I’m only watching this out of curiosity lol my trans whines in gear (mainly 1st and 2nd) but that’s literally all Chevy S10 manual transmissions ain’t it
Thanks for the explanation! My 2000 GMC Sierra's manual transmission ran dry about 10 years ago and I was able to limp to AutoZone in 4th gear because it was the only one that continued to work. I filled it with synchromesh fluid and was able to drive it again, but it had developed a whine in every gear except, of course, 4th....and now I know why. It also has a loud rattle whenever the clutch is disengaged at idle. I've been told that's the throw out bearing making noise. I've lived with it ever since, so I guess the old saying holds true - "GM vehicles run bad longer than others run at all."
Is it still running and making the noise? Same thing happened to me last weekend in my 2000 silverado. Same exact symptoms as you. Debating on replacing it now.
@@TigerHoover Yeah, it's still on the road and still making the noise. I figure I'll drive it til it dies, then replace it. With truck prices what they are these days, I'd much rather pay for the repair.
@@JohnGeldreich Hey, thank you very much for replying. Your original comment was from two years ago, and they still really help people out (like me). I agree with what you said about rather paying for a repair. I filled mine back up with synchromesh too. Interestingly, I called a bunch of transmission shops around town and a lot of them wouldn't consider rebuilding the transmission. I was told by all of them it's because it's old, the design is a pain to work on, and it's cheaper to go with re-manufactured. I'm debating buying a re-manufactured one and installing it myself, although perhaps I wont be in too much of a hurry since yours lasted so long.
@@TigerHoover Yeah, I think remanufactured is probably the way to go. Lots of shops have no idea how to rebuild a transmission. As for what you do in the meantime, you should find out why it ran dry. In my case, or so the shop told me, a couple of bolts had worked loose on the top near the gear shift and compromised the seal. They said they just filled in the gap with gasket maker and tightened the bolts down. It's held ever since. I changed the fluid again maybe 3 years ago, and today, because of this conversation, I decided to crawl under and check it again. Still full. Good luck!
Thanks, now I know where to look at on my w202! It makes a very interesting whine which I thought to be from the supercharger and the bypass valve(and thought it was normal). Yesterday though, I noticed that it's actually constant, just harder to distinguish when I'm on the gass. In neutral it's still there and directly related to speed, so it's gotta be a wheel bearing... I've had this car for just under half a year now and I keep finding evidence of negligent ownership from the previous two guys :D
Wow man! The counter shaft may have a different number of gears and direct drive might be a different selection but this video of noises attributed to a non shifting counter shaft transmission was pretty great. Thanks
that was a nice informative video. I was hoping it would help solve my problem but it didnt. It did give me a better understanding of what it might be.
This is a great video. Never knew how much could be diagnosed by listening for the different sounds under different conditions. I do believe now the sound I'm hearing pertains to the pilot bearing, but I would like to know how a bad pilot bearing actually sounds.
@BYUI AutomotiveVideos Thank you for sharing. Very educational video and extremely helpful to get closer to diagnosing a loud knocking sound I’m experiencing only while in 5th gear. I have a 1999 F250 Super Duty 4WD with the 7.3 turbo diesel V8 motor and the ZF6 transmission. Everything sounds normal and all shifts are smooth until I shift into 5th. Even though it shifts into 5th smoothly, once the clutch is fully out it sounds like an M60 machine gun while accelerating in 5th. As I reach the speed limit and let off a bit the rapid knocking sound quiets down a little but once accelerating again, ie passing a vehicle it gets loud again, and I mean real loud. I’ve ran it through these series of tests, all starting the same, steady speed of 75MPH with 5th gear engaged. Here’s the different tests and outputs: 1) If I accelerate hard, I have no slip at all and the torque is incredible making accelerations extremely quick, but the rapid knocking sounds get extremely loud, head turning loud, duck and cover loud from people even remotely close to my truck. 2) If I completely let off the skinny pedal, while leaving the clutch engaged (essentially engine braking/coasting with clutch out and still in 5th), the rapid knocking sound gets quite a bit quieter but nowhere near silent. 3) If I push the clutch in while leaving it in 5th gear (coasting with clutch in), the sound completely goes away. 4) If I push the clutch in, pop it in neutral, and let the clutch out (coasting with clutch out and in neutral), again the sound completely goes away. Would that mean it’s the counter bearing for my 5th gear? Any help appreciated and thanks in advance. It’s so bad I try to stay off the highway to just avoid 5th.
@BYUI AhtomotiveVideos what's the verdict? After posting this post I cruised it out to the ranch and parked it (fully enclosed garage). Now I'm looking at cobwebs and scorpions. All i want is to get Beastmode back on the road (without the artillery sound in 5th). What is is the issue here? Full tranny swap? Rebuild? Please help. Thanks.
