when I first saw "are you being served?" I was clinically depressed in high school, & missed half my 9th grade yr bc of that. i would watch this show on PBS every night, & this was the ONLY thing that brought something close to a smile on my face, & eventually laughter followed. I was so fascinated by Mrs. Slocombe's different colored hair. To this day, I am thinking for this show helping to pull me out of the dark depths of depression. I continue to love this show to this day.

I used to dress the sets for this show back in the early 70s. I worked on the pilot and the first 2 series. The show was based on Simpson's of Piccadilly department store. One of the writers had worked at the department store. I worked as a window dresser at Simpson's. We were approached to dress the set because they wanted the set to look authentic.

There is nothing subtle about the humour in this programme. It was crude all the way through, and today we merely state what people were thinking when watching this. An excellent programme which I thoroughly enjoyed, but to suggest it is subtle is truly bizarre.

@@kingy002 Yeah. The humor was flat out. I mean some suggestions were subtle...but for the most part most viewers caught on quick. And many times the characters were our right cruel to each other with the name calling and attacks on looks. All for fun though for script.

I worked in retail (Sears) for 35 yrs and discovered "Are you being served" in the mid 80's. I can't tell how many times I have watched every episode lol 😂 😆 Although we didn't do the things they do in this show I can relate to all they do and say. I was also fortunate enough to actually meet John Inman in person in Virginia Beach, VA when he did a book signing. There are a few decent post-Lucas (Trevor Bannister) episodes, but despite the strong performances from the rest of the cast it was clear that they were out of ideas. I think It is more than just the change of cast---I think Bannister left because the show was sliding downhill. When they brought in Mike Berry as Mr. Spooner, they had him play the part in a more negative light; while Lucas was sarcastic and witty with Mrs. Slocombe---sometimes going too far--Spooner was just plain mean.
With the arrival of Spooner and Old Mr. Grace for the 1981 season, in many ways they should have ended it there. There are still some good episodes in the last few seasons, but they now become the exception rather than the rule.

I don't think Peacock would do that by implying she's 550 years old because that age is just ridiculous. It's much more insulting to imply she's 20 years older than she is, by referring to WW1 instead of the war she means, WW2. It was common to refer to WW1 as the 14-18 war. In addition, precisely how much of the audience, lower class and lower and middle-middle class, do you think would know of a short war in 1418? They would have thought he was pulling a date out of the air.
