0:05 The meme we've seen all around the web. I showed the work order on the top of the video as well to show that it really happened.
0:15 Passenger window slightly open causing the noise the customer heard right after he had the oil changed on his car.
0:31 Since the button on the shifter is pressed in (with the cover on) the vehicle does not think it's in park, so the customer could not remove the key from the ignition. With the pink shifter cover removed the button is not pressed in, allowing the vehicle to be in park and the key removable from the ignition.
0:49 Steering wheel cover sliding on the steering wheel when turning right.
0:58 I've hit steel wheels back into shape with a hammer but with aluminium wheels like the one displayed in the clip, they will most likely crack/break. You could try sending it to a wheel repair shop but most of the time you're better off replacing the wheel.
1:06 If it works it works... That's a first!
1:16 The drain plug could have been easily removed but now it'll be more expensive.
1:30 Take photos or do a quick Google search if you're unsure of the correct routing for a new belt.
1:48 Rear differential housing needed to be replaced. The customer driving in 4x4 will end up causing more damage in the end. Looks like the customer is driving it until the wheels fall off.
1:53 The technician said it sounded like is was talking to him. The noise was from the center support bearing.
2:00 The bill came to over $8000 to have this fixed and the customer had just bought this vehicle not too long ago.
2:19 No electrical issues (that they know of), but looks like there might be! Has a ton of modifications to the truck to hunt for big foot.
2:07 Raw bacon or snake skin? Also, wear gloves when dealing with fuel!
2:47 The lower bolt on the brake caliper was missing causing the brake caliper to rub the inside of the wheel.
2:57 Filmed in Serbia. Taxi that just hit 1 million kilometers.
    3:02 Outro. Thanks for watching!

I once worked at an auto parts store and sold a battery for a lawn mower . The customer called back a few hours later and yelled and screamed at me for selling him a defective battery . I apologized and asked him to return it for a full refund . Some time later he entered our store and slammed the battery on the counter and began to yell at me again . I looked down at the battery , removed the two plastic covers from the posts and said it should work now . Without a word he picked up the battery and left our store . The craziest part was that he had actually drilled holes through the sides of the caps so he could connect the battery cables .

I needed two additional signatures and couldn't get a hold of him for over a month, but when he finally called back, he was furious with me because, "for the past week the car has been squealing and buzzing and the noise is so loud my wife can't even stand to drive it anymore and it's ridiculous your service department can't even schedule me until 1 month from now!" I tried to walk him through some typical issues like closing all the air vents, having a window cracked slightly on the road, etc., etc.... and finally asked him to drive over that day for us to at least take a listen.

    • @PGspeed88
      @PGspeed88 Před 4 měsíci +19

In some cases, yes, but not always.
My recent example was a 2019 Jeep Compass. Especially when stopped, the steering wheel clicked when it first moved left or right. It was loud and haptic.
Nothing looked out of the ordinary under the vehicle that I could find. The next step for me would have been taking apart the steering column. If nothing there fixed it, I didn't know where else to check and would have taken it to somebody, even just to have them tell me what needed replaced.
Luckily, a very small group of people online had the same problem and one guy posted of video of the problem that was identical to mine.
The culprit? The steering rack needed some more grease. His was bone dry. Mine had what looked like plenty of grease on both ends, but slathering more on made the noise disappear and months later it is still gone.
That simple repair required me to remove a special, single use clamp over the rack boot that I would not have wanted to remove if I didn't have a reason to. The sound didn't even seem to come from there.

No not really. I had a diesel shop quote me $2500 to replace my lifter pump. They said they couldn't get to it without pulling the engine.
I walked to the auto parts store and bought a gasket scraper and a new lifter pump for $35 , then I removed my passenger side wheel well and cut the wheel all the way to the right. It took me about an hour in a parking lot to replace (with borrowed tools as I was 150 miles from home. Never had another problem for the next 3 years I owned the truck before selling it.
Funny thing is, that was the first time in my whole life that I've taken my car to a shop, because I was finally making enough money that I could afford to, just for some dickhead to try and rip me off.

An ex boyfriend story: I grew up in the late 1960's and early 1970's fixing cars with my dad and rebuilding engines at the local high school auto shop class. I served 5 years in the US Navy as a Machinist Mate in a steam engine-room - which is a heavy mechanics job as you are always fixing and rebuilding stuff. Then I pursued a Mechanical Engineering Degree as I had dreams of being more than a mechanic or operator in a power plant. Upon Graduation in 1985 I purchased a 2 year old used 1983 Ford Escort GT and then purchased the full set of maintenance manuals so I could do my own work.
Key to this story is this engine was an interference engine with a timing belt that needed to be changed regularly (they did not last as long as current belts). For those that know the history of the Escort engines (cast iron block, aluminum head). The GT engine had the robust head that didn't crack - and Ford changed all the production engines for Escorts to that head I think by late 1984 (without the performance camshaft for non-GT cars). Ford replaced a lot of heads on a lot of Escort engines in those days as they often cracked within a few years of ownership.
One day one of the "hot" mechanics at the power plant asked me what I did over the weekend and I replied that I changed the valve seals, installed a new camshaft and lifters, and replaced the timing belt on Saturday (and that did not even take a full day - and went somewhere Saturday evening). He then asked me about changing the timing belt as his girlfriend had a Escort and needed that done. I told him that it was not that hard if he had the right metric wrenches and sockets (and told him the sizes I used), and to be sure to properly line up the "timing" marks when you put the new belt on (I explained what they were and how they had to be lined up). He said that he understood and was off to Sears to buy a full set of Craftsman's metric wrenches and sockets (those are actually high quality tools even if they don't have the finish of Snap-on - Note that I own a set of Snap-on metric deep offset box end wrenches that I purchased to work on that Escort GT).
He came in to work after the next weekend devastated. He forgot to line up the timing marks - and pistons hit valves. His GF demanded that he pay for a new Ford engine and dealer installation, and a rental car until her car was fixed. Then dumped him when she got her car back after he paid for everything. I never heard of him fixing cars again, while I fixed cars for a number of people (even some of the plant staff). I no longer much work on my cars (now in the mid 60's and am not as flexible and robust as I used to be). Changing filters, light bulbs and oil are about all I do now for both me and my wife's car. I sold someone my drum brake tools several decades ago.

