Nothing wrong with a stick you found, used many over the years and likely will again. However, I like the adjustable aspect and comfortable handle of poles and the different ootions of holding them. Never used $100 poles but have used some from dollar stores and others from MEC and they work just fine.
Can get a pair of trekking poles for less than 100 dollars fairly easily. They are a lot lighter than a walking stick and more portable. Find trekking poles take a lot less energy to utilize with the low weight. To each their own though.