I know this is quite the 'niche' video, but i would vote this is the best video on youtube. so simple and yet informative. use a little brainpower and solve your issues.... and i think my main bearing is bad on my 240sx..... only noise is on load 40 or so mph while coasting or decelerating in gear.
My FRS recently had a transmission issue I can't lock into any gears except for 5th. And in neutral it has a knocking noise from inside the trans when I grab 5th the noise goes away so I know exactly where to look this video definitely helped me🙏😏
I get a grinding noise when I take off on first, but I don’t feel it through the shift knob. I suspect it’s the front differential. It happens when I add a bit of gas at the biting point. I don’t feel anything on the clutch pedal either. Also, my clutch pedal sometimes goes stiff.
Thanks for the HELP!! I have the W56 manual transmission on my 1985 4runner with noises in the 1st 2nd and 3rd gears going forward from stop.... 4th and 5th and in neutral while coasting, no noise.
I have a 2007 caliber, and I have noise coming from the trans in 3rd through 5th gears. Only when the engine is applying power to it. Neutral and clutch in, no noise. Coasting in gear, no noise. I've found very little information about this transmission online. I've seen posts about it from other people, but it's either unanswered, or never solved.
I watched this video before dropping off my NSG370 for a rebuild. Although two different transmissions, very similar in mechanical design. I isolated a humming noise to either the transfer case or transmission with the vehicle on jack-stands via mechanics stethoscope and also ruling out driveline by removing front and rear driveshafts independently. Following, I rebuilt the transfer case and the noise continued. The noise was through all gears but more prominent in 4th, 5th, & 6th. The noise was also consistent with clutch disengaged or rolling in neutral. I told the transmission shop I was 99% sure it was the main output shaft bearing and sure enough it was toast.
My 1997 Mustang GT has started chirping. I hear it most in neutral. Shifts through gears fine. When I depress the clutch, the noise stops. When i release the clutch, it chirps a few times and then quietens down. Was told this is a pilot bearing? Am I correct in assuming that I should just go ahead and replace both the pilot and throw out bearing since the bell housing will be opened up anyways? I guess there is no reason not to change them both. If you could advise, I would be greatly appreciative. If not, I still appreciate your video above. I have searched what seems like THOUSANDS of forums, and I have heard it all explained 50 different ways to Sunday. Your video actually allows me to see it function and to compare it to the symptoms that my car is presenting me with. Thanks again!
When I slow down my new range rover Evoque it started clicking noise after 750 miles from gear transmission, I took to the land rover Garage they said it is normal few land Range rover Evoque make the same noise is it true?
Great video. Can you explain gear rollover noise and how that would be differentiated from input bearing noise while in neutral and clutch pedal released?
Bearing noise is usually a constant noise, gear roll over noise or gear chuckle can be a slightly choppy rattle type noise as the main shaft and layshaft gear teeth chatter back and forth. Try changing the gear oil for fresh correct weight oil first, gear oil does wear out of grade over time. Fresh oil often dampens the gear chatter down.
Both my wheel bearings are changed and the noise have been there for YEARS. I have a clio (fwd). It has to be the transmission even if the noise doesn't go away with the clutch.
There's also another noise associated with gearboxes that I only become aware of after installing a heavy duty clutch in a 4x4, it's called "rollover noise" or neutral gear chatter. Apparently it's common in sports cars and some 4x4s straight out the factory which creates warranty issues. Apparently it causes no damage what so ever. It is however annoying. Thinking it was an input shaft bearing at first I decided to remove the gearbox and have it fully rebuilt to replace all bearings (because I'm thorough) it turns out my gearbox (through proper maintenance and use) was like brand new. I'm now left with neutral gear chatter.
That noise is, from what I understand, the power pulses of the engine causing the gear teeth between the input shaft and countershaft to chatter back and forth between engaged and disengaged, just across their backlash distance. When you're under power in either direction in gear, that backlash is taken up because of the force pushing all the gear teeth into mesh.
@smatt9993 - Thank you for mentioning "rollover noise or neutral gear chatter!" I did not know this was a thing and was thinking an input shaft bearing was bad. I have a 1989 RX-7 with 47k miles that has had a loud growl in the trans in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal up). The noise completely goes away with the clutch disengaged (pedal down). The noise has been present since new, the past 34 years (original owner), but the trans works great. I changed to Redline MT-90 synthetic fluid and it quieted down a bit but the noise never went away.
Could be clurch plate dampening springs unloading & loading (they should be under load constantly when clutch is engaged), hitting the rivets, or 1 or 2 loose ..
I found out what was wrong with my T56 Tremec,2 of the rear tailshaft flex coupling bolts were a little bit loose so that was probably interfering with the mainshaft somehow. I only found out when I was adjusting the handbrake shoes & checking the CV joints for play as I was also hearing a clunking sound from the rear end. At least one of the CVs has a bit of play in it but tightening the bolts up has fixed the problem so far,I'll keep an ear out for any unusual noises, the rattling noise is gone now !
