Jon Stewart's ability to jump from comical to deep conversation on heart felt issues back to comical is a master-class in action.
that's why I love these shows. they're reputable, intelligent people from the artistic world that voice truth and beauty and present it on this platter dressed with "fun-sauce"

Hey man, before I hit the sack, I want you to know I'm going Defcon 3 on yow asses 👀
@Un Woke mate are u ok?
😦😦😦😦
Jon is a very wise man and empathetic. It’s easy to lash out but to actually have a conversation is the difficult part.
lashing out after 400 years of oppresion is undertsandable.
@@xMXWLx I agree. When I made my comment I was, and still am, referring to anyone who has a knee jerk reaction to everything that they deem controversial. And am I speaking about “controversy” such as Dave Chapelle’s SNL monologue. I thought he did an excellent job in ushering in civil discourse about the topic at hand. But I think that he always does. Like I said, lashing out before having an earnest conversation is so much easier, but very detrimental to our society.
@@xMXWLx Also, the only people lashing out here are the antisemites. The Jewish community is being super measured in their response.
Why does "free speech" always seem to mean shelter Nazis and grifters from any consequences whatsoever?
@@TheParentalRevolution we have to TALK to those people too.
at 10:15 you can tell Steven Colbert sits there in silence not because he's awed by Jon Stewart's commentary but because he's too stupid to formulate an intelligible response.
For a minute it almost feels like the audience isn’t there and these two are having a straight up honest conversation about the way things might be in the world. That is authenticity at its finest.
two? Colbert was just trying to keep his empty head from floating away
This is a prompted, bullet-point, semi-planned conversation on a talk show. This isn’t authenticity, and it’s pretty sad that that’s the word you used.
when he said "I see it in your eyes" I laughed harder than I've laughed in a long time.
Same here... he got us good with that one. The best bit
But who cares when God gets the last laugh.
The crazy part is he meant it. It was an inside joke meant to go over our heads.
At the end he mentions how he knows Colbert doesn't agree.

Jon Stewart thoughtfully conveys complexities in a world that is awash in soundbites and gross over-simplifications. I hope public discourse can become more like this.
100% FACTS. You're spot on.
I agree 👍💯.
You don’t think he was over simplifying his opinion on this topic? Come on man..
Shame he can't do the same thing on his new TV show but he does a good job here.
Stewart is a fraud-his Dad worked for Dept of Treasury& his brother was a COO of the New York Stock Exchange who collaborated with Maddoff on PFOF. He’s a plant to deflect and divide Americans-he especially pushes racial division. Why? Because if poor white&black people are busy blaming each other they won’t blame the Ruling Class who run things. Has JS ever once mentioned the NSA, the CFR, the Federal Reserve, the Trilateral Commission, Central Banks, Darpa...??? Nope: and he won’t because he’ll virtue signal by claiming he supports Veterans but he never calls out the Globalists&Banking Dynasties behind all wars. Stephen and Jon's kindred friendship just makes me so happy.
Not just with "the facts" or "reality" but with humility, empathy, and an earnest intention to understand where an individual is coming from.
that's a strong message. as i commented before, when the guy that's mostly right has this open attitude of not being the smartest in the room and listening, it sets a big example
I actually understand how people feel this way. I mean, I'm a socialist! Scared of climate change, wealth inequality and the problems they cause. Easy ways of being manipulated. That's why I have a no-kill policy. Because, I mean, what if someone convinces me its the jews?

Is a reason the best political show for years was on a comedy channel.
The impressive part was he disarmed Colbert and derailed his "this is dangerous" before he ever got to bring it up. While not everyone is as good as conversations as Jon, we have allowed the names to be wailed as clubs to prevent discussion on many topics.
The daily show with him was ……. Just consistently such a salve. Game changing is putting it mildly.
John Stewart is a g. He has always kept it real. He is a genius. He showed the difference in who can talk. He joked. And he knew what he was doing. I love that he stated that he doesn’t necessarily agree with everything but agrees that a person should not be penalized for their opinion.
John and Steve I miss this
He is the only one can dare to call Israel out for the bad treatment of Palestine .. he is the only one that has a natural balance between seriousness and laugh ..
Preach John!! He has such a way of making a strong point and infusing it with jokes at the right moment to diffuse tension
The tension is because Stephen likely disagrees with this idea that we should let bigots and disinformants and hate-mongers have as much platform as they want for the sake of “debate.” And Stephen is right. And Jon is wrong. Responsibility exists in the world, and no one is obligated to platform violent and terrible ideas for the sake of “fairness.” Basic values have to exist, and one of our values is that ALL people have a right to security and dignity. Which means that a neo-fascist does not have a “right” to a microphone if they are going to use that “right” to implicitly or directly attack the rights of others.
Yeah, like, I know you don't like Jews. I can see it in your eyes, reverse psychology, trading places.
@@artlesscalamity348 Nope. You don't even get what he is saying. Simpleton.
@@patrickbertlein4626 I get it just fine, it’s just very reductive and ignores the complexity (and dangers) of the problem. While the IDEAL of open dialogue is noble, the REALITY of platforming disinfo and fascism is that society regresses and destabilizes, democratic guarantees are weakened, and people die. It’s not a philosophical issue, it’s a security issue.
And calling someone a “simpleton” is not an argument. I can back up what I’m saying with piles of sources and research.
@@artlesscalamity348 I mean, Stewart is talking to a guy who invited a Jew onto his show during the rise of antisemitism to deliver a segment on accepting neonazism. I believe wholeheartedly that the Twitter mob is well out of hand, but this is entirely different. I think much more harm than good comes from allowing racist nonsense, especially from influential celebrities, to proliferate on social media. Kanye posted antisemitic in the months leading up to the "deathcon 3 on Jewish people" idiocy. I don't recall any "useful conversations" stemming from those earlier tweets being allowed to "air out". And how would those conversations go exactly? Can you even imagine a large-scale civil, productive conversation around racism occurring on Twitter? Oh yeah, I can see it now, a slew of antisemites tweeting back how this conversation has really turned them around. Stewart's take strikes me as foolishly Pollyannaish, especially when you consider that antisemitism is currently on the rise worldwide and people are suffering because of it.

