's rich tapestry of quality, craftsmanship, and tradition while visiting Cuba for the FIRST TIME for the 23rd Annual Habanos Festival!
As I eagerly await the arrival of my esteemed friends Edward and Eddie Sahakian, Jemma Freeman of Hunters & Frankau, and others, I set out in this episode to take care of a few essential preparations for the week ahead!
Join me as I visit the esteemed bespoke Guayabera maker, Emiliano Nelson, to commission a custom Guayabera, an iconic symbol of Cuban elegance. Then, we'll step into the historic Partagas Shop, where I'll select some premium cigars, each reflecting the island's deep-rooted cigar culture, to enjoy during the week. And, finally, to cap off this momentus first day in Cuba, I visit the legendary Floridita for one of their famous daiquiris, a perfect toast to the start of an unforgettable week in Cuba. This episode is not just about the places and items; it's about immersing in the essence of Havana, experiencing firsthand the blend of tradition and passion that makes Cuban culture so unique. So, let's set out on this incredible adventure together!

God bless Cuba,,,,great people
Indeed! Thank you for saying this. The people of Cuba are, indeed, incredible! And I hope to honor that through this series!
There is a saying in Sweden: "He who waits for something good, never waits too long." As a swede, I can say that this
has shown to be very true in this case. Not only do we now have the privilege of finally taking part of this magnificent content -
we have also had the pleasure of looking forward to it for quite some time. Knowing what was about to come - Cuba, the Sahakians,
fine cigars - I must admit that the wait started to become a little bit frustrating. But now that the episode is here, what does
it matter? He who waits for something good, never waits too long!
Well said! The editing was a MASSIVE project that took longer than we expected. And our standard is only the best. So, it was without question we took the extra time to do the series right.
You’ll love the rest of the content. It only gets better. At this point, I’ve now watched every episode several times, and I still find myself enjoying each just as much - if not more - than the first time I watched them!
As a video editor myself, I can only imagine the amount of work behind this series. Especially considering the high standards you have when it comes to content and your own performance. You can be sure that we, the viewers, appreciate the hard work that goes into this. It's always top quality content! @@kirbyallison
I don't know, I can't agree with you on this one. I copy paste my comment to Kirby here because it fits as an answer to you.
I would have liked to see an introduction of Cuba in your first episode. Where you use drone footage, you know from a height of 20 m 70 feet or so, showing the beautiful city with its marvellous architecture, Oldtimers, the beautiful people etcetera. Like a real opulent introduction of Cuba. And then maybe walk with the Sahakian's around the city, smoke cigars and talk, or sit in a cafe or something different for a nice introduction into Cuba. That would have been great. And then later on, like the second episode, you could start introducing us the local craftsman like Emiliano. This was too quick, no transition, just straight into the scene with Emiliano. I don't know, I think you guys could have done it better, like you showed us again and again in the past. I don't know, maybe I had too high expectations, but I hoped it would be special, and this felt more like a typical standard episode. You know, the introduction/first episode, the first impression, is the most important. You could have set the stage right for everything else that follows with this episode. But I don't want to sound pessimistic, I know this is just the beginning and the real gems are still coming. I am still very excited and waiting for the exceptional ones!
@@Kenny-yl9pcI responded to this earlier. We did all of these things. But since it is a SERIES and not a MOVIE, they’re spread across the various episodes. Sadly, you’ll have to simply wait and watch the entire series to take all of this in. 😅
Fellow Swede here who completely agrees! 😉🇸🇪
I wish I got a dollar for every time you repeat “quality, craftsmanship and tradition”
I’ve waited so long for this series and it’s finally here !
It’s here! Grab your popcorn 🍿and cancel your Netflix subscription!!
@@kirbyallison With all the quality content on CZcams (yours included of course good sir), I've personally never needed a Netflix account 😄
Another masterpiece from the Kirby Studios! The type of production where I light a cigar (worthy of Kirby's approval), prepare a cafecito and watch away......
Couldn’t think of a better and more appropriate way to enjoy one’s Saturday!
Man you made me cry. As Cuban myself that only went back to the island for the first time after 11 years away with my English kids this give me back the desire to visit again next summer. My children loved it and I am so glad I took them there for many many reasons, but the main one was to make them understand why their "mami" is the way she is. Thank you for this series, 😊
Please use better grammar. You are embarrassing me, as a Cuban American.
@@eva5601 .... I'm NOT Cuban American thanks to God. I'm Cuban living in Europe and my first language is still Spanish, second English, french and German. What about you darling?
Enjoyable video, I have really been looking forward to this series.
Your visits to the Sahakian’s shop and my own fascination with cigars inspired a personal trip to Cuba in January. My experience visiting Cuba was entirely different and it’s a shame that this series will be sanitised. The Partagas store was barren and then they only had about 5-6 varieties to choose from and no boxes of note.
Generally speaking, it was very difficult to get hold of anything at all… even food, including basics such as chicken, bread and potato were extremely scarce even for tourists and we found locals queuing all day just for family basics, even just 100 feet from the area you visited in this video.
Whilst I understand that this channel is highlighting the quality and traditions of Cuba, it is very important that people realise the struggle of the Cuban people. There is plenty of information out there but please go see it for yourself or you will never understand. It is heartbreaking.
Looking forward to the rest of the series Kirby!
Emiliano Nelson should have an online store. The shirts are certainly unique.
Couldn’t agree more!
the uniqueness is being perserved by not having an online store…
Does he have good access to materials?
Uhm. About that....😂
lol it’s Cuba. Emiliano like all Cuban people are not free and he cannot do that
Kirby, you could have your own TV show. Production value is on point 👌
When René said "I work for you" after purchasing boxes, you know you’re in good hands!
Rene is a class act!
I think he said "I wait for you."

