I signed up for the trial version of Sync and have already found two things about it that worry me. 1. Upload speed is definitely on the slow side. I plan to use Sync primarily to request files from clients and some of those files may be on the large side. I don't want to worry about the clients getting impatient watching the upload progress bars slowly moving across their screens and giving up and exiting out of the upload. 2. When I did some test file request uploads, all the files I uploaded had the date appended to the end of their filenames. I find that annoying and unnecessary. I tried reaching out to Sync about disabling the feature that appends dates to the end of filenames multiple times and ways (email, Twitter, Facebook) but haven't heard back from them yet. I really like a lot of the features of Sync and hope it can work for me. I'll give them a few more days to respond, but right now between the upload speed, or rather lack thereof, and what appears at the moment to be the inability to respond to customer support related inquiries, things are not looking good for them to be my next choice for my cloud sharing service needs.
Thank you for this review. I just signed up for sync. I got the team unlimited plan. I have 2 questions. Is there a way to view video files in the vault on a device such as a phone or PC without having the file on the PC or phone? Can you play it from the cloud only? Second question. Can the website be set up so my team member and I don't see or have access to our private folders like the vault? Like do we each have our own vault? Once again thanks for the review and for your time.
Have you tried onlyoffice or collabora office? I'm looking into those as they purport to have document editing/collaboration capabilities similar to what you find in Google Docs or Sheets (which integrate very well with Drive) - I'd be curious if anyone has tried either of these and has feedback.
To keep things secure in Google Drive, encrypt your files prior to uploading them. This *could* work for shared files, you just have to make sure no one uploads a file that hasn't been encrypted. As for clients, well, that's probably not the best solution.
Im struggling to organise my various cloud drives in bulk. Its absolute nightmare. All of a sudden I'm sitting with almost a TB on 4 different accounts over 10yrs with some files that must be kept indefinitely as per regulatory compliance requirements. Many of these have up to 10+ duplicates of files, media and backups. And its a nightmare to manage and increased costs creeping 😭 but not only did I find out they are not safe in cloud from hacking, nor hijack for ransom amd other access restrictions are not robust
(To the inevitable "why do you care?" comments) I usually refrain from recommending black-box software to my friends and family for reasons that I hope are obvious. As a software developer, I'm interested to know what exactly the Sync clients are doing on my devices, and I'd like to validate the company's claims about their product without breaking any weird ToS about "reverse-engineering" or "de-compiling" or similar. I'm not interested in their server-side software, since I could not verify that their servers are running any specific source, open or not, and the company's claims here are about client-side encryption. I respect that not everyone cares whether any part of the source code is available, since most people don't want to read source code, but I always appreciate having the option, again for reasons that I hope are obvious.
Love your videos! Can you make one about having burner emails and designated email accounts for things like shopping, family & friends, work, CZcams, etc. I pretty much use one email account for everything so switching the email address for my online accounts would be a tedious and time consuming process. This may be a noob question, but you speak with authority when it comes to this "end to end encryption". How do you know with certainty that they CAN'T see your files whenever they feel like it?
Unless I am missing something, the encryption is happening on the server's computer. That means that you have to put 100% trust into that computer, and the people that control that computer. That computer is owned by, and controlled by, compete strangers. They can (and probably do) build a profile on your in-the-clear data that you upload to them. Yes, you have an encrypted tunnel between you and the server. But once your data reaches the server, it gets decrypted. Ergo, those that control the server have 100%, in-the-clear, access to your uploaded files. The server might encrypt your files upon receipt (you have no way to confirm whether or not they do so, no matter what they claim). But they might first index your files for your profile, before they encrypt your files. If you have business trade secrets, or any files that can result in great harm if made available to others, then you are nuts for uploading those files to complete strangers. It makes no difference that those servers are run by big tech companies. You are handing over your confidential data to complete strangers. And we already know that big tech companies spy on nearly everything that we do. And those are the people that you are going to upload your personal files to? The executives could have a master key, to decrypt any files that they are storing. It is simple for them to have master keys, and there is no way for you or anyone to know. The only safe way for you to share sensitive files with a 3rd party platform is for you to encrypt your files on your own, local, computer. Upload only files that you have already encrypted. Yes, this makes it inconvenient for both you and the people with whom you are sharing your files. But privacy and security comes at the price of convenience. And if you ever become a person of national interest (post goes viral, running for public office, involved in a criminal case, win the lottery, write a hit song or make it into the movies, etc), these 3rd party storage sites will be likely be able to use a master key and decrypt your files. If you were an executive at one of these 3rd party storage services, and you could look at the files that Madonna uploaded, or Hillary uploaded, or Trump Jr. uploaded, etc, would you resist looking? When they claim to use encryption, it means that they encrypted your in-the-clear files. If your files were not in-the-clear, then they would not be touting that they use encryption. They have 100% clear access to your files. You must encrypt files yourself. If I'm not mistaken, I can't download a folder from Sync back to my desktop, which is a big negative for me. I can't always be online when I travel so I like to be able to have a folder downloaded to laptop for that.
