The Stages of Desire | Soren Kierkegaard Either/Or

  • All of us have felt desire in some way, but we usually dismiss it without much thought. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard broke down this emotion into three stages in his book Either/Or. These stages are not independent of one another but are rather more akin to a metamorphoses. The past stages do not die with a new one, but rather, the new stages are “disclosed”.
Stage one of desire is without a specific object of desire, but it’s after something general. Kierkegaard’s example is the character of the page from Mozart’s opera Figaro. The page had this “sleeping” desire for womanliness. It’s something that doesn’t exactly have an object for the page to specifically desire yet.
After that is stage two, which has a specific object of desire. This is the kind of desire we’re probably most familiar with. We see a dessert we want on the menu and we wanna eat it, or maybe there’s a specific person who we are attracted to and we’d like to date them.
Finally, there is stage three, embodied through Kierkegaard’s example of Don Giovanni. This stage is a unity of the last two stages, having both a desire for the general and the specific. Don Giovanni was a seducer, pursuing multiple women. In this sense, he was pursuing the general (seduction, intimacy, etc.) through specific people. #philosophy #existentialism #kierkegaard

Your videos are such a great example of how interesting and well made content can be even if all you have are toons and a voiceover! Always great to see a notification from this channel! I don't know if Kierkegaard was somewhat excessive in his depiction of the aesthetic life, but I do think he has a point. Being an aesthetic is all fun and games untill anything comes up that takes away the focus from the superficial distractions and forces you to look at what you have that's even a little bit constant in your life. I think that's when people might experience depression, it's a later stage of the aesthetic life and only manifests itself when and if people place all of their attention on it, ignoring other areas of life, and then are faced with the realization that all that time amounted to nothing of substances and was thus wasted. Stoics be like: "we warned you guys" 😅

How do you distinguish desire from limerence or rather not letting desire become limerence? A firm handshake to you for assembling this wonderful homage to my favorite writer ever

I’ve never had a casual experience. I’ve only had serious relationships. However it’s probably my culture and age. 49 and brought up in a traditional catholic hispanic household. I will agree that some of my friends sure looked like they’ve had their fun in the dating game. Nice video as always. Thank you.

It' a trap, you get the hottest sex but you lay in your bed alone, and wanting more than sex, wanting company.

So you can have unspecified desire (can't be gratified), a desire for something specific (and it lets you down, getting what you want), and then wanting many desires of a similar kind (polyamory)?

On the second stage, i think what A. Is saying is, if the object of desire dissapears, you are no longer in the second stage of desire. You go back to desirering "food" because you are hungry. In this example, food=womanlyness. If that makes sense.

Excuse me sir but in the beginning of the video you mentioned how you will edit out a part about how you desire the mom from Disney's show Wizards of Waverly place, however it's still in the video. I thought it best to bring this mistake to your attention in case you would like to correct it. We may all have sexual fetishes (Latino milfs in this case it would seem..) but to accidentally reveal them in a philosophical video might be very embarrassing! 😅
