What are the best Macedonian units in Rome: Total War?

  • In this video I present my opinion of Macedon's roster in Rome: Total War in campaign setting. What are the best units and what are trash? The units are not measured only based on their fighting capabilities but also on how easy it is to recruit them, how well you can rely on them, and so on.
What do you think? Should a unit be higher or lower in the tier list and why. Share your opinion in the comments!

Light lancers are really good carried me on VH, stack like 10 of them in an army and they work so well with the phalanx units who hold the enemy in place for you to charge into their back. They really struggle late game tho with like no armour but early on they beat any other cav you'll face.

Agreed. At least in my opinion a whole lot better unit than other light cavalry of greek factions. Thanks for the comment.

I'd argue the levy phalanx is better than the militia hoplites. Their longer spears and bigger manpower mean they can occupy space and engage the enemy while you wrap around their flanks and hammer and anvil the enemy with lancers. These two units can win you basically any battle in the earlygame.
The fact that they have 120/240 men also means they're very good at keeping towns' unrest since that's dependent on the numver of soldiers, not their strength. At the same time they're good enough to autoresolve small rebel armies (unlike the peasants) and can hold off small enemy armies that sneak around and besiege towns.
So instead of having peasants that bolster public order and militia hoplites that are equally good at defending cities, just take levy phalangites and call it a day. You'll be much happier with them, believe me.
I also find it kinda redundant to have general's bodyguards in tiers. Not only are they very similar for almost every faction, since they share models it also leads to a lot of confusion imo.

Thanks for the comment and the detailed argument. I agree that the image with general causes some confusion but in my opinion, for some factions, the bodyguards are more important than to some others.
I can understand your reasoning with levy pikemen. In my experience they tend to break a bit too easily, and require higher tier barracks. Thus I think militia hoplites are better overall. I agree that they fight better overall. (except vs missiles) :)

I really don't understand how militia hoplite being more superior than pikemen. They are essentially just peasants with spears. In early game, yes, they are probably the best compare to their factional counterparts but soon become obsolete when pikes come out. If you treat them the same way you treat the peasant unit, not as combatant, they might as well just get the S tier.

Thanks for the comment. In my gameplays there has not been too much difference how easily pikemen rout compared to militia hoplites. They also require 1 tier higher barracks to build and are very vulnerable to missiles. I agree that they have more men and in 1v1 they would win. Maybe it is because of different playstyles :)

@@qualityoldgames7721 Levy Pikemen perform better than Milita Hoplites period. I test them not only against militia but also other units like Nile Spearmen and when out of guard mode they can win, and that's a stronger unit by stats than Militia Hoplites. Take into account when you are playing a Macedon campaign you will be facing most likely other Greek faction which will start off mostly using Militia Hoplites and at best regular Hoplites and Levy Pikemen will be performing much better than their cost and stats will indicate. The fact they also take out more from the population due to their larger unit size means they make for great early garrison units that can remove squalor and keep your settlements protected against enemy attacks. Shorter spear Phalanxes like militia just break up too easily against stronger units from what I have experienced where as longer Pikes hold the enemy at bay much longer due to their reach. and the vulnerable to missile trait does not really mean much because most neighboring factions don't get access to archers so soon and Peltasts need to get close to use their javelins and run out of them quickly. Only Roman Pilums are of any threat do to their damage and your job should be to make them come to you or flank them quickly with cavalry before they do that and it's not like militia are any better at handling that kind of missile fire anyway.

@@qualityoldgames7721 Think I am agreeing with you on this one in terms of the tier ranking. Levy pikemen are better, but not that much better so will usually skip them and head straight to the tier 3 barracks phalanx pikemen. Milita hoplites are good enough on defence in town square, and on offence do the job of tying up a unit while your lancers hit them in the rear. Usually keep my general unit behind them though for the added morale boost.

The strength of macedon is more in their campaign than their units. Some of the best shrines and starting settlements. And light lancers are just stupid op. Hilarious how they get greek cav at the next tier of stables which is the worst cav in the game lol

I think the Macedonian ranged units are a cut above most, as the temple of Artemis gives them weapon bonuses. It's very easy to get +3 on your peltasts, which brings them close to roman pilum, except they have more ammo. Peltasts are also worth keeping if going east, as you encounter chariots and elephants. The extra damage on the javelin helps here. But the archers really shine if you have the temple of Artemis, and doubly so if you hire Cretan archers. I also believe you can build the temple of Ares to give yourself experience bonuses. Combined with blacksmith armour upgrades, Macedon has the best archers in the game. They are more easily available than pharaoh's bowmen, but reach insanely high missile attack. From behind the safety of your pike phalanx, Macedon's archers will massacre almost any army that cannot form a testudo.

You can get that with the temple of Vulcan Scipii which works for all units but also spam archer auxilia who are superior maybe not to cretan archers but they are retrainable at least and only one turn to recruit so underrated imo but that's still hype!

Yeah sure, this video is about Single Player, but hear me out: Macedon is amazing in MP. Especially Hoplite factions are usually very lopsided, the Greek city states have no cav for example, the Seleucids have amazing cav, but they are vulnerable to missiles since they lack long-range archers + have small shields. Pontus is basically a worse Seleucia in MP.
    Macedon is different:
They have regular archers + Cretans which not just means that they have an amazing ranged component, but they are flexible in choosing what they need (looking at you, Germania, lacking *cheap* archers).
Their Royal Pikemen have large shields and can actually keep up with Spartans well enough, sometimes even beating them if you outplay your opponent. Reliable all around.
Companion Cav is not the best, but it's good enough, Light Lancers are cheap and pack a punch.
Macedon is flexible, you can basically bring Macedon to every battle and adjust your army to your opposing faction, Macedon always has an ace up its sleeve. They work in CWB, both low and high money, and 31k, but I guess this is obvious at this point.
