- Howdy Folks!
The first part of my Grimdark Painting Fundamentals Series is an introduction video where I will be discussing the basic ideas of the Grimdark painting style. The main topic in this video will be on the differences between the ever-popular Games Workshop style vs the Grimdark style of miniature painting and will include important information about the various thinners and solvents used in conjunction with oils and enamels.

Thanks a bunch mate, I'm fairly prone to revisiting this video often, this I've only just noticed but helps a bunch
@@ThePaleMarcher1955 Cheers, Kyle. I come back a fair bit too and just thought it would be helpful. I was going to do the others at some point, but I get distracted painting GrimDark! 😜😂
@@hobbybobley ahahahah aye fair enough, I also get pretty distracted painting the good ol Grimdark goodness
My death guard needed this. I worked so hard and hated my minis. Now I see they were just incomplete. Streaking grime, old rust, dirty down. Im excited to finish them. Great videos!
Would love to see this style on Nids
Okay, you've done it. I have ordered some paints, inks and a miniature that is highly detailed in armor and hoses and other little bits. I am way out of my comfort zone with this type of painting, but I love your stuff so much I want to learn it. It's because of people like you that I think this hobby is growing at the rate it is. Thank you.
I appreciate that! Contact me any time you need help!
You're like the Dark Bob Ross. I seem to lose myself watching you paint and then I have to go back because I'm like, "Wait. what did he just say?" Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing.
That has to be the best comment ever! I grew up on Bob Ross and he has influenced my work since the beginning! Thank you.
Laurence Blanche IS John Blanche the longtime GW artist
Ade Roberts right? I had to stop the video and double check. I thought I was crazy. I was like “His name is John...not Lawrence...and he is an old school GW artist that HEAVILY influenced the style”
@@03dashk64 He goes by Laurence on social media, I think he may use his first name for one presentation and a middle name for another.
Ade Roberts I learned something today! Thanks :)
Thanks for the clarification. Like a few others I had a brain fart for a minute.
I didn’t know that. I totally derailed from watching the video when I heard “Lawrence”... 🙄😆
I'd love to see how you do this style on Eldar, as I think they're probably the least grim dark of all the races in terms of models/aesthetics
So glad grimdark is a thing. As a bad mini painter, I often felt like the warhammerTV way (base acrylic, wash, highlight) was the only way and that I wasn't good enough to depart from orthodoxy. Now thanks to you I know there is another way! Thanks so much for the inspiration! Btw my wife and I bought your Lady Olinder tutorial a bit back and boy was that worth it - an eye-opening experience!
Coming back to minis after years of ww2 scale models I've been wondering for a while how well a heavily weathered & rusty admech army would fit. You just answered all my question and went well beyond. Amazing work there, Thanks a lot!
You opened a completely new patinting perspective to me. Was looking for a video to paint wood on a flat surface, and I found this instead. Very happy.
I'm not even in painting myself (never had the courage or money to get into it younger) but I like to watch videos on the topic and I must admit your work is amazing. The overall aesthetics is top-level and suits the universe perfectly.
I'd love to see some Skavens painted this way :)
I've an entire combat patrol of Death Guard built that's been sitting unfinished fir 8 months because I didn't really have any paint scheme that I liked. Those things are getting things are getting finished in the Grimdark style this weekend. This is awesome.
oh man, Grimdark is SO awesome!
Loved your style and the tips.
Looking foward to watch the rest of the series.
I've always wondered why the style of GW doesn't match the universe, so this was really refreshing to see, especially the point about edge highlighting.
You guys keep blowing me away with your skills. It’s unbelievable.
thank you I appreciate it!
Fantastic video. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series, and trying these techniques!
I have been following you for a while and now recommend your work to all my friends.
Thank you! That is very helpful, I appreciate you.
Have started my Soulblight Gravelords army and this is aesthetic I want 100%. Thanks for the content.
This is an amazing guide. Thanks so much for taking the time to make it.
Really looking forward to this series of tutorials, I love this style of painting and have to say you have got it down to a T. Keep up the good work, existing times.
Ty ty!!
I've been looking for something like this for so long. Incredible work dude. Going to attempt to do some grimdark alpha legion with the advice in this video
Going to give this a try soon. Thankyou for passing on your knowledge, very much appreciated!
Thank you and you're welcome
Great work! I ordered several AK weathering products last week, after watching this video.
Awesome! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! I love the grim dark paint Style but I have no idea how to do it. You truly are a master.
