Download and open in modern browser. I stretch to fit which is close to how it kind of looked since screens weren't so great back then. I recently had to re-upload and make it so you click to play since autoplay doesn't work in modern browsers.
Originally it was created by Canadian art student Deidre LaCarte for geocities in 1998, but grew into a huge internet meme. The site was named after her hamster, Hampton.

The original song is "Whistle Stop" by Roger Miller which was adapted by Disney in "Robin Hood" (the cartoon):

Hampterdance was exploited and turned into the site it is today because of all of us that flooded the site in the 90's. Actually, today's site is kind of interesting:

Omg wikileaks
how did you put that link?
I just showed my 16 year old sister in law this video and she couldn’t fathom how that was the height of internet entertainment when I was a child.
I'm around the same age as your sister and can't fathom how most of what's uploaded on CZcams today is entertaining. I'd much rather have more videos like this
The original site used to make my PC (Windows 95? Netscape?) puff and chuff. Loading the website with its numerous .gifs and the .wav background music usually made it crash, if scrolled downwards.
As a 16 year old, I wasn’t there to witness this, but like, this is amazing. Reminds me of leek spin from my era of the internet

Nooo ! That was until the end of the 80's. In the 90's we could use both ! (At least in Norway, which is a pretty advanced country, it's true).
LEEEEEEROYYYY JEEENKINS!!!!
I remembering bugging my dad as a kid to see the Hamsters Dance, by the end of Dinner the page was half loaded.
It was hard times back then.
Same!!!
maybe because their website is extremely unoptimized and they are spamming like 50+ gifs
Bwahahaha
I'm shocked no one has made a 10 hour loop of this to properly recreate the experience.
I kind of tried to do that the first time I posted this: czcams.com/video/Q6TzAQXVpB8/video.html
. The problem most people have is that it's owned by a company that still runs that sight (yes, it is a clip from a Disney film, yes it was Roger Miller, yes a college student originally put the sight together). People have tried posting this but get yanked due to not properly getting permission and linking them. I'm still not sure how I'm the only person that had this for so long. Maybe they no longer grant permission.
There is a 10 hour one....

Leaving this comment for my son to see later when this is part of his history homework. Hi sweetie! Momma loves you!
Hello son
Hey pumpkin, don't listen to your mom, daddy loves you too.❤
Hey son 👋
I wish you were my mom lol 😭😂
I am teaching my kid the best of internet history right this moment.
This is what used to pass for entertainment on the internet kids.
It hasn't really changed that much has it
deharleyva Apparently you never met USENET.
I know
@Cool Breeze there's no video like that your just finding a way to bash the modern internet
it still does.
Thank you so much for putting this up. 20 years ago, my little 2 year old girl would come a running every single time she heard this melody. She danced like crazy. Just got down and hamstered it up. This has brought back such fond memories for me, as my little girl is all grown. Sniff. I just dont wanna quit being the hamster dad. thanx again
Hamster Dad forever!
277 dislikes are from people that have had this song stuck in their heads for 20+ years.
Also people that didn't grow up around that time and don't thinkuch of it. I don't blame them nostalgia is a powerful thing. Oh, and people that wanted a longer loop. I have a longer one, but it's crappier quality.
If this image and song mean anything to you you're starting to get old.
But for what it's worth I'm right there with you.
it's so bizarre that this was among one of the first examples of a widespread meme on the internet
Though you may have passed from this world, you will always live on in our hearts and minds.
The greatest memes never die, they just sleep.
It's an older meme, sir, but it checks out.
Pic or it doesn't count as a meme lol
I was about to clear them...
who noticed the brain at the end
This is the first meme. Out of all of them.
One meme to rule them all, One meme to find them, ... One meme to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
"Well, you'd log onto your AOL...and you would go to this website, see? They called it "Hamster Dance." And a few of the hamsters? They'd spin around in circles....and some other hamsters, they;d be bobbin' up and down. And then, there were these other, real chipmunky-lookin' hamsters...and them? Well, they'd just ruuuun in place!"
"Oooook, whatever you say, Grampa..."
But first you had to wait for the modem...
and not be on the phone
23 years later this is still hella entertaining
When I was a kid, Dad would put this on his laptop, and I'd be entertained. How times have changed. #Nostalgia
Laptop???
@@sayrock6343 Was just about to say the same! Haha! Granted laptops came to the homes in the 1980's -ish. But still... Then again, I returned to WoW a few months ago and I was called old... I have never felt old until then. Haha!
Leaving this here for future kiddos studying this. Hello from 2021!
It's the giggle at the end of each go round that makes this one the best of all hamster dance versions!
Well, it's the original. Definitely better than the awful song that came out of this.
@@applescruff1969 that song rocks
The giggle is what made me want to leave the page open all day 😅
It's Roger Miller's song "Whistle Stop" sampled and sped up.
I was just a kid when I first saw this. My dad (who was a scientist) had used dial-up internet for as long as I could remember for answering emails. Then, one day, he showed me this clip and told me "this is going to change the world as we know it." I never got what he meant until a decade later, when I first saw CZcams videos, I realized it was all stuff like this that made the world we live in possible!
1997 site > 2017 site
Can't argue with that. I mostly put that so they wouldn't pull what I have. They went through all of the hampsterdance songs on youtube at one time and told them all to take it down. I asked for permission, which they gave at the time. That was nice of them and I do appreciate it, but I still like the old archived site better.

