    A painted auto body parts will have three layers, primer, paint, and the clear coat. If you happen to scratch your car, if it's white steaks you're seeing, then don't go ballistic with painting. Remember, clear coat is similar to a layer of epoxy. This layer if scratched mildly, loses a small bit of the surface which is the white powdery residue you see on freshly scratched door or bumper. This scratch is an easy fix and needs only touch up to restore the sheen. The touch up involves 3M rubbing compound and an orbiter with felt pad. 5 minutes of compound buffing + 3M waxing fixes these clear coat damages aka. white streaky scratches. The rubbing compound is an aggressive polisher which at 300 RPM smoothens the surface to make it mirror-like. Thus restoring the gloss.
    But If you see black at the spot where scratch has occurred (in the case of plastic bumper), it means clear coat+ paint+ primer is stripped. If the scratch is on the metal door or metal parts in general, the deep scratches will leave the shiny metal exposed. Both results are result of deep scratches that cannot be restored using the method I described earlier. In such cases, you will have to mask the surrounding areas and first step is to sand down the spot and areas around the damage to bring evenness in the surface. Then apply the primer and allow several hours to cure. before dry sanding the excess. Once you feel confident there isn't uneven surface, go with the exact paint used on the car. You only need to remember the name on RC card or invoice. For instance there is a slight difference between diamond white and oxford white. Pick the paint wisely else you'll end up with odd spotty paint. Nippon is usually preferred by auto brands, you can also go with ordinary spray can brands if you're not too bothered about quality or if you happen to own an old car. Then, placing the can 12 cm apart from the surface, start from outside the masked area and follow a sweeping pattern L-R; R-L; L-R; R-L. While doing this, make sure not to stop in one spot too long. After the first coat, wait a good few hours. Then repeat the step to complete the second coat. Then, the third after 12 hours. Finally, let the paint set for 24 hours in a clean environment. The final coat is a clear coat which can be applied as a single coat or 3 coats by spacing them hours apart. Then after a good length of time has passed, use 3M wax and buffing pad to get mirror finish.
    If anyone is wondering why quality paint jobs are costly, remember this. If you rush the paint, you'll never achieve 50% of the factory gloss. A proper paint booth is a hyper clean environment with not a single stray lint in the air. The room is controlled in terms of temperature and moisture. This is very important to get the most perfect finish. In home environment, it isn't easy to achieve especially if you live in a dusty Indian condition. This is why most roadside Indian paint booths only achieve about 75% of factory finish after repair. You can't blame them for the sub par work because the environment is mostly contaminated by dust, lint, and average airborne pollutants which degrade workmanship quality. So to future DIY'ers keep this mind. Your paint outcome is decided by humidity, airborne contaminants, and then lastly your approach. This is the only difference between INR 2000 and INR 40000 paint job. You're mainly paying for environment, high-quality paint gun, high-quality paint, and high-quality compound. Rest is the same everywhere. There is no special approach that is unique to high-end paint booths that a DIY-er can't replicate.

      Very nice detailed reply. I just scratched edge line of my new car's bumper at bottom. White paint is stripped off and at the scratch end there are paint flakes, so I believe it is deep scratch. But not able to understand why the inner layer that is exposed after scratch is silver white colour, when bumber's are plastic made ?

    • @Sobin16
      @Sobin16 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Could it be possible that the silver paint is from whatever object that made contact with your car's bumper? Sometimes, when you collide with objects or vehicles, paint can transfer from one surface to other. In my old car, I had a green streak near the fender, which came from an autorikshaw. 15 minutes of vigorous rubbing helped me get rid of that stain. For car bumpers made of fiber, the bare surface is always black when you strip away paint clearcoat and primer. So 100%, it's not metal that you are seeing unless it's a vintage car that has a metal bumper.

    • @mihirpanchal7325
      @mihirpanchal7325 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @Sobin16 Mine is 2023 i20 :) And no accident else I would have doubted of that rubbing colour. Only possibilty I can think of is the road side curb where I may have turned little more towards curb. But then also why that silver white colour is smooth and even. So can that colour be because of primer+clear coat? So that it has not scratched till black plastic of bumper?