You came out with a Dark Angel grimdark just in time. I've always lived the grimdark, aesthetic feels like it mixes so well with the 40k universe.
immediately fell in love with this style after viewing this video
Dude thank you so much for this. I want to get back into the hobby and as a long time admirer of John Blanche and oldschool GW/WH40k in general this method of painting the pinnacle of style and narrative for me.
This was great! I'm stoked for the next video, I cant wait to try crossing into mixed media!
Awesome! I'm so glad you are going to try it!
I just found your channel, you already answered a lot of the questions I had. Also amazing work!
waiting so badly for your next part , i love your style
It is the next video I'm making.
I feel like I'm more immersed in the world when I view your models and just get a sense of incongruence with the traditional style on certain GW models. Caul is an excellent example, I'd say. I've been wanting to get into warhammer and miniature painting for a while now and you are a huge inspiration on what I want my army to look like. Now it's just super hard to decide between AOS and 40k
I appreciate that!
The biggest thing i can say for choosing between AOS or 40k is go with whichever will be easier to get friends to play or find local players for
Outstanding; thank you for sharing your expertise!
I appreciate it. Thank you!
Love your work! Thanks for the video and all the advices in it!
Thank you! You are very welcome
Great video! I am going to try a Grimdark style soon for sure!
Oh crap, thank you for new video!
thank you so much for doing this!!!
Great introduction! Already a customer of your videos, but always fun to see more :) Finding myself going back to your older videos for inspiration to my own new projects. Right now I have Tech-Priest Grombrindal that I thought to do in the grimdark style, so gonna rewatch some of your stuff now ^^ Will be waiting for part 2!
Appreciate it!! Cant wait to work on part two myself.
Thanks!!, A good video about all things Dark! :) i have been painting like this for some time now and feel it is way more fun and fast then the GW standard. I have fallen in love with oils! I do use the AK true metal, AK grimes, and 502 oils.
I'm really thinking I want to paint my GW stuff in this grim darker style. thanks for this.
It's so nice to see different painting styles. Super informative.
Thank you I appreciate that!
@@GrimdarkCompendium Would you consider doing a video based around the housekeeping of using enamels and oil paints? I want to get into it, but especially with oil paints I feel like I'm just going to ruin my brushes and potentially other things.
@@grantbalmer6951 I'll will talk about that in this series.
Love this, so much. Going to test this on some ultramarines asap. Would love to see a video on how you'd do them, must be unreal!
Awesome! There is an Ultramarines series on the website. Grimdarkcompendium.com
Dark, Darker, Grimdark...looks awesome!
Ty ty!
Coming from a background of Eavy-metal style painting where EVERYTHING on the model is painted, I decided to pick up some TOP E'S golden boiz adeptus custodes! I painted my usual style (Never realllly like the "in your face" gold so i washed and brought down the gold to a bronze/copper look) and then found myself going darker, and darker, AND..darker. Boom, gimdark custodes! and I LOVED it! it also made me realise i don't ned to pain't ALL the model, and rather focus on the zenythal to bring in constrast from light to dark.
Before I finished watching, I am coming down here to say, the ambient music was SICK, I love it. Perfectly fits the chaos feel
Love your tutorials
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Amazing, THANKS!!!!
Your Ad mech look so good! I’m going to have to try this
Your grimdark style is way better dude love it
Great video! you've inspired me to try out a whole new style of painting :-)
Reminds me of the old Inquisitor models. Great stuff.
Awesome video! I’m hoping to do a Grimdark Space Wolves successor chapter and am finding your content to be really helpful.
Awesome video. I have a question for anyone who may know though - in the video mineral sprirts are used to clean up the enamal washes, but can they also be cleaned up using isopropinal alcohol or white spirits? Thanks in advance.
Hi I have just subscribed to your channel, just wanted to thank you for sharing your beautiful work and how to achieve it
I don't know if you are aware of it good sir, but you are revolutionizing how models can be painted. You are really pushing the envelope. Dont ever stop.
Appreciate that! Let's hope a lot of folks notice!
Wonderful looking work man! I'm going to try to utilize this on my D&D undead miniatures since many undead appear too bright to me. I think this would transfer really well to Lichs, Wights, Ghasts and many others. Ogres and goblinoids would benefit from this as well.
Thumbs up and subscribed! Much awesome, gonna binge watch the rest of your videos now. Do you have a full video with the painting of the ghost at 18:20?
Cool stuff
Yes, yes, yes! This is exactly what I was looking for to paint up my Death Guard. I much prefer that dark grimy look...and I just happen to have picked up a few of those AK washes and effects.
