Let Go and Create! Spontaneous Abstract Painting Exercise

  • In this intuitive art demo video, I'm jumping into a spontaneous abstract painting exercise designed to help you let go and create. We're embracing the chaos with a 15-minute time limit, focusing purely on spontaneity and expression. No overthinking allowed! This tutorial is all about letting go of control and seeing where your instincts take you.
I kicked off this intuitive painting session with some charcoal and black alcohol marker marks, knowing they might not survive the entire process. Drying layers quickly with a hairdryer, I made sure you didn’t have to watch paint dry - literally! The main aim here was to jump in and start painting without any specific prompts, just a few tubes of paint and a time limit to guide me. This is about being spontaneous and seeing what emerges. (If you’re looking for more specific prompts with guidelines, check out “50 Abstract Warm-up Painting Prompts" www.etsy.com/listing/16615441...)
Throughout this painting exercise, I aimed to be as expressive and intuitive as possible. The goal wasn't to create a masterpiece but to enjoy the process of free-form painting and let my creativity flow. I found myself getting lost in the act of putting paint down, reacting to it, and repeating the process. It's amazing what can happen when you allow yourself to be instinctual and free.
This exercise reminded me of Henri Matisse's quote, "Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working." By letting go and embracing spontaneity, I discovered a little figure in the painting, which I later highlighted at the end of the video.
I painted on 140lb watercolor paper in my sketchbook which I taped off to an 8x10 inch area. Remember, the key to these warm-up exercises is to enjoy the process and let your creativity shine. Don't focus on the end result; focus on the joy of creating. Let's get messy and have fun with this spontaneous art journey!
    And remember, keep on painting!

Hey Jan! Thanks for your feedback. I just started working on a better video set-up in my studio so I can do just that-larger canvas paintings. My studio is fairly small and it's difficult to capture larger paintings with my current set-up. Stay tuned...

Great. What a cool video. One of the best bits about watching you paint is that you always catch me out. All that mass of warm colours ended up covered in cool ones. I think you are a great teacher to help unlock the flow of creativity Chris. Your videos show how much can be achieved in a modest length of time😊😊😊

Thanks, Emmanuel! The great thing about painting in such a short time frame is that I'm usually surprised with the direction I go in. It's always excited to see where the painting ends up (even if it's just mud sometimes).
How has your painting been going? I haven't had a chance to hop on Instagram much over the last few weeks, other than to post a couple paintings. I'll hop on this weekend to see what you've been up to.

@chrisloudart Hi Chris, Exam period, so lots of marking and not enough painting. Not sure about digital art. I try not to be on my phone if I can avoid it, and I have no other device at home. I think I might like it to play in abstract forms, but nothing beats the hands on tools in hand, I suspect.👍

I couldn't agree more-both on staying off the phone and creating with actual paint and tools! I'm sure you're quite busy this time of year with school, hopefully, you'll have plenty of time soon to get back to more painting.

Well, being honest, I can’t really grow as an artist without your tutorials. It’s been years now that I’ve been following you Chris. Each new video teaches me something that I didn’t know, or haven’t thought to try.
Yes, Matisse said that about inspiration, and the work itself does energize and inspire, no doubt, but…Matisse didn’t have the internet! He would have been in awe seeing your tutorials! No doubt. I know this to be true because I grew up in the arts, I know inspiration when I see it and feel it. You are it! ❤️

Welcome back home Chris! Hope your time away was inspirational. I've tried to get into digital painting, at this time though I just can't, one day I will though, I'm slow at progressing with technology, I think its my inner hoarder, I like my collections of paper, canvas and sketchbooks 😄😄. At first I saw a face and when you gave it a squirt of water it was a crying face. Then after that when you turned it I saw the butterfly/moth, and you're right once seen its not possible to unsee it😆😆. Nice having you back, I enjoyed this video and I'm looking forward to the next, make your week a good one! Cheers!

I'm glad it wasn't just me that spotted the butterfly/moth in my painting. I'll have to go back and look for the crying face. It's always fun to hear what others see in these quick paintings. Cheers to a great week ahead! 😊🎨

@@chrisloudart thanks Chris, well the week is looking good so far, my mum's little house is coming along, the rain water tank arrived today and the colourbond cladding should go up during the week. It was suppose to be up to lock up last Friday but we had gale force winds and heavy icy rain so it was too dangerous for the guys to work so they got off early, the windows are in and by the end of the week they should be doing the fit outs inside. Well the crying face was that really light oval shaped patchand you had a darker patch in about the eye position then you squirted it with water and it looked like tears. Looking forward to the next video installment. Take care. Cheers!

@@chrisloudart @chrisloudart Yes mums getting excited about her house, the colourbond sheeting goes up today, and the roof. I'm not a builder but I would've thought that once the windows were in the roof would've gone on, but as I said I'm not a builder. Its 55 square metres, so nice and cosy, less to heat, my home is the same size, and its really good to not have to clean/ heat/cool, a huge house, and both on solar with gas/generator back up for winter. I enjoy trying to see a story in the shapes you paint and its interesting if you end up seeing what I see as you create it! 😊 The weather's been surprisingly mild given its officially winter, although wet as usual, but normally its much colder. Well, better go, I'm getting better at not waffling on 😊. Cheers!

Could I make marks with an alcohol ink pen at the end? At the end after the mark I spray fixetive or I could go directly with the varnish?

    • @chrisloudart
      @chrisloudart  Před 28 dny

I've added alcohol marker at the end without any issues. The lighter colors typically don't show up well for me over top of darker acrylic paint though. I would at least give the area with the ink a quick spray of fixative before varnishing. Hope that helps. 😊