My cousin had an 87 with over 300k miles. The drivetrain outlived the chassis. Rear struts punched throttle towers from rust (salt belt). Ford messed up in the mid 90’s to early 2k’s. Changed the head design and they started dropping valve seats.

@@kd7cwg I got that car at about 60,000 miles from a "on the road" salesmen. Of course a problem in those days was that seal materials just did not last, which is why I had to change the valve seals and had a hydraulic lifter that wasn't working properly. The Auto parts store actually offered me the "original Factory OEM" seals and parts or aftermarket parts with new seal materials (at a modest cost increase). I took the new seal materials which lasted me for the rest of the life of that car.
About a year later I paid a mechanic to drop the crankshaft and replace the main engine crankshaft seals as they were leaking badly (the car had a manual transmission), again with new seal materials vs the original. That job is best done with a car lift which I did not have and I did not want the misery of doing it laying on the floor.
I drove that car until above 275,000 miles when all kinds of other non-engine non transmission things started to go wrong on it that were costly to repair, and I could see the cost escalating a lot if I kept the car with further degradation.
I do believe that somewhere in there I paid a transmission shop to replace my clutch, and tire shops replaced tie rod ends multiple times (which was required in those days). I believe that I did all other work on the car for the 200,000 + miles over decade (or so) that I owned it. I traded it (very little value) for a 1995 Aspire with only 4000 miles on it - and drove that for over 250,000 miles as well with just normal wear part maintenance and filter and oil changes.
My current 2009 Hyundai Sonata, which I purchased new, has over 300,000 miles on it and everything appears to be in great shape (I did have to replace the muffler this year as the welded seams corroded through after 14 1/2 years). As mentioned in my original post I no longer do much maintenance work myself other than light bulbs, filters, and most oil changes. Other than that only routine brakes, tires, etc with a replacement suspension about 4 years ago. Only 1 replacement set of tie rod ends so far (they last a lot longer now). Of course I run synthetic oils in my cars since Mobile 1 came out.
Interestingly, the 1983 Escort had a extra slippery colloidal suspension of graphite particle oil which the salesman used when I got it which I continued until Mobile 1 came out. That oil was black as the ace of spades right out of the bottle - but worked very well as evidenced by the like new condition of the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings when we dropped the crankshafts to replace the main engine seals with about 100,000 miles on it, with the original Teflon lining patches in the bearings still there - the mechanic was totally shocked as he had never seen such good bearings in a well used car engine - and became a believer in enhanced slippery oils that day.
Have a great day - and may all the good and honest mechanics keep up the good work.

@mclarenscca, there are surprisingly many videos about people who've had cars tripping 500,000 and even over 1,000,000 miles! Amazing to hear some stories about how many batteries and other parts they've bought, the number of oil changes etc. I'd be interested to see how many "newer" vehicles can hit half a million to a million+ miles & compare the costs of "maintenance/repairs" with those of older style engines from the 80's, 90's and into 2000. I mean some of "newer" these vehicles experience serious engine/drivability problems leading up to 100,000 miles and certainly beyond that. If they're not needing major engine work, then some of them require cleaning of valves and other components because of the "direct injection" design. I hated the idea that suddenly they began putting the "water pump" behind the timing cover and run it off of the belt/chain and when the bearings wear in the pump, it dumps water right into the oil pan below.... What an absolute stupid design when for decades the water pump remained external to the timing components and at most your coolant just gets dumped on the ground, clearly indicating a pump failure rather than potentially ruining your engine by dumping coolant into the oil pan. Designs that are just beyond stupid.

I did the battery cap thing just a few days ago, but I figured it out right away when I tried to unlock the doors with the key fob. It was the negative post with a black cap. I just forgot to remove it like I did with the red positive post just before. In my defense, the black cap was hard to see in the light I was working with.

I was at a gas station when this other guys car would not start. It was a
rental BUT, the rental office was 150miles away. So, being the good guy
that I am, I offered to give him a jump so he could be on his way.
FORTUNEATELY, he was looking away when I connected my cables
BACKWARDS and he didnt see the sparks. I reversed my cables & it
cranked, but, it would not start. I knew I had popped his ECM. I told him
it was something more & he called his rental co & they send out a spare
    car for him.

Back in 2004 Canadian Tire used to boost your car if it wouldn't start and if it was in their parking lot. Now they don't because of liability such as killing a PCM. I get sent out into the lot to boost this guy's Ford Escort. I hook up the booster pack. He unhooks it and reverses it because his ground cable is red, the red clamp goes to the red cable, and I'm stupid. It still wouldn't crank. I told him I'd get another booster pack and walked away.