    • @Sobin16
      @Sobin16 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @mihirpanchal7325 Normally, clearcoat is colorless because it's a resin meant to add gloss and shine to the surface. If it is scratched, it leaves a white powdery residue like when you scratch a plastic ruler with a blade. The primer on the otherhand, is usually grey due to cost reasons and some luxury brands use black white and red variably to match the color. Since you say it appears silvery, my reasonable guess is it could be a thin layer of honeycomb fiber to reinforce the bumper and withstand curb rashes.

    • @mihirpanchal7325
      @mihirpanchal7325 Před 4 měsíci

      @Sobin16 yes i think should be fiber then. Thanks for these replies. Will see what can i do as it is very thin line though long, thinking of "smooth with sand paper > apply scratch filler putty > again smooth it > apply top coat > finish with rubbing compound"

    @jayd5030 Před 2 lety +3

    Firstly Kudos to your effort.
    The issue with this kit - and what makes the finished result sub par is not your workmanship but the kit itself
    1. lack of clear coat
    2. The rubbing compound barely has any bite.
    The shine comes from a well polished even layer of clear coat.
    Now To get back that shine ,
    step 1: just apply any 1k/2k clear coat with a paint brush on original scratch only
    Step 2: get that door compounded , polished at your local experienced Detailer .machine paint correction with proper pad and cutting /finishing compound will bring that gloss since all that blemish is sitting on top of your thick factory oem clear coat. Hand based correction will be tiresome to say the least.
    Do wax later on to maintain that finish .
    My two cents as another diy-er

    Instead doing this when you have such scratch use nailpolish. Find the shade that best matches your car or try to mix different shades to match the colour. Then use a thin art paint brush which you can get at a stationary shop and apply 3 coats on the scratch. Then finish it off by applying a layer of clear coat.
    Total cost approx : 150 rupees
    Result : Not like the oem quality but quite satisfactory.

  • @soumyadipdas8380
    @soumyadipdas8380 Před 29 dny

    This such a sloppy job. There are multiple problems with this.
    1. Body fillers are for dents and scratches that are so deep that they have penetrated the metal to chip off some of the top layers. In this case it was just a regular deep scratch that probably only just penetrated the base coat or primer. A simple sanding and respraying would have sufficed.
    2. Too much application of the filler and the complete filler wasn't sanded of. We need to always run our hands through it to get a feel of the surface.
    3. If you wet sand a filler (which is not necessary). Give It time for it to completely dry off before you start applying paint coats as trapping the moisture in would result in paint bubbling/fish eyes or peeling or even worse rusting.
    4. Apply every coat gently and at least 10 feet apart. Rather than applying the whole coat at one go use multiple small sprays 5-20 mins apart. This would prevent rundowns and allow it to properly cure.
    5. Not masking during clear coat as it overflows to the matte plastics.
    P.S : Also masking with electrical tape? There are masking tapes out there for dirt cheap. Also that's not how one should mask. The tape has to run all the way along the border of the newspaper.

    Please don't do instruction video if u don't know properly wat u r doing🙏.
    Faults at ur procesures
    1. Should properly stick papers edge fully with masking tape or painters tape ( otherwise spray paint will go inside newspapper opening)
    2. No need of applying putty or body filler for that hairline scratches , till 1mm deep, just sand it flat. Otherwise your putty and painted surface will be not level with company painting
    3. For wet sanding u should dip entire sandpaper on water, the water is used as lubricant to not cut paint too deep. Just wetting edges of paper is risky that non lubricated part wil make contact and make deeper sanding
    4. Don't paint that much paint on first application, just need to make 5% coverage on first coat that is just to make 2nd coat stick perfectly
    5. Should not hold the spray can too close, it will make it runny.
    Blaming on wind , that's y on the first place it is recommended to sorround the painting surface with newspaper, and u just stick edges of newspaper leaving out open spaces on centres.

      @@tnoc-tamilnadunexonownersc2458 I am not disrespecting ur urge for DIY . But u should have watched some serious DIY painting videos from experts other than watching this paint companies 2-3mins video which is just made to make it look simple and should've tried on some old items before going on to it on ur new car. That scratch u had first was not that much of deal first of all, a good car polishing guy could have easily fixed it with a good DA polishing machine 80-90% and make it invisible.