@@arlom5132 Sure.... but labelling things in black and white by definition ignores reality for ones own convenience. To actually bring people to your side, you have to be willing to understand the nuances of their criticisms and statements, then correct the points where they went astray. If people were actually doing what you just described it would be fine, but there's a complete lack of the follow up, the only thing that happens is the labelling and shaming. We don't explain to them why they got it wrong, we expel them from society and never let them back in.
Peoples interests don't seem to lay in understanding and reconciliation, it lies in demonizing the other side. It's what the right does on abortion and 'wokeness', and the left on stuff like this racism. One of the reasons why he at times interrupts the guest or only takes a one or two line answer to the questions instead of further explanation is to speed up the segment so as to get more things to talk about. But many people don't see Stephen from this perspective, they find it rude and such.
@@Happyllama220 Colbert was funny back in the day and I actually rather liked the Colbert Report. That being said, I'm glad he let Stewart do his thing.
If you carefully watch the clip again, Stephen actually presses Jon to give an answer even after long non-answers until Jon finally answers him. Jon even realizes this means there's disagreement.
As pointed out at the end by stephen himself... he can't reveal his personal feelings about the issue because it's too dangerous and may get him canceled.
Jon Stewart has the ability to bring this conversation forward with an observation that begins with his heart/soul, and I admire him deeply for that. Thank you!
Very true:).
He starts the conversation with fascism didn't win. What a joke
Well it didn't, so I'm not getting what you are trying to say.
And he follows it up with action.

Jon Stewart is such an intelligent and thoughtful man.
Jon Stewart is such a concise speaker, lovely to see in a world with so many muddled and guised words
Please continue having such discussions like this in interviews. It's so refreshing and enlightening compared to the tweets, news headlines, and other 'short form' media we're inundated with.
You are right. Real life cannot be explained in 140 characters or however many are allowed now
Each of us has the opportunity to speak like Jon Stewart (though, in all likelihood, not as well), and to choose "not to bury the nasty stuff" away in some corner. Of course, in order to speak like Jon, one needs to be well informed and current regarding the pressing issues of the day, and this takes some attention to detail, and requires effort. Most of all, we need to be civil to those who disagree with us, so that we can hear them through, and judge what it is they say, and not who they are solely based on what they say. Kudos to Colbert and Stewart for raising the issues that are raised here.
Not Colbert's bag, hard to sell a shit movie or album off nuance and genuine discussion. We should all be thankful Stewart came back and is injecting maturity into The Late Show in small doses.
@@westonhunter5979 eh? He generally does great interviews. He's great at pulling genuine discussion out of people in a very respectful way.

To be that sharp, that thoughtful, that well spoken and that funny all in one just blows my mind. The two together is real treat. Two of my all time fav personalities.
I have been a huge Stewart fan for decades but I’m really not feeling this. It’s far too vague and equivocal and I don’t think he actually answers the question or addresses the issue. He says oh we can just use facts and logic to disabuse people of racist and antisemítico beliefs but when does that actually work??? You think Qannon or Greene or trump cultist will actually engage in a reasoned and evidence based conversation? Look at all the damage caused by the publication of the protocols of Zion, should that have been allowed to br published so it could be debunked? What that expression about a lie travelling around the world before the truth has tied its laces? What he is saying may work with some people but engaging in debate or being polite etc with racists etc is what they want, and it doesn’t work. Love Stewart but he’s showing his age a bit here inasmuch as it’s not the 90s anymore. The right and the racists are like they were during the Clinton or even Obama years.

