Nobody would ever deny that Steven Moffat is a fantastic writer. When he’s able to focus and he’s not trying to do too much, he’s capable of just stunning work. I won’t even say Boom was my favorite of his, but it’s the first all time classic episode of who to add to the cannon since he left

@@Jack-zz7bc Time is the biggest thing. Moffat had time to prep for series 5, got concessions to rejigger things for series 8 and 9, and had more time to think about series 10. And in the intervening time when he's also showrunning Sherlock and being with his family amongst other things, he still banged out The Day of the Doctor, Last Christmas, Heaven Sent, Listen, The Impossible Astronaut, Extremis, World Enough and Time, and rewrites of The Doctor's Wife amongst other episodes that might be mid-Moffat but would tower over most other writers' contributions.
I firmly believe people get too caught up in how good his first 4 stories were and ignore how strong the show still was when he ran it. Give me a timey wimey arc that might not quite make sense over the DoctorDonna or Timeless Child breadcrumbs any day.

Edit: Now that I’ve thought about it, Boom was a much more politically conscious episode than 73 yards. Boom took what could have been a sci fi action episode and turned it into political commentary. 73 yards took what could have been a very political episode like Turn Left or Years and Years, and cut all the potential commentary out of it besides for the threat of nuclear war. The slitheen two parter back in 2005 had just about as much political perspective.