Awesome. Check out the grimdarkcompendium.com there are quite a few death guard tutorials there.
@@GrimdarkCompendium What's the difference between the three subscription levels? There is no description of what each level includes (how many downloads per month, etc). Also, when you buy a tutorial outright (e.g. $9.99), do you get to keep a download of it like other sites? If not, how is it accessed? I'd like to buy a couple of the Death Guard tutorials - hopefully you can answer the questions above first. Thanks!
Awesome style, I love it, but... I also love the classic style, I don't know Chaos army's look so awesome in grimdark. Thanks for all the tips!
Appreciate it! I like the classic style as well!
I'm going to be painting some grimdark night lords soon.... I'm super excited!!!!!
Awesome! Let me know how that goes!
That sounds super bad ass! Please post a link to some pics when some are done
Amazing
Ammo by Mig has a nice oil paint series, their weathering products are great as well.
I would really like a tutorial on a harlequin grimdark, thinking about trying it out but would love some help. 😁😁
Also like when using the sreaking grime, could this be applied with a brush and still get the same effect
Nice Vid! I am using Abteilung 502 colors and my special solution for my miniatures (pin washes/panel lining) for years and I am allways very happy with the result :D
Awesome to hear!
Fantastic video. Been thinking of trying my hand at the grimdark style for some time now. Btw care to share just how you got the blood splatter effect on the Lady's gown? That is amazing and exactly how I've pictured painting her but could figure out how to make it look that realistic with the blood
Do you have a list of all the basics I will need.. I’m getting my airbrush this week,, can’t wait to start 😊
John Blanche was heavily into using vibrant yellow and red on top of a black or sepia underpainting. So the box art is really Blanchitsu as well... I like your style better, though.
Love your work Any tips on drying the I’ve bought some 502 Abteilung oil paints I use a blow dryer but if I add some highlights in acrylics it doesn’t stick and forms droplets what should I do and what airbrush nozzle size should I use
100% agree with Edge Hiliting? GW pushes it and its over done. A good Blend and Contrast is so much better. Great Videos mate. Thanks for sharing your talents.
thanks for your tutorials. I'm wondering if it's ok to go with those water mixable paints from W&N (as I paint in door, as my desk)
Awesome video- this is exactly what I've been looking for. Do you think there would be any issues using the oil paints over GW contrast paints?
Thank you. As long as they cured it will be fine.
I ordered some streaking grime after watching one of your videos. Holy shit that stuff Is good.
Haha that's great. Yes indeed! Streaking Grime is an actual game changer.
OMG YES!
HAY! Thank you!
Hey mate, love your work. Your channel is amazing and im going to check out your patreon after work to support!
I have a question... will mineral turpentine work the same as mineral spirits?
Hey , thanks. Yeah it will work.
Great video!! Good point about thinners. I am so tired of people saying that mineral spirits will dissolve or reactivate acrylic paints. Ive literally never varnished my acrylic coats before putting oil washes, and I have yet to see any of the undercoat dissolve. Marco Frisoni also has a video where he shows a plastic sheet painted with acrylics and he puts pure mineral spirits over the entire thing and none of the undercoat dissolved. Like you said, nothing is dissolving, but if you are having problems then the acrylics either aren't fully cured or the mineral spirits are getting under the paint.
This reminds me of the artstyle of the forgeworld team.
Do you buy any chance have the colour/paint breakdown you used on the Lady Olynder, Mortarch of Grief that you showcased here? Specifically her robes, as its pretty much exactly the scheme I intend to do.
Thanks a bundle for this great vid!
I like the "grim-dark" style much more then the GW style but they do that brighter style mainly for advertising purposes.
Agreed, the GW style is too cartoony. This is more realistic to me.
Great video. + 1 vote for weathing white
Will be interesting to see a grimdark grey knight paladin
I love your style of painting and I want to try it out so badly! @Zatcaskagoon which of your videos is best to start after watching this one?
Also, can this grimdark style be done without an airbrush?
That freaking terrain portion at the end. Ugh! I need to do this.
I do appreciate the Grim Dark style as presented, although I am personally a fan of a bit more saturation in the colors. Going too far towards the grim-dark style makes the miniatures pretty boring under average lighting and on the tabletop, requiring more intentional staged lighting for the details to pop.
I agree. However, the average playing environment does not match the aesthetic. Put this style of miniature on a table top that creates an environment of a similar style and well, perhaps your perspective may change.
