    I truly love the acrylic chipping technique. These boxes came out great!

    Hey man! May be cool to add a couple of those push release spring latches like what you'd see in an old entertainment center to eject the drawers a bit with just a simple push on the front. Clearly handles or pulls wouldn't be ide but these would be invisible and should work great!

    That is awesome!!! I've been thinking about making a bigger version in the classic navy blue as my nerd cave side table with actual storage. They turned out SO good!!

    Thanks for this. 😎 The flex on that long mill bit is extreme. Seems it should be 1/3 of that length to stop any breaking/snapping of bits.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před 2 lety +1

      Surprisingly not much flex that I could see, but because I needed to cut through the material it had to be a bit further out of the collet.

    I want to give you a little tip, (if you don't know it already). If you don't have to cut very deep in the milling operation (like in this case), use a shorter Milling Bit or push it further in the Chuck. The further you pull the milling bit out of the Chuck the more it can flex in the milling operation which can lead to inclines on the cutting edges and to imprecise contours.
    Nonetheless an excellent result of your build!

    I love the project, but also that xcarve. The time it takes to cut exact items seems to be the gift of time saved doing it in traditional ways

    I don't have a laser cutter, but I think that carving pink Insulation foam may work. I plan on doing a Star Wars Halloween yard theme this year. These would be great "background filler" props with some tubing laying around.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před 2 lety

      You could also layer pieces to give it depth, rather than carving into it.

    Cool build! How did you pick up your skillsets? Are you self-taught, did you work at a studio? Just curious.

    Nice work, once again. Quick question, when do you decide to use liquid latex as a masking for chipping/weathering versus toothpaste that I have seen in other videos? Is it finish dependent or time related? Just curious. Thanks for sharing.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před 2 lety

      It’s less messy. The latex doesn’t smear across the object like toothpaste does.

  • @JC-ms2rz

    Why would you not just paint on silver splotches instead of using the latex masking and painting the entire thing silver then covering 98% of all that sliver paint?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před 2 lety

      For realism sake. You could absolutely do it the way you described though.

    • @JC-ms2rz
      @JC-ms2rz Před 2 lety

      @@VanOaksProps That is what I mean, they both look exactly the same. Painting on silver or painting on masking is still the same painted on splotch. Unless you mean the paint LIFTS up a little on the edges as you pull the masking off giving the torn paint a 3rd dimension? When ever I use liquid masking I get a clean edge myself so maybe I am not aware of some trick for this.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před 2 lety

      @@JC-ms2rz That's not completely true. By applying the base metal, liquid latex, and top coat you're also getting texture and dimensionality created by removing the latex and exposing the base metallic paint. By just applying the metal paint on top, you don't get the added dimension.
      There's a time and place for both techniques, and both have value, this was just an opportunity to share this particular approach.