Amazing. You're living the dream. Can't wait for the next videos.
More to come! And they only get BETTER! I can promise you that. Very, very exciting series ahead of us. I’m very proud of the work we have done.
Candy store indeed!
Thank you, Kirby! Such a wonderful episode! I truly felt happy for you seeing you buying cigars like a child in a candy shop.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I hope you do more travel oriented content. Love it!
Yes! We already have some great stuff in the pipeline. This Cuba series plus one from Italy we already filmed!
Phenomenal first episode. Looking forward to being in Havana again this coming February. Can’t wait for the next episode.
The look on Kirby's face as he lights the cigar - his excitement is on full display. Genuine emotional coming through the video.
Cant wait for the remainder of the series!! Excellent production Kirby!
Every Saturday for the next 2.5 months! Cuba will pull you squarely into the New Year!
Finally, I am so excited to see. Cigars and the scenery with great company!
we're spoiled. Such a great video.
What an incredible gift for her to role that cigar for you. Loved that
I know!
Unbelievable episode. Brilliant!
I spend my honeymoon in Havana just over 10 years ago, fantastic location. The music, people, dancing, and amazing food and drink, as you enter what you think is a restaurant but is actually just a room in someone’s house where you’re welcomed in with home cooked food.
Absolutely fantastic episode. Your productions just keep getting better and better. Thanks for taking us along, Kirby!
Always a treat
So excited for this series.
Our man in Havana 🎉
Ive been looking forward to watching these episodes and am going to enjoy them
A long awaited treat! Thank you Sir for spoiling us with this account of your trip! I adore Jemma not to mention Edward and Eddie.😊
Well done Kirby. Brings back memories of my first ever cigar, a Montecristo 25 years ago in Jamaica on my wedding day. I have not smoked a Cuban since unfortunately, but it was a Cuban cigar that launched me into the wonderful world of cigars.
Greetings from Barbados Kirby. That is very special being in Cuba and having all of it at your finger tips. I so enjoy your trips to London as well. I’m going to be in London next week on a very tight schedule. So hoping to to get time to visit Davidoff of London. It will be a true honor to get an opportunity to meet Edward and or Eddie. Such gentlemen. Thanks for all you do. Truly enjoy your Chanel..
Say hello for me!!
This has been worth waiting for! The quality of the production is first class! I eagerly await episode 2😊
What a quality content Kirby, thanks very much for letting us enjoy this fantastic experiences with you

So excited for this series! Amazing work Kirby
Good things come to those who wait! Great episode Kirby, looking forward to the next one! Keep up the great work 👍
May I suggest on the next series with subjects speaking a language other than English that you keep the persons dialogue and use subtitles instead? It's nice to really hear their inflections and emotions, and let the passion in his voice come through. I do understand the need for a translator and the translators audio can be recorded on a separate track to be used to write the subtitles. Excited to see the series!
The translator is there for Kirby as well. ;)
Translation is actually VERY difficult with video production. We did it a few different ways. To keep translation totally separate, it basically doubles or triples the time to film the segment.
On our last trip, we experimented with simultaneous translation through an earpiece for me. Technically quite complex to manage on set (again - loads of audio equipment required with wires running everywhere).
And then there is the issue of translation and subtitles. All very expensive and time consuming.
Don’t think we haven’t through about it extensively. This was our first time filming with foreign language.
Thanks@@kirbyallison for replying. I'm wondering if, in this case, your crew was to mic you, the translator and the guayabera maker with ISO recorders then that might allow each of you to speak naturally (and to each other) and then in post, the edit team would have three tracks of audio to work with and could use the translators track to generate subtitles while keeping the guayabera makers track the one the viewer hears. Just a thought.
@@onocoffee if I’m understanding you correctly, the challenge with this is that you get bleed from the other people’s audio into all the tracks. Still makes it difficult to isolate.
On the most recent trip, we determined that the translation was most important for me since I’m the one doing the least talking. So, we placed my translator in a totally separate room so that his audio wouldn’t bleed and piped it into an earpiece for me. So, I was able to benefit from simultaneous translation. My questions would then be translated by a second translator for the subject that just spoke.
@@kirbyallisonOh wow, that is quite a setup. Thanks for the chat - and love the extra laces and chamois with my order!
Excellent video. Beautifully produced
It only gets better from here!
Another very good video.
This is fantastic!
Very excited for this 10 part series. The highest quality content on CZcams by far. These mini series are absolutely incredible, could be a Netflix documentary. Just superb work Kirby!
Very kind!
Ten part series isn't exactly "mini"
This is an amazing amazing content, full of history of the Cuban culture. Thank you Kirby for bringing this to CZcams.

Yes very true and funny. Pre marketing age!
Yeh very down earth guys. Not pretentious at all.
I think there was a language barrier
@@doater thats my point. But also there is a cultural barrier. Translate how they talk to each other, they arent having conversations that are like an English dandy.
@@ar007r the cultural difference is evident. They also like to keep some mystique around their products by not saying too much about it
Love Havana! One of the best places, I have ever been. Me and my wife, we spent beautiful days there.
It really is! I'm taking the entire family there for New Year's.
You look like a Bond villain! Cool.
