One war, ten days, three stories: the Old City of Jerusalem, at the dawn of a new Middle East. For the Brits, it's the shameful end of the 30-year Mandate. For the Jews, it's the birthday of their State. And for the Palestinians, it's a catastrophe. Only now, 60 years later, images can be shown from three opposing points of view, telling a whole new story.
The events of the 1948 war of Jerusalem, which would lead to the founding of Israel, had been immortalized through the photographs of two war photographers, British and Palestinian.
John Philip, the British photographer, was one of the first photojournalists in the world on the war in Jerusalem. His camera documents the Jews' perspective, the evacuation of thousands of Jews from the Old City of Jerusalem. Philip captures, for Life Magazine, the destruction of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
Meanwhile, Ali Zaarour was one of the few photographers who took photos of the Palestinian side of the story. His photos had never been seen before his grandson discovered them and undertook a tremendous task to illustrate the catastrophe that this war was also for the Palestinians. The Naqba, the catastrophe and the darkest day, where 750,000 Palestinians lost their homes and became refugees.
The documentary also focuses on Jack Padwais, producer of the first major film about the founding of Israel, "Hill 24 Does Not Answer" directed by Thorold Dickinson. Coming from a right-wing Jewish family, he recreated the battle for Jerusalem from an Israeli perspective. To this day, his film is consistently used in schools as the definitive account of that historic battle.
This documentary shows how photographs not only have the power to anchor history in memories and ensure that it is not forgotten but also the ability to create a story and offer different perceptions of an event.

Actually, the founding of Israel happened in 1947. When 2/3 of UN (including the 5 permanent members of the Security Council, which each has an overriding Veto power-And which none exercised) made a collective agreement that The Jews could have a portion of the ancestral homeland to have their own nation.
The 1948 war was actually an attempt by the Arab Muslims to drive the fledgling nation (minutes old) into the sea. No nation came to the aid and help of Israel. They fought several nations on their own and defeated their enemies and in so doing, Israel was able to defend, not establish, their new nation.

The so-called 'fledgling nation', of Israel, had already driven many 1000's of Arabs from their homes, long before the Israeli proclamation of statehood, which in reality, was the violent theft of Palestine from it's true owners.
In March and April 1948, the Irgun and Haganah forced over 200,000 Arabs from their homes and villages, well ahead of any Arab armies invading.
18,500 Arabs expelled from Tiberias,
60,000 Arab inhabitants forced from Haifa,
30,000 Arabs expelled from Jerusalem.
25,000 Arabs expelled from Safad,
67,000 Arabs expelled from Jaffa,
15,000 Arabs expelled from Beisan,
30,000 Arabs expelled from Acre,
15,000 Arabs expelled from Jerusalem

Part of the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, which the Jews of Mandatory Palestine accepted and the Arabs of Mandatory Palestine and neighboring states rejected, was that Jerusalem would be a corpus separatum, under United Nations control and not part of either the proposed Arab or Jewish states. Israel argued that the partition plan regarding Jerusalem was "null and void" due to the UN's "active relinquishing of responsibility in a critical hour" when the UN did not act to protect the city. The Arabs, who had been against Jerusalem's internationalization all along, felt similarly. The appointment of Dov Yosef as "Military Governor of the Occupied Area of Jerusalem" on 2 August closed the door on the possiblity of Jerusalem being internationalized.

I kinda disagree. There is theory (in which you’re correct), and then there’s reality. Of course the old man will be more cynical, as evidenced by his son saying he’d be willing to give up Tel Aviv - the wildest thing to give up except Jerusalem - for real peace. However, recent surveys find that the majority of Palestinians (especially in the West Bank) support the October 7th massacre and think it was a good thing. Almost every time people start buying into these lovely fanciful notions, somebody shatters the illusion and proves that the old man (proverbial old man) was practically (though not literally) correct.
In the Middle East the value of empathy and grace are seen as a weakness by most of its inhabitants, especially those adherent to a certain religion. The religion didn’t spread by those values and it’s power is not maintained by those values. In theory it makes sense, in practice it’s unrealistic.
What’s the point of a sanitised documentary? Photographs showing the horror can’t display reality with a great big square over it.

These types of documents shouldn't be in one place. It seems to me that copies should be kept in multiple institutions around the world and not controlled by either party to a dispute alone.

Under civil and international law, there is no concept of "ownership" of land within the boundaries (recognised, disputed and/or otherwise) of a modern state. The word and the concept should be the 'sovereignty' of the land. To misuse and apply the word 'ownership' will hinder rather than help a resolution of the Israel-Palestine situation.
Dont even bother. If these guys were really interested in a peaceful resolution it wouldve happened 70 years ago..

@@MaryamofShomal This is inaccurate. In 1911, some Palestinians started a newspaper called Al-Falastin and were promoting the idea of a Palestinian identity, so it started from that time and increasing i.e. 53 years before Arafat emerged on the scene.

I’m glad he got his album back. Would the Palestinian Authority give back such things if they had them? Israeli grace is hardly ever returned in kind, that’s why they had to build that wall. Doesn’t mean Israelis are perfect angels, but of the two people, only the Israelis believe Arabs have the right to exist, whereas the entire Arab world has outright rejected Israel’s right to exist for all of its existence, and tried to exterminate them in three separate war.

Israel conquered the old city of Jerusalem in 1967.
Exactly. They won some areas and lost others. The British armed, trained and led Arab Legion ethnically cleansed the West Bank, East and Central Jerusalem of Jews. Jordan had been off limits for Jews since its founding as TransJordan in the early 1920's.
The West Bank, east and west Jerusalem were kept Jew free until 1967, when Jordan fired on Israel and Israel responded by driving their army out. Unlike the Jordanians, the Israelis did not ethnically cleanse the region, though.
