  • On May 23, 2019, the Sebastian Inlet District marked its centennial with the release of this historical video. The Sebastian Inlet District was created exactly 100 years to the day in 1919 by special act of the Florida State Legislature, and chartered to maintain the navigational channel between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River. The inlet is one of only five navigable channels that connect the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. Learn more at www.sitd.us.

Sebastian Inlet would have been worth even more had they not extend the north jetty in a way that completely destroyed Sebastian Inlet’s former ability to consistently produce some of the best waves to surf on the eastern coast of the US. The pillar of what made Sebastian Inlet a recreational haven for surfing, the beloved A-frame powerful, fast, often hollow wedge shaped waves of 1st & 2nd peak that made Sebastian Inlet so special, along with it being one of only spots able to produce fun rideable surf when everywhere else is flat as a lake... has all been lost & gone since the north jetty’s restoration/expansion.

We certainly understand the disappointment in losing a beloved peak, but the main function of the north jetty is as a navigational aid. The restoration of the jetty was done with the mission of safety in navigation, as required by our charter. There are still some good waves near the inlet!

Yes! Thee Army Corps of Engineers ruined thousands of years of Mother Nature's Blessing. Destroyed it by man's arrogance to think they could make it better.

I heard form my family who have lived here for decades that they hired a guy for $250,000 to extend the jetty without ruining the waves. Well long story short he ended up making a module out of popsicle sticks, put it IN HIS BATHTUB and dropped small stones to see how they curved around the module of the jetty. FOR $250,000! No wonder it was a bust.

You don't understand the effects. You had the best surfer of all time groomed on that wave plus other world champs like Hobgood, Zamba and Lisa Anderson. Think about the other generation of world champs and WCT level surfers and surf tourism that could have been had you left the inlet be.@ianinletdistrict7869

So glad to have seen 🌊 what was lost to progress, back in 1972. Yes, Before leashes were invented! A Great unusual wave, that will be very hard to describe to those who have never seen it? or 🏄 it! A good Story cause it's True History. 🤙

Before the Jetties restoration project. Sebastian Inlet was similar to "The wedge" in California. On a Big Swell, It was like a Gigantic Tongue that would pitch out and create a tubular ride primarily to the right, 400' from the Bch. or more? Unfortunately you Young Turks will never know how it was. By removing the sand and then replacing it. Destroyed the bottom, Mother Nature's Gift!

Boaters did not destroy the sea grass , run off and other pollutants are the culprit
