About This Video: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in kids. They happen when bacteria (germs) get into the bladder or kidneys. A baby with a UTI may have a fever, throw up, or be fussy. Older kids may have a fever, have pain when peeing, need to pee a lot, or have lower belly pain.
Many of you may not be familiar with the urinary tract. Basically, a person's blood travels through two kidneys, down the ureters into their bladder, where they store and eliminate urine.
The bacteria from the colon travel up into the urethra and bladder to cause a urinary tract infection in a little girl. That's why urinary tract infections occur.
Symptoms of fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and flank pain can indicate a serious kidney infection which can require imaging tests, such as a renal ultrasound or a voiding cystourethrogram, to assess why the child could have this more severe infection.
It's important though, if you experience any new bladder symptoms, to see your pediatrician as soon as possible.
