Also the illogical reason that it is no longer available of the shelf in the USA. The hydroquinone cream I use is the John Plunketts Superfade Original. The larger size original formula is the same formula as the smaller tube for the face, just more economical. I'm in Australia.

I'm so glad this was a mostly positive review; I LOVE these products! I stick to drugstore brands like LRP and CeraVe, but Faded and Like Butter (the serums -- definitely no interest in the sprays) are the two expensive products that I repeatedly purchase. Faded is to be used very lightly and you have to start slow and work your way up to avoid breakouts, but it has helped by hyperpigmentation by an insane degree. I use the Like Butter just the way you did: I put it on before bed and don't remove it. It makes my extremely dry skin so incredibly soft. I really enjoy both!

I even reached out to the brand to request for a coconut oil free formula but they said it works for majority of customers. I wish brands put in more effort to cater to acne prone skin. Coconut oil is notoriously for causing acne. Especially for someone looking to get rid of dark spots, their faded product was a nightmare. I wish they would reformulate. A more affordable and efficacious "all-in-one" hyperpigmentation product is the Bright & Clear Cream from a brand called touch. ~$20 for 2 oz. and includes niacinamide, azelaic acid, kojic acid and tranexamic acid. I use it on body sites, but it's good for both face and body. Anecdotally, I've seen dramatic improvement of years-old hyperpigmentation between my thighs and private areas and haven't experienced any irritation. It's a cream vehicle so it's also moisturizing to a degree and spreads very nicely, considering.

The Faded serum has helped me tremendously, HOWEVER, I feel like the batches are inconsistent, and the product oxidizes (my guess) over time. With a fresh tube, the smell is somewhat bearable, but as time goes on the smell gets worse. With my latest tube, I noticed a slight fragrance, and the smell wasn’t as bad as it normally is. I haven’t paid attention to the ingredients lately, so perhaps the formula has changed. If I remember correctly, coconut oil has always been an ingredient in the product, but perhaps they experimented with taking it out? Regardless, I still think it’s an effective product from personal experience! It’s a great alternative to a prescription product.

This was so helpful! I have seen them pop up in targeted ads and was curious about their products. This reminded me of a question I’ve been wondering about lately: what are the different coconut-derived ingredients that lean comedogenic and which are the coconut-derived ingredients that are usually refined enough not to trigger the traditional coconut sensitivity? Paula’s Choice lists some versions of coconut-based ingredients as unfairly vilified and not pore-clogging in general but I’m starting to get confused. Cocokind spf has coconut alkanes and that seems to be more traditionally seen as pore-clogging than others (and happened to cause breakouts in my skin). I know ingredient-based recommendations are sort of annoying, but is there like a “safe” list of coconut-derived ingredients vs. ingredients that are more commonly irritating? Just a question I’ve been coming up against as I try to focus on a hydrating mineral spf that does not cause clogged pores.

“Fun in a flare-up” said no one who has a skin condition like eczema. Ages ago, my right hand was so itchy, I torn the skin open rubbing on my jeans while nursing my oldest. I have battled eczema off and on since I was in high school. Flare-ups were usually on my hands but also the inner elbows, small of my back, and lower thighs. And yes, often I couldn’t sleep because of the intense itch/scratch cycle. Since following Dr. Dray, I have been fanatical about keeping my entire body moisturized. That’s my cure. I now use it on my body to not waste product, but I was very underwhelmed. I knew I didn't want the body sprays. That's a lot of money already spent. The faded stunk really bad so apparently they reformulated it. Maybe that's where the confusion about the fragrance is coming from. I have a tube from when they first launched & threw my box out so I can't confirm the ingredients either. I won't be purchasing again.

I've been using Faded for about 5 months now. I'm still on the same tube and I think I have another 7-8 month's worth of product left. I started with weekly application and slowly amped up to daily. At the beginning, my hyperpigmentation from old acne faded considerably and quickly (I'd say about 60% reduction in the 1st 3 months). I do still see improvement, but it's slower now. I will admit that I haven't been as regular as I was before, I've been using it mabe 2-3 times a week in the last 2-3 months. I focus on my problem areas and use a pea size amount everytime. The "egg-like" smell doesn't bother me. I also use it once a day, during my PM routine. I'm grateful I didn't get any sensitivities or breakouts from the formula. However, once I'm done with the tube I don't think I'll be repurchasing (not because of performance, but just because I like trying new products - I'm eyeing Eadem's Dark Spot Serum (a whopping $68!!! :() or Regimen Lab's Level Serum). I do think Faded is well priced, especially considering how long the tube lasts and how effective it is (in my personal experience). My issue with dermatologists in my area is they waste my time. They don't address the issues of melasma, hyperpigmentation (pih), and/or sun damage (age spots) at all. They look at my skin and say everything looks great. I had to bring up the issues and then they said try differin. Not even sure if the otc version is even in the therapeutic range to address my issues. They didn't even bother looking to see that they gave me tretinoin in the past before rushing me out. It is cheaper for me to get a prescription than buying otc.
I feel I have to do all the research myself and test out otc products to make progress or tell them what I want them to do which is what I am looking to them for. Or have skin cancer for them to take any interest.

I got Faded due to the impressive ingredient deck. Seems like it contained all the active ingredients to treat hyperpigmentation. However, I have abandoned using it with about half tube left because 1) the sulfur smell, 2) greasy and slides around, never seems to soak in, 3) didn’t notice much improvement. It is possible they added fragrance now since the earlier version that I got had really strong unpleasant smell that lingers.

I have purchased both cream products and the faded product didn’t do much of anything for my PIH after months of usage with serious Sunscreen application. The Like Butter product was not moisturizing enough either. They just didn’t work for me.

I’m on a skin cycling routine with tretinoin for about 3 months now and it’s been great. But I do want to lighten or remove old acne scars and don’t want to use hydroquinone. I’m considering Faded but I’m not sure where id incorporate it into my routine in a way that would reduce irritation and damage to my skin barrier. Id love your input @drdray.

Thank you for pointing out some of the potential fragrance issues. I haven’t had problems and I’ve been using for a month. I believe one of the founders of the brand has eczema. I did find the spray a bit sticky, but used less and rubbed in more and not experiencing that anymore. It’s already working for the hyperpigmentation on my legs.

Thanks, Dr. Dray, for the informative review. I was interested to try the Faded serum, but now, I am not too sure that I need it.

I noticed that Sephora sells Faded with the butter if you want the duo. I decided to just go for Faded. I think I will stick with a cheaper moisturizer.

Excited to try this as a “spot treatment” on my few brown spots ive got from picking at pimples on my face. Was also recommended by Dr Alexis here in youtube. I like you both equally for advice.