Stewart, yes. Colbert, not so much
Jon Stewart is always fresh air: funny, incisive, sobering, and what a communicator!
Kind of like his good friend Dave Chappelle.
umm, no. Rick Sanchez had a rocket ship climb in his career to the top as a Latino, until J. Stewart made it his mission to constanlty discredit and bully him when he still had the daily show. When Rick Sanchez called j.stew a bigot, Sanchez was immediately fired for being 'anti-semitic'.
Also, Wyatt Cenac was a super funny stand up comedian- and the only black writer for j.stewie's daily show. When j.stew imitated then black prez candidate Herman Cain in a trope 'black voice', Wyatt voiced his concern to j. stew at the writers' meeting only for j.stw to yell at him at the top of his lungs in front of everyone, "fuck off! I am done with you".
Why won't john stuart leibowitz practice the same tolerance of opinion and address the wounds that he creates that he preaches?
And why did the two people he attacked face consequences, but jsl was shielded from dealing with any of his consequences?

The guest is absolutely right. If there is a problem in someone’s thinking, The best way to handle it is sit down like two adults, and discuss it in a calm and professional manner.

@@6offdutyninjasN1 Then you're not watching/talking to the right people. I have friends who I disagree with politically and often get into heated debates with. What I've noticed is these same people will hurl insults when debating online but are more level-headed and actually discuss the topics when having face-to-face discussions. Social media and the internet have fostered a culture of keyboard warriors and echo chambers. Talking with my politically divergent friends doesn't magically make us agree with each other. It reminds us that although the person we're debating may have a different set of values and priorities, they're still good people at the end of the day.

Have you heard of Brennan Lee Mulligan? If not, your world is about to get brighter
he's just another dem party hack
A true gem? Stewart is on the board of Next for Autism, an extremely ableist organization that infantilizes autistic people and promotes autistic conversion therapy (otherwise known as applied behavior analysis).
In 2016, he gave a glowing review to “To Siri with Love,” a disgusting book in which the author twice said she was considering having her autistic son forcibly sterilized when he turned 18.
He’s only a “gem” if you don’t think disabled people don’t deserve the same respect and basic human rights as everyone else. For him to wag his finger at anti-Semitic bigotry, while promoting ableist bigotry and institutionalized abuse, is the height of hypocrisy.
@@KingMinosxxvi Hey look, everybody! ^ It's one of those tropes Jon was talking about!

Yes!!!
and Colbert is the opposite unfortunately. He cares about his reputation and what others thing way more than help heal and discuss difficult topics with his own point of view.
@@steve19811 I don't see that, at all. Besides, These two men have two vastly different jobs. Jon has much more control over his show, that he created, and he's in a position to not have to worry about advertisers, or studio executives and censors, or whether or not one of his guests ever agrees to return after he eviscerates them on camera.
Steven, on the other hand, has an obligation to the legacy of the show's brand, the network, the studio, the advertisers, the writers, the guests, and all of the other people who make the show happen every night. The Late Show is a part of the state's tourism. Literally, hundreds of people's livelihoods depend on that show.
It's not even a fair comparison.
Is it not enough that Colbert gives Jon as much airtime as he possibly can, to talk about practically anything he wants, while promoting and supporting nearly every move he makes? He gives him network exposure to promote a show on a separate paid subscription network, all the time. He gives him a huge space to voice and share his message any time he wants. Do you honestly think he's not helping to promote and encourage discussion of important topics? Seriously?

Don't make the mistake of thinking the extremely woke "vocal" minority represents the majority on the left, the same way the election denying/maga "vocal" minority doesn't represent the majority on the right. Most people are somewhere in middle leaning left or right. Its our broken political system that forces us to support one extreme or the other.
@@Prince36300 As a lefty on the economic issues myself who listens to Jon, I can tell you that Jon is to the left of all the self-identified centrists and even many lefties. Wokeism is a social/cultural movement, not an economic one, that many lefties don't agree with. Wokeism just happens to be bundled together with "left-leaning ideas" in this point in time through a reductionist non-nuanced narrative peddled by the mainstream.
@@AdilAmeerPutin I think we are driving towards a similar point. I agree, Jon is firmly on the left and while Id argue the term "lefty" in '22 implies far left social politics, it is probably pointless to get in vocabulary debate. My original point is that most lefties do THINK like Jon. We are just not as represented in social and traditional media because the incentives (attention/conflict=money) favors people and ideas that are extreme, simple, lack any nuance and provoke emotion. Even if you do think like Jon, you are deincentivized to talk this way because of potential backlash and harassment from the other extremist viewpoints. The issue is the medium and political system not the voters themselves.

@7:50 his metaphor with a wound and needing to open it up to cleanse it, in the Netherlands we have the saying: "zachte heelmeesters maken stinkende wonden" - "Gentle healers cause stinky wounds" == This proverb is actually a warning that sometimes you have to take firm action right away to solve a problem. If you are too 'soft' in your approach, for example if you take half-measures because you are afraid of getting into fights with others, the situation can only get worse. The problem then "festers" - perhaps unnoticed at first - until it turns out that it has only gotten worse. The healer in this proverb refers to an unqualified physician. Until the nineteenth century, besides doctors, there were also healers: they mainly treated wounds, fractures and growths.