I guess building a playable surface that truly demonstrates the destruction of war is a difficult task, but I personally have always tried to make my table tops look the part. I feel like this is an aspect of the hobby that is severely lacking. Maybe I should make some tables and document the process.
@@GrimdarkCompendium you should that would be super bad ass! Then we can see the entire grimdark scene🤘
You can put the oil paint on a sheet of cardboard to wick the linseed oil out of it.
This reduces the shine and quickens the drying time.
You can use any good quality oil paint for models, the pigment is actually the important part.
My Google Fu is weak, but I recall seeing a site where the model painter used cardboard to extract the linseed oil from his canvas oils to get them prepped for making washes. (Thought I had saved that, gah!) He just but dabs of the paint onto raw cardboard and let the oils get leached out for a while. May be worth trying for the folks having trouble getting their hands on the brand discussed in the video here.
You can also add an isolation coat of clear varnish between your acrylic layer and your weathering layer. Hi can do this multiple times. Do enamels last.
Also you can use Windsor Newton or other artists oils, just use a piece of cardboard as a palette - the cardboard will take out the excess linseed oil.
Also, don’t use Series7 brushes with oils and enamels - you’ll shorten the life of the brush significantly. Get some Princeton 4050 (I think) artificial sable to use with oils and enamels
Is it possible to paint acrylic over the enamel once it’s cured? Thanks for the video really enjoying your content
Thank you for a great video! In terms of products, can Sansador from Winsor&Newton be a substitute for regular white spirits with the same effect? Honestly, I want to get in into oil panting, but have safety concerns due to the nature of solvents.
I know this is an older video but this whole style of painting is new to me, and I really like it
Can you still use GE paints for this style? I have a LOT of GW citadel paint and don't really want to have to go out and buy a bunch of new paints.
wanting to get into the grimdark style and was curious that if you are concerned about mineral spirits getting under the acrylic base coat, incase you miss a bit, can you use a matte varnish over the base coat before applying oils/enamels and using mineral spirits?
I love the style and would love to try it, but am quite intimidated by my lack of an airbrush. It looks near impossible to do with a brush, to me. :(
How would you go about painting bone?
so when you use the streaking grime, how does it work with decals? would you seal it with a clear acrylic coat first? would that hurt the finish?
I usually dislike using oil paints but after seeing this I'm not so sure anymore. I love the Blanchitsu style.
what kind of brushes a re the best for oil paints ? Amazing work.
I typically use inexpensive brushes like Royal and Langnickel but also use Windsor newton series 7 for finishing.
There is a Euro Painter, loves the Bianchu Style, and Grimdark is an evolution of that, but antecedent to your furthering work, I am reminded of my adopted uncle Hunter S Thompsen, "Blood Brother" to my true uncle Earl Biss, a painter in his own right, worth looking up when it comes to hues, shades, tones, and opacities. Thompsen's favorite artist, and his illustrator back in Rolling Stone was a man named Ralph Steadman. I understand your work, though on a game table at four feet it would appear like a greasy smudge, your "realism" the rust and what armor really does look like in the artificial light of a space cruiser. You are highly proficient, dedicated to your style, and humble .... I just hope you pack some bear spray or C/N gas so "you" feel safe and go for a walk barefoot through the grass now and again. In the end H.R. Geiger was reduced to a shut in that just drew dead baby skulls over, and over again. Try and hold to the notion that your work, your depictions of tone shade shine opacity and artificial shadow and light does not consume you. just an alternative view. As for which is more valid - call a quorum of crazy people.
Love this style and I am going in this direction, but how does it look on the table top under regular game table lighting? I worry it is too dark for the table top.
I too wonder what it looks like. I guess a white background with the minis would give a good example
I just recently found your channel and website and very much prefer this aesthetic to the box art style. I would classify myself as an intermediate painter, but up to this point have used what I would call the GW method. I am very interested in your style. I currently hobby in a basement room with little outside ventilation. Could you give a brief description of which methods could be implemented safely and would not require the addition of a ventilation system? The Mrs. would not be happy with fumes in the basement leaching up through the floor in to the rest of the house lol.
Hi. In my Amazon list (link in the description) there are a couple options for filtration. If you have a window or door at the least that leads to the outside you can pick up a small hobby airbrushing booth. Another option would be the "shop fox" which is what I use all the time to keep the air filtered.
Invest in some sort of air ventilation my man. Its a fundamental part of this style. Save your respitory system 😅👍
Are mineral spirits interchangeable with paint-thinner as a thinning agent for oil paints?
