That tip system usually ends up with the company keeping the tip, nothing passed on to the employee, I would rather leave a cash tip

Hi Ana, tips are a good thing but not if you have to ask for it. We where in Benidorm during the winter but before we went to a restaurant for the first time I searched internet what is custom in Spain with regard to tips. As you said, 5-10% is custom but not obligatory. I doesn't feel good if I have the feeling I must tip. In Holland we also give tips when we are satisfied with the service and the food. Most times tips are collected and divided equily under de staff. Not only the ones that serve the drinks or food. It's joint effort to satisfy the customer. I wonder how this goes in Spain.
My advice would be; do not ask for a tip it's not good for your own value. People who want to tip will do it any way.

I think the tip system it’s good as when big group is eating In a restaurant you can end up leaving too much of a tip in my opinion … not sure if they need to explain this to the customer tho as could be uncomfortable both both parties . In uk they put on 10% surcharge as an option and most pay it unless it’s been terrible 😂

Tips are not good if forced. If i get good food and service i have left up to 40percent but on aveerage in benidorm i have to be honest not had this problem .i have not had many decent meals and the waiter has lost out because of the poor meal. I go half board now to avoid this
Very useful thanks people should never ever bank transfer (Always sets alarms of when asked ) always use credit card or bank card , then you will be covered to get money back. x