Why can't you? Sync works in a similar manner to Dropbox. You have a single folder called Sync and everything inside that folder (to include sub folders) is automatically synced to your computer. If you accidentally deleted the folder from your computer and it's inside your Sync directory, it would be deleted from Sync too. However, Sync uses versioning for files, so you could log into the Sync web console, restore your deleted folder, and then it would sync back to your computer.
Even though I had protection on my computer, not only was Dropbox hacked, but they scrambled all my files on my computer, as well as duplicated files. I will never use the cloud unless I was a business owner and truly needed employees to share.
Here's what I can't figure out: Google Drive's killer feature (for me) is integration with the Sheets and Docs apps. Those apps work really well. What privacy focused DOCX / XLSX editor do you use once you're in the Sync ecosystem?
Have you tried Collabora Office yet? If so and it doesn't work for whatever reason - please let me know and save me some time ha. If not, then I'll give it a test drive and let you know what I think.

Disappointed, I had to sign up for the demo account before i found out there is NO linux client software. The have mac version which is on a unix clone, why not linux?
I can appreciate wanting to get off Google Drive for many reasons, but isn't this just switching which company you're dependent on from Google to Sync???
Kind of, but not really. With Google, you’re pushed into their ecosystem and end up using their file versions (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.). When using sync, I can literally move the file from one folder to another because I own the file and the file type. (As opposed to having to “export” via that Takeout page from Google).
@@brien. Your opinion is subjective. How slow is slow? What is your network connection speed? What are you uploading that's so slow? What features is it lacking? I have no complaints.
I just checked it out and ya its not for me. Its $8 per month. Actually they dont offer unlimited file versions. 180 days for the $8 a month account and & 365 days for the $20 a month account. I use synology drive off my synology nas and unlimited file versions for as long as i want to store them and it comes for free with my NAS :) and I don't have to trust any cloud providers. Is the sharing as advanced as sync no but its good enough for my needs.
Ha! Thanks for asking. I got hit with an elbow to the eye while playing basketball. Thankfully no stitches but hopefully it won't look this bad for very long. 😂
A bit disappointing and kind of suspicious. Sync has some of the worst transparency I've seen (check out reddit threads on them) and doesn't seem to be end-to-end encrypted. They use terrible technical terms like "zero knowledge encryption" that mislead customers and are an insult to this industry. It's also not open-source. How can we trust content on the channel when it's clearly one of the worst, most misleading options? Honestly, I'll probably unsubscribe if there isn't some kind of explanation in the comments or on Twitter. My preferences: Tresorit (Swiss, discussed in comments) NextCloud (as private as you host it yourself) Skiff (open-source, 10 GB free) ProtonDrive (open-source, trustworthy, long history) You didn't even mention these in the ad?
Gotta love the hate from people like Dave 😝 The truth is that I looked at a lot of different companies and decided on Sync.com. There are so many different options that I honestly never considered NextCloud. I'm sure they're good, but I've never tried them.
I thought about Sync, I have the 5 free GB account, plus added 2 people, but how many server locations do they have? Like to keep copies of you data. I chose OneDrive for a few reasons. No ones gunna hack their servers or have access. Plus they keep you data in 5 different locations across the world. I keep all Mt family photos on my OneDrive and feel secure. So OneDrive doesn't have end to end encryption? Like you mean once it's store in Microsofts servers? I doubt there would be anything to worry about. But yes I agree that Sync is a great option but at this points I know Microsoft will always be around and they have cutting edge security.....right?💁♂️
Nope never used a cloud to store any of my data although I had a mouse that did that so I made sure not to buy that brand again. Why is it many people think if they can't see it it is ok or safe?
Definitely Google, rather than store in a common format we will make it hard if the customer ever wants to leave. Another reason I would NEVER use Google drive.
BEWARE moving Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides from Google Drive and then deleting them from Google Drive; you will lose those files!! Google Drive uses links. What you end up copying are links to nowhere, once you delete the files from Google Drive. NOTE to Apple users: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can open Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, just be sure to save them as native Apple files, or if you prefer, as MS Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
There was a guy that threatened the CDC Chief. Obviously wrong. He used an overseas encrypted email service that duefully complied with the FBI and got arrested. Any idea on which email provider ?