Skipped over one bearing that has given me problems before, primarily in the Ford SROD four speed. The pocket bearing, that's a little needle bearing in between the input and main shafts. In this case, it would make noise in every gear except third (direct on this model), in one case so loud it sounded like a diesel.
My noise progressively got worse in all but 4th gear. It started with a whirring sound, and then a tick-tacking sound. After about 500 miles the racket was so loud it became clear the failure was catastrophic! I hadn't any option but to pull the pan, and when I did... The main gear on my counter shaft was mangled! So to the junkyard I went, a couple gaskets and seals later and the correct fluid I had that transmission running just like a song.
Whirring noise above 55mph only when under forward power. Disappears when in neutral or clutch disengaged or decelerating. Had multiple garages tell me this is a wheel bearing but it doesn't sound like one to me due to the fact it disappears when not under forward power.
09 Jeep Jk manual. So after shifting from a dead stop or into any gear there is like a crackling/rattle noise when I give it gas after I shift . The more gas I give it the louder it is. Its really bad if i start out in 2 or 3rd gear from a dead stop. Maybe a bearing issue. It does shift good and it never pops out of gear and I have changed the trans fluid after the problem started.
My ford ranger makes a hissing sound when my clutch is pushed in. And when my clutch is all the way out. It gets pretty loud in 3rd gear and 5th gear. And when I'm doing 35 to 65 mph and I pop it into neutral, it still makes the hissing sound until I come to a complete stop. I thought it was my clutch. So o had a shop replace my clutch and it never went away. And then I decided to change my transmission fluid and the sound went away. But only for 2 days. Then it came right back. Not sure why it does it in neutral when I'm rolling though. Oh and also side note, I have been driving it like this now for about 16 months and it's always the same. No worse no better.
Thank you for the video ! Trying to understand as I am bot a mechanic. I do have a knocking noise only when in 5th gear on a motorcycle . The possibility is to be the main shaft bearing ? Thank you !
Question? 2012 srt8 challenger. No noise while driving or in neutral, but in idle(stop) theres a noise that sounds like rattle spining sound coming from right side of the gas pedal area.
What causes knocking noises when changing gears with a slight jerking motion? Sometimes when I press in the clutch, there is a knocking noise. It's a 21 year old f150 4.2L pickup truck.
Question...I have a bearing noise that really kicks in around 60km per hr and once up to 120km...it dissapates (whirring noise is only there when pressing accelerator) somewhat...also, if I have the car in cruise control and then I press the clutch, the noise goes away 🤔????
Our 3 speed manual transmission makes noise in 1st and 2nd gear when we let off the gas pedal. What bearing would that be? Does not make noise when depressing the gas.
What if I have wining noice when car is driven for 15 min on any gear and any clutch position and noise coming from the clutch flywheel area? Thank you!
My gearbox went low on oil and started making a whining noise in fourth and fifth gear more so 4th than 5th, now I did about 20 miles of easy driving with this noise and topped it up with oil straight away and it's fine now with no whining noise it's a vauxhall vivaro 2007, so I'm wondering if it will be ok after this or have I possibly created a problem that might accour in the near future??
What if a noise occurs only when in first gear from a stop to full disengagement of the clutch? Meaning just stop to release of the clutch at 2-5mph? The Sound is kind of like a hoot or a howl.
If your tie gets caught, you'll hear a choking noise.

I changed to Redline MT-90 synthetic fluid and it quieted down a bit but the noise never went away.
Could be clurch plate dampening springs unloading & loading (they should be under load constantly when clutch is engaged), hitting the rivets, or 1 or 2 loose ..
Excellent tutorial I needed a refresh, now I can sort out that bmw r1100gs gearbox.
Great video. ☺
thank you sir. my issue was towards the end of the vid👌
now i gotta find the time, place n the right tools to replace the throwout bearing 😫
Learning, diagnosing my car AND asmr, I hit the jackpot
In this case, it would make noise in every gear except third (direct on this model), in one case so loud it sounded like a diesel.
yea ive got that.....noise except third gear...tingly car key noise.....
I had to figure out my release bearing by logic, wish i had seen this years ago when i was learning!
Thx 4 that video 👍
What a great video!!
Americans: Conufused screaming! Bu.. b... But i only have two legs!
Honestly, a lot of americans know how to use a manual car.
@@thomasmccabe3850 maybe grandpa still knows
@@andreasa.2226 I own a manual truck...
you are a genius I have a bad bearing in my countershaft 4th gear is good the rest of the gears McCracken I thought it was a I thought I threw a rod
How much did it cost to repair?
How much was it ?
Same
great video
I've got noise in neutral and 1 2 3 4 gear but goes away in 5th. Any ideas? Isuzu nkr58 mini tipper truck. Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks a lot!!!
Thank you !
Great video 👍🏻
Thank you!
Nicely done.
