For decades Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules. His new album, spirityouall re-imagines Americana with beloved spirituals and original songs, raising the roof with joyful grooves. This bluesy, feel-good recording (featuring an incredible lineup of great musicians including Larry Campbell, Charley Drayton, Gil Goldstein, Larry Grenadier, Ali Jackson, and Esperanza Spalding) is an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy," his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic, his improvising choir Voicestra, and his legendary solo vocal performances.
All that pioneer spirit and virtuosity has opened up a great big sky, including game-changing experiments in multi-tracking. But virtuosity isn't the point. "I try not to "perform" onstage," says Bobby. "I try to sing the way I sing in my kitchen, because I just can't help myself. I want to get people to just sing the way they do when they're just hanging out waiting for the bus, in their regular "blue-jeans" voice. I want to bring audiences into the incredible feeling of joy and freedom I get when I sing."

Google talks are legend. They're a staple of modern society. We're going to look back in 20 years and think "oh yeah Google talks! How rad! The interviewers were so hip and confident and with-it!"
Hmm, the guy - Bobby McFerrin - is 63 years old in that video. Yet he is so relaxed, witty, even good- looking (his age is hard to believe) and the musicianship exposed on that scene is just staggeriing. So human, so warm, so alive. Who needs mainstream pop music when this here is available? And no, I wouldn't want to change seat with the interviewer - he doesn't really seem up to the task :-)

I love everything Bobby Mc Ferrin does ~ and have for years. He is one of the most responsive channels for the Gods Of Music on the planet...the ULTIMATE vocalist. I call him, "Human Music". If you are worried about his 'tuning' (see comment below) I think perhaps you are not allowing yourself to surrender physically to the experience of listening. 'Someone should tune him', if I read what you mean correctly (you are critiquing his pitch?) sounds like a comment made from the analytical mind ~ and this music is a body-heart experience.
And I and all of us love that love for the music. Thanks for writting that touching comment.

Nevertheless (or should I say thanks to the misunderstanding), the answer he gives is sooo profound and comprehensive. I am extremly thankful for it!

I am reading this some years after the fact...nevertheless, the comment made regarding the tone or pitch of this man is somewhat ambitious in trying to see / hear something that is not actually in the real world, NOT there. As both an Engineer and musician, I began to realise that this type of vocal performance has, or may have a somewhat standard jazz perspective to it based most likely on the understanding of a live performance, in respect to a live audience.BUT, when you begin to hear the solo elements of this performance, one hears the influences from a plethora of jazz greats, all of which have inspired us all to learn and pursue music in the first place. The idea that a lack of tone and/or pitch is evident within the performance, does not nor should ever enter the conversation or comment. This level of arbitrary criticism cannot be supported, primarily, because it does not exist.in truth or reality...Keep ahead., Music is the Human Being.

It's really uncomfortable watching Alan Seales (the moderator) try to convince himself that he's cool. And he's socially competitive about it, which makes him appear mean.
