- This video is from the syndicated TV series "Amazing America" and tries to explain the SCA and the Pennsic War. Unfortunately, the commentary by host Kevin Nealon is cringe-worthy, as he finds a way to belittle or make fun of the SCA at every opportunity.
Still, even bad press is good press. I'll let you be the judge whether these 9 minutes are a net positive or not. The video quality is awful - it's at least two VCR generations removed from the original.
This was my first Pennsic!
The old adage about not judging unless you've walked a mile in someone's shoes. Put Nealon in some armor and give him sword and shield. Then put him in the Field Battle. I'm SURE he'd do well!

That was one of the few that I've made it to (#10 was the first, 42 the most recent). I still have that tunic. And hairline.
Also wrong about numbers. London in 1600 had a population of 200,000.

To Mr. Kevin Nealon You think that their Armor is Made of Cardboard? The Swords may Not be Steel, but they don't Kill You. Some People don't like to get Accidentally Stabbed with a Real Sword. So We Use Rattan Swords. The Same Rattan that's Used in Martial Arts Stick Fighting. Tell You what "Mr. Nealon" how about You put on some SCA Armor, grab An SCA Sword & Shield & Go into the Battle & See how Long You Last. You'd be a Gonner in 5 Seconds after the sound of the Horn.
It's rattan, not bamboo. Bamboo is hollow and leaves an edge when it breaks, while rattan is solid and just leaves fibres when it breaks. Other than that, I totally agree that Keven Nealon is a no talent piece of trash.
@@Ziggy_Moonglow Oh yeah i get those mixed up sometimes. Thank You for catching that, I don't care if it was Bamboo or Rattan i wouldn't want to be hit by either one in Cardboard Armor, but hey in this day and Age i wouldn't be surprised to see someone stupid to do it.
There have been quite a few comments about Pennsic. Some people like it, others do not. Whether or not the place is true to its origins, I have an interest in attending because I live one hour south and I've been visiting Moraine State Park and McConnells Mill State Park for years. I visit Moraine State Park about five times a year and McConnells Mill a few times. I was at McConnells Mill for a Civil War reenactment once and I liked it. I also got to see a boat festival at Moraine State Park and it was very fun. I actually have driven by the castle compound a few times, once when I was a child. The other was recent to eat at a restaurant. I'd always assumed it was a recreation center but nothing too special. Maybe an abandoned film set? I live one hour south and bearly noticed all the excitement. My aunt once showed me Penssic on the web but we were confused and confused it with a (or, Napoleonic) festival somewhere near Philidephia and never made the trip. Now that I'd learnt that this place is so close, I will attend it and enjoy living in the Middle Ages. I will be dressing as a Norman Knight from 1066 (Hastings). I look forward to "battling" yunz there.
I don't know about what things that some People here have said is Criminal, but I've been to lots of SCA Events & Have Never Seen anything out of Line. Go to Pennsic Try Out Armored Fighting, get involved in the Groups & Decide for Yourself, but I will say this. Show Me 1 Organization that knows Every Single Person in the Organization & Know whether they are a Freak Or Not. Some say there were things in the News Media. Don't know if You've Noticed Lately, but the News Media doesn't Always tell the Truth.

If you have been a member that long, then you know how much it has changed, and you have seen the event change. Probably some "peer" who is offended that the truth is getting out. I too was a member for several years till i saw the crap going on. Ive worked security, ive been to the classic, ive partied at the best places till i saw what it truly was. I know what i am talking about when i say this. Some of the parties are actually quite excellent, but i dont even know if 3 skulls has their parties anymore since its been a few years.

No, i am not lying. I will say it still rings true that when someone tries to shine light on the bad side of the SCA (which is growing) someone will attempt to smeer the other person's reputation by calling names. Im sorry, but im saying what i have seen, and if i must, i will list start listing events that have made the news. The SCA isnt what it once was. i wish it was like the old days. Chivalry has now been turned into a weapon to be used against those without white belts, Crown tourneys are now a contest of who can take more hits, not a contest of SKILL thou some still has some. Granted, im mainly talking about EK, and Pennsic. Other kingdoms might be a hell of a lot better

Pennsic is still only two weeks JaredThinks...Peace week is the first week, and War week is the second week. I have attended since Pennsic 29. Hope you have a great time when you are able to join us :)

I hope I can make it in 2017, but the next year just became very busy. I hope to come as soon as possible. I was initially going to join the SCA first week of June, at my local barony (there's two baronies right next to each other in my area, I could really go to either), but plans changed and I'll be moving, so I will be holding off on joining until later unfortunately. :(

And Germany looking for a better life. I am Irish and German, and Scottish and Norse, just because those ancestors liked to fuck Irish and German people, apparently. I've also got some Native American blood, because hey, who can resist a big dude with some war paint, feathers, a bow and arrows and a big cock?