Me too! Class of 98 lol
I remember when my grandma would pull up this site on her computer every time my sister and I visited and we thought it was the funniest thing in the world. I remember when the librarians would yell at my sister and I for watching this without headphones and we didn’t quite understand why they were so being so mean to us. I remember it just like yesterday. Ah, the eternal Hampster Dance. This song will be echoing through the far reaches of space long after humanity is no more.
This is the ancestor of all memes.
I loved this when I was little and now my son does ! And he just pointed out something I didn't even realize....the song is from Robin Hood (Disney), even the laugh !!!!
Before there were viral videos, there were viral webpages. This is a classic!
This was in everyone's mailbox back in the days of AOL....
The last time I Heard this was via MSN Messenger...i thought It was Lost Forever...this Is the original version...glad to Heart that again
Rip msn messenger 💔
This is literally one of the first things on the internet to ever go viral. I still remember it 🤣🤣🤣
This takes me back! I was a Sophomore in Highschool when this site came out. The future seemed so bright back then. This website gave me hope.
I loved this. It brought back so many memories, thanks!
I've always wondered if the original Hamster Dance carried a copyright with any actionable weight, though. It's just a sped up loop sampled from a song in Disney's Robin Hood movie. Who knows, if you challenged the content id claim on the grounds that they never owned it to begin with, you might stand a chance. Just random musings, though. I'm not a lawyer.
I wouldn't take that chance. They did but rights off of the singer's estate even though Disney also had right. Unsure how that'd work out in court. The site was down last I checked. I wonder if it'll change hands and they'll make me remove this.
got this attached in an email in the early 2000's, changed my life for the better
Cool. I'm glad I posted it to CZcams. Seemed like a lot of people couldn't find it.
Unlike the 5000 scam emails.
I remember my mother proudly showing this to me when I was 10 on a WebTv. It’s amazing how a quirky tune can transport you back through time.
Hahahaha webtv. That's a blast from the past.
This should play during the credits when the world ends
This is creepy if you picture or imagine it in your mind! I kept on repeating this vid in a loop for 10 minutes straight! 😂💀

A sort of later version of the end of "Dr. Strangelove", you mean. Yes!
Absolutely loved this in 1997, when we were so easily amused. Still love it better than new versions.
I've seen things you...people wouldn't believe. Hamster Dance videos that take an hour to load off the shoulder of AOL. I watched Numa Numa for 10 hours in the dark near the front page of SomethingAwful. All those moments will be lost to time, like tears in the rain. Time to die (A virgin).
Ah, back in a more innocent time for me. Before heart-break. Before facing my own mortality.
I remember my mother used to work a Hewlett-Packard, and they actually had to ban this as the screen saver in the work place because it drove people nuts
I don't blame them. I went mad after hearing the song they made out of this over and over. Lol.
Play this at my funeral or I’m not dying
*hears Baby Shark from 5 year old*
Well you know back in my day...
The song itself is from Disney's Robin Hood... the rooster is singing it in the beginning of the movie. Someone took that snippet, sped it up, and used it for a website full of dancing hamsters. I think the techno song came later. :)
Correct.
HIgh School in the late 90s when my elderly algebra 2 teacher discovered the internet and this site at the same time....
She would play constantly in class and it drove us insane...🤪
Even after all this time 'Hampster Dance' still has me in stitches. Love, love, love it.
This really needs to be like a 30 minute video lol cause that's how it was back in the day
Back in the day it was just gifs and a wav file looping forever. I have another video older than this that loops for 5 hours I think.
This was the first video I watched when we first got the internet in 1990's 😂
Fyi, it wasn't a video back then (but it was hard to know if you didn't build pages at the time). It was gifs and a wav file.
i can't tell you how many times i went to this site as a kid. back when gif files online in html was the most incredible thing on the internet lol
OH MY GOD I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS ALL MY LIFE AFTER I LISTENED TO THIS IN MY CHILDHOOD, AND I FINALLY FOUND IT 😱
I agree, 44 seconds is just the right length of time to fully appreciate this

