How To Feed An Orphaned Baby Bird - by Mike Franzman

  • This video shows you HOW to feed a baby bird, WHAT food to feed a baby bird, and WHEN to feed the baby bird---- meaning, under which circumstance. Normally, baby birds should be raised by their parent birds only, without any human intervention. We should only intervene, when there is no adult bird around to feed the baby bird. I also recommend using the internet to find a local bird rehabber, who can take on the job for you, if need be. Baby birds should only be fed by you, when is no other alternative, and if it is an urgent situation (baby bird in danger of being attacked by cats, dogs, or other predators, parent birds MIA, baby is starving, etc).
This video was created to answer my most frequent "Bird Whisperer" questions, so I am sharing my experiences, research, and knowledge gained from Bird Rehab and Animal Rescue websites.
Narrated, Photographed, and Edited by Mike Franzman.
Good Luck In All Your Rescue Efforts!

Thank you. This has been so helpful. Parent to a 3 days old Tailor bird today. The nest got destroyed by some predator. This one dropped on a clump of grass and survived.

Hi Mike, I watched all your previous bird rescuing videos and I really liked them. I'm glad you did this information video. If you still rescuing please film it. You have such a good hand with birds and I like your calm present and nice voice.

We really enjoyed your videos on saving the baby starling, they were very helpful since last mon the we found a baby starling and started taking care of him. It’s been over a month and although we spend the days with him outside he still chooses to stay with us. It would be great if you would make a video on taking care of adult wild birds, if you’ve ever done it. Great job anyway, you really helped us!

Unfortunately the little baby died. I was not prepared for this and the little baby was far too young. Needed its mother or someone skilled in caring for him. I watched internet videos but still, with no experience I was sorely lacking. I kept him alive for four days. He was the size of my little finger. Sweetest little guy. I was so sad for a week. @@Icarus-k9y

Very helpful video. I was doing maintenance on my tractor and found a nest near the radiator with 4 sparrows in it. I ran the tractor yesterday so I suspect the mother is long gone. They have their mouth open and are hungry. Looks like some egg and moist cat food is on the menu for them tonight.

I’ve been feeding my nestling almost fledgling. Exact hand feeding formula with a Syringe and. Mealies and crickets drowned in water cut in half and sometimes I mix the chopped bugs in the leftover formula after sucking it up in the syringe. I alternate between formula bites and bug bites

I just saved a baby bird from a cat, but the mama was out there I don’t want to leave him out there tonight so I put him in a box with grass. I feel so bad for the mama now. Will the parents take care of it tomorrow?

I'm about to save some babies soon. Nest is on my front door's wreath. I'll wait more but they just hatched the other day. Idk where the mom is, probably because the nest is on my front door...

Thank you! I was losing my mind and also up against time. My sparrows throw their babies out every freaking year! I’ve found 5 dead so far on my back porch this year but today one was still alive. Eyes not open. No feathers. It’s killing me.

How did your baby do? I've got 3 orphaned or abandoned babies right now and I'm so worried they won't be okay. So far so good but they are just so teeny and fragile

Seriously had a sparrow do the same thing. Tossed the babies out twice. 3of 4 died the second time. Been 24 hours and he/she still kicking. Boiled egg and dog food. My first time. No rehabilitation remotely close. I don't know what I'm doing. Been reading a lot the past two days. It's so small hard to tell if it's crops full. Trying not to handle it much. Omg this thing craps a lot! Replacing the paper towel very regularly after one or two poops. Have a heat lamp over it cause we keep our house pretty cool. Adjusting it's height based on what the birds doing.
If I weren't retired I couldn't do this. Very high demand.

@@jcjc9155 my little guy didn’t make it. I think I must have found it too late. Was already too far gone. I like to think I at least provided love and comfort in the end.

@@T_Barb mines doing great so far. Dog food and hard boiled egg atm mashed up with a spoon. I dont have a mortar and pestle. Im going to read up on scrambled egg. seems like it would be easier to digest. If it makes it ill set up a bird cage and when it gets flight feathers set it out side with food and water and let it come and go as it pleases i guess? No idea what i am doing but seems to be working so far. Kinda nice to pick up some knowledge and learn how to tend to wildlife in need. I was relying on rehabilitators for bunnies or birds and those guys in my state are like 3 hours plus away. Which is odd given that theres a massive bird preserve just 20 minutes away that spans several counties. But they are more geared towards water type birds. I dont think anyone rehabilitates house sparrows so ive learned either.