The fact that Google drives take so fucking long on a wave file is pathetic versus a video file which has way more. This is the moment that made me switch.
You didn't say ANYTHING about the types of encryption algorithms supported - so how & why exactly did you select this service ? Is this a channel about "security" for people with zero IT knowledge ?

Why is he using MAC OS on an internet security channel? To communicate with the common man? Maybe I missed a disclaimer way earlier in his channel's history or something?
Security is only as good as the weakest point. Interestingly theory is going round, hackers - if you call them that - hackers are using tools like your trusted proprietary AV scanner as an access point to your windows/mac/linux/google machine, its an interesting theory as these have full access to every part of your machine but there is a moral obligation to have an AV running especially if dealing with third parties.
I'm so tired of Google's BS seriously! Dropbox and OneDrive folders DO NOT DISAPPEAR just because you're not signe in on the internet. Even if you make G folders available offline, you still can't access them if your laptop isn't online.

Thanks! Cryptomator adds some good client-side encryption, which is necessary for Google Drive but redundant for Sync.
Cryptomator is great, but why depend on another layer when many cloud providers offer zero-knowledge encryption?
Don’t use Sync, it’s slow and lacks features! Please look elsewhere.
Thank you! Can I set up a password for each time I open the app on my phone?
Yes, you can set up a passcode on the app.
But Sync Cannot upload folders like Proton Drive.
Very good video🎉 thanks
Welcome 👍
Even though I had protection on my computer, not only was Dropbox hacked, but they scrambled all my files on my computer, as well as duplicated files. I will never use the cloud unless I was a business owner and truly needed employees to share.
Wouldnt I get more or similar from Apple?
Here's what I can't figure out: Google Drive's killer feature (for me) is integration with the Sheets and Docs apps. Those apps work really well. What privacy focused DOCX / XLSX editor do you use once you're in the Sync ecosystem?
Yea, that has been tricky. They integrate with Office 365 if you use that.
@@AllThingsSecured If you're using Office 365, might as well just stay on Google Drive. You'll get no privacy either way.
Have you tried Collabora Office yet? If so and it doesn't work for whatever reason - please let me know and save me some time ha. If not, then I'll give it a test drive and let you know what I think.
The other one I'm planning to look into is onlyoffice; same thing - if you've tried it and it doesn't work, then please let me know
I kinda only pay a for my pictures backups on Google, but i find Office 365 the best
You mentioned you don't like Dropbox. Why is that?
bro you are the geek channel i've been looking for
This is just an 8 minute ad
I did my research, I made my choice and now I'm showing how I made the migration. Not sure what else to do that would please you.
@@AllThingsSecured I would love to see the research. That's actually why I clicked the video, I thought it was going to be about comparing all the different services.
@@TheShubLub I use Syncthing which is great for syncing files from mobile to desktops and servers (even Raspberry PI).
I like NextCloud, but every upgrade ends up being a re-install.
Both NextCloud and SyncThing, you control the security, the encryption, and data at rest.
is there a secure way to send a file to a person so he can download it read it or see it and then it self destructs?
Sort of... you can set expiration links on files you share, but that's for the link only. If they download the file, there's really nothing you can do.
Thank you, Josh!
My pleasure!
Would you please compare the difference between Mega and Sync?
Mega is faster and has more features, use it over Sync.
@AllThingsSecured
What are your thoughts on Boxcryptor
I wish I had know the "take out from google" thing last year when I made the switch ... ;-)
Thanks for the video. I'd like you to test Internxt drive, if possible, as it looks very promising and for me it is a local company 😊
I’ll see what I can do.
Don’t use Sync! It’s slow and lacks features! Please look elsewhere.
@@brien. Your opinion is subjective. How slow is slow? What is your network connection speed? What are you uploading that's so slow? What features is it lacking? I have no complaints.
@@kevinthomas7478 least obvious sync employee
@@brien. Wrong guess, sparky. Not sure why you are incapable of hearing someone else’s opinion.
Syncthing even better! It will not upload your files to their servers at all! You will sync your files just beetween your machines.
Please, compare “NordLocker” vs “Proton Drive”
Proton drive ? Is that still in beta?
I'm not sure if it's out of beta, but I've enjoyed using it for personal use. For sharing files as a business, though, it sucks.
That’s better than Sync (it’s newer, faster, cleaner, and has more features)
Don’t use Sync!