This is literally how the song and website looked way back then! I remember it like it was yesterday! #nostalgia
It's early 1997. You get home from work, you fire up your compaq presario 133, you crank up the 33.3k Modem, you've got a 6 pack of budlite, your single, in a 1 bedroom apartment and you are off for the weekend... and you find hampster dance and that is your night. Like if this was a night you lived! LOL
Bud light. Hell no! Shiner for me.
I remember my college roommate and I used the song on the answering machine in our dorm. We were easily entertained in the late 90s. :P
Oh my gosh, I used to make my dad play this for me all the time when I was a little kid! I love the hamsters! :)
i don’t know why, but the song has always freaked me out. it always makes me feel like someone is coming for me. i have this distinct but very fuzzy memory of going over to someone’s house when i was about 4 years old to be babysat, she had a computer and showed me stuff on it. i remember that i saw the old 60’s spiderman intro on youtube and got spooked when spiderman gets real close to the screen near the end and very soon after i watched this and it has stuck with me until this day. does anyone else feel like this?
Nostalgia brought me here, the hamsters kept me here.
In the evolution of the WWW this was definitely one of the highlights ! Thanks :)
Yeah, it was one of the first viral sites and rick rolls at the same time.
I love the laugh, it's cute!
Oh my goodness the memories lol

I kinda miss when internet was a precious expensive thing.
My girls were 7 & 8 at the time and they thought this was the funniest thing they had ever seen! Good times!
This song is going to get a lot of traction in the Overwatch community now.
I miss 1997, when the internet was still a baby.
In 1998 I was in school in 4th grade when my teacher played this and projected it in the TV screen from the computer. It became an obsession.
Can't. Stop. Watching.
we've come a long way, baby
hahaha back when this was first out my dad showed it to me once... and I would use the tune to annoy the crap out of my parents. Good times.
I remember seeing this on a 56k modem. I loved it.
The one spinning around with his hands in the air was my favorite
Omg.. I can't believe this was 1997. I was in high school and absolutely addicted to this. I thought it was the cutest thing ever. Especially the spinning one. Memories!!
30 years later. still awesome
@TheWoodsOfWonderland You might say this is one of the first internet memes. It was just a bunch of gifs and a wav file looped. Simple stuff that caught a lot of people's attention at the time.

I made sure to put this as the very first video on the Old Internet playlist. Good times man.
Isn't it the opening theme from Disney's Robin Hood? but high pitched of course..
Le Me ~Savannah x Yes, it's called Whistle Stop and is a song by Roger Miller that was bought by Disney for the Robin Hood cartoon they did.

@djSandgirl that's why I wanted it here. It's amazing how difficult it is to find something that used to be so common.
Over 20 years later and the internet never got any less stupid
I just watched Disney's Robinhood, and discovered the song from the beginning was sped up and used to make the hamster dance song. Am I the last person to realize this?
I get this periodically. Don't beat yourself up over it. It's easy to see once you know it's there. We forget that when others find out for themselves.

bro, the meme is older than 4chan, Newgrounds and I think the only known network that was before the meme is messenger and forums of the time, it practically predates the foundations of the current internet, literally the Yahoo internet lol
I used to put this song on full volume in the school library and then leave. Good times.
I was friends with the RA at college my freshman year when this went big, One evening we convinced him to turn it on his computer full blast then leave with us to go down and nab a snack at 7-Eleven before we settled in for movie night. -97 is right. I was 15 back then and we listened to this in our school's IT class (though nobody knew what IT was back then). Back then only schools and other public buildings could afford internet. How weird it is to think how we had dial-up modems and could only use internet for an hour a day, and even that cost an arm and a leg.
This video is the reason I came to youtube today, looking for a screen video capture from the original 90s site... or something close enough... thanks for this. :)
I put it up because years ago, I did the same thing and couldn't find it right away. I'm still here because I got permission and am not making money off of it. That's why there aren't many other places that show it. They are pretty adamant about protecting their brand.
