Fixing a Dell Latitude E7440 that won't start

  • Dell Latitude E7440 won't start, just a black screen, for some reason instead of informing the user that CMOS / Clock battery is dead the machine just silently refuses to start. Here is how to rectify that even if you don't have access to the original replacement part.

Thank you so much for this invaluable video! It would never occur to me that the system was no longer powering up because a 30cent CMOS battery was dead. Sure enough I had the exact same result as you show in the video. I used a small amount of metal tape to secure the tabs and then tightly wrapped the entire battery in electrical tape. Now the system is back to normal. Cheers!
Dell has deliberately designed this as essentially a time bomb as most users would go out and buy another laptop after the 5-10 years that the battery would last. In 30 years of being a technician every other system I have come across with a dead battery would simply boot to a BIOS message informing you that the date and time is not set. This is a flag that either the CMOS battery is dead or that the BIOS values have been reset. Dell should be ashamed for blatantly disrespecting customers and causing untold quantities of working notebooks being thrown away. I am disgusted by this intentional sabotage.

Hey sir - this fixed my problem. I'd like to send you a beer or a coffee as thanks - let me know how please? Very clear and simple guide. What a terrible build from Dell where it does this instead of giving an error message that there is a battery fault. Very poor that there is not a low cost battery holder internally also.... your fix was great though and I have a working laptop now.

      latitude E7440 doesn't power on
I face this issue after updating bios with 28A latest update available at dell support and not turning on , by all the steps suggested in your video
      - remove battery ,all peripherals , power cable and BIOS battery
      - then plug the power cable and click power button 3times
      - it shows power light for 15 seconds and then battery led for 2 seconds

Thanks for the great video. Worked like a charm. Laptop turned on instantly after removing faulty cmos battery. Prolly wont replace the cmos battery though. Will just continue using it without the cmos battery.

You will probably get network problems if you don't have the CMOS clock battery as networking is clock dependent.

Thank you so much for this video. I subscribed your channel and gave a thumbs up. For my Dell E7440, I can not power it on, and when I plug the laptop to an AC Adapter, the "power on" indicator on the AC Adapter will just turn off. It seems that somehow there is a short circuit inside of the laptop. I don't think there were any water spill or water damage happened for this laptop. For this model and such symptom, what are the most possible cause for this issue, and can I do DIY repair? Thanks!

My dell e7440 screen doesn't lit up all the cooling fan and all things lit up except the screen. I have to press the power button multiple times and after several attempts, the screen turns on. Any possible solution for this?