G Drive just lost all of our files on a tv production even after a 3 hour phone call only some files were recovered
Josh, Hope you're alright. What happened with your eye and the bruises?
Ha! Thanks for asking. I got hit with an elbow to the eye while playing basketball. Thankfully no stitches but hopefully it won't look this bad for very long. 😂
Wow... take care Josh.
Please do a video on Cryptomator..
Please review sir, Tresorit based in Switzerland
I've heard of it but never used them before.
"thisisabadpassword"😂 - got my smile for the day - thanks.
My preferences:
Tresorit (Swiss, discussed in comments)
NextCloud (as private as you host it yourself)
Skiff (open-source, 10 GB free)
ProtonDrive (open-source, trustworthy, long history)
You didn't even mention these in the ad?
Спасибо
Most cloud storages are better than sync ngl
Why not NextCloud?
Gotta love the hate from people like Dave 😝
The truth is that I looked at a lot of different companies and decided on Sync.com. There are so many different options that I honestly never considered NextCloud. I'm sure they're good, but I've never tried them.
@@AllThingsSecured The beauty of NextCloud is that you host the server yourself. They also have sync app for Android and Apple devices.
Good Video 😍 😍
I thought about Sync, I have the 5 free GB account, plus added 2 people, but how many server locations do they have? Like to keep copies of you data. I chose OneDrive for a few reasons. No ones gunna hack their servers or have access. Plus they keep you data in 5 different locations across the world. I keep all Mt family photos on my OneDrive and feel secure. So OneDrive doesn't have end to end encryption? Like you mean once it's store in Microsofts servers? I doubt there would be anything to worry about. But yes I agree that Sync is a great option but at this points I know Microsoft will always be around and they have cutting edge security.....right?💁♂️
Only Canada.
Nope never used a cloud to store any of my data although I had a mouse that did that so I made sure not to buy that brand again. Why is it many people think if they can't see it it is ok or safe?
A mouse?
@@devcrom3 😂
Definitely Google, rather than store in a common format we will make it hard if the customer ever wants to leave. Another reason I would NEVER use Google drive.
Yea, those Google docs make it hard to export.
Mega is another great alternative.

Say it ain't so, Josh.
So glad end to end encryption is coming to iCloud.
Agreed!
There was a guy that threatened the CDC Chief. Obviously wrong. He used an overseas encrypted email service that duefully complied with the FBI and got arrested. Any idea on which email provider ?
Possibly ProtonVPN, it fits the bill and is known compromised.
@@userequaltoNull May i ask you for confirmation on this?
...Pigeon Mail?
The fact that Google drives take so fucking long on a wave file is pathetic versus a video file which has way more. This is the moment that made me switch.
You didn't say ANYTHING about the types of encryption algorithms supported - so how & why exactly did you select this service ? Is this a channel about "security" for people with zero IT knowledge ?
Yes. That’s exactly who this is for. I’m not trying to reach people who know the difference between different encryption protocols because, frankly, if you do, you shouldn’t be watching CZcams to get your information anyway.
@@AllThingsSecured I just came across your channel, I should have read the "about" section.....Thanks for the "entertainment" - maybe you could include a disclaimer in case someone takes your advice seriously ?
Why is he using MAC OS on an internet security channel? To communicate with the common man? Maybe I missed a disclaimer way earlier in his channel's history or something?
Yes, if you're the kind of person who uses Linux exclusively and only downloads FOSS projects, then this channel probably isn't for you.
I changed to Sync after drive changed the way it worked.
الا يعلم من خلق ؟
Is he unaware who created the service?? Is he unaware who made the syatem of creating encryption keys??
bro what happened to your eye? get well soon!
😂🤣 I was hoping it wasn’t too noticeable. I got busted in the face playing basketball. Probably gonna have a scar.
please, try cubbit
Is it FOSS?
The web panel is open source. When you're dealing with cloud storage, I don't think there is such thing as "free" and "open source".
Great option if you have a lot of money.
Nice ad.
There are plenty of cloud storage options available, and after doing my research, this is what I chose. After making that decision, I approached Sync.com about sponsoring a video. The result is that you can create a free account and get a 10% discount using this link: www.sync.com/ats
Thank you for providing this video and indeed you did your homework well, I too was looking for a better solution to google drive and you sir found this wonderful service and again thank you.

It’s SO SLOW.
Then you upload a file and it files the latest video in the middle of your stack of 100.
Then smarter you wait a long time for it to upload you try to send or watch it and it says it’s still processing.
I haven’t said this since I was in my 20s but if I met the absolute a-hole who forces me to use this garbage I would slap him.
