Fasting vs. Muscle Loss- Don’t Believe All Fasting Study Results- Thomas DeLauer
Questions that will be answered within this video:
    - Why did this study find that fasting seemingly results in muscle loss?
    - How does this study compare to a similar study which found that fasting did not cause muscle loss?
    - If you're looking to build muscle and are someone who fasts, what does this mean for you and what should you do?

All the general principles will work for practically everyone. Eat meat, fish, eggs, fat as needed and it will control glucose, mediate insulin/ghrelin/leptin and thus hunger leading to weight loss. IF works for weight loss for everyone in the long run.

If you’re fasting for a “long” time, it means you have “less” time to eat, and load up on calories. Weight loss is based on calories in vs energy out, not “eat this, not that” and then “magic” happens when you don’t eat. It’s quite a silly concept. I’m not saying fasting doesn’t have health benefits. I’m saying fasting doesn’t promote weight loss like this scam artist claims. Thomas is such a liar. He will say anything for more views.

Eating all that fat concerns me too. I did the keto diet for 2 months to lose 20 lbs and only lost 5 lbs. I later realized my mistake. I was eating too much fat and my body was burning it, instead of my own fat. During those 2 months all that fat screwed me over. I had insomnia, brain fog, short term memory loss and erections night and day. Cholesterol makes the sex hormone testosterone and the high testosterone caused erections out of nowhere. I was also taking cayenne, because I heard it helps the body burn fat, but later learned that it can also increase blood flow down there, which also contributes to the problem. It was super embarrassing when they popped up in public. I was also worried about what all that cholesterol was doing to my arteries. Anyway, I'm going to start eating lower fat and also eat low carb vegetables, like you are doing. Instead of full blown keto, I'm gonna do more of an atkins type of diet. Those are some good ideas you have for what to eat. Those cauliflower pizzas sound delicious. Anyway, whatever you're doing is working, because you look great. Have you ever tried the almond flour pizza?

I used a combination of low carb & IF to lose 35 lbs last year. I wasn't intending to lose weight. My main goal was to reduce inflammation due to osteoarthritis. It had been getting worse for a few years and I was at the point of frustration and ready to retire at 57. The thought of retirement in constant pain wasn't appealing. LC and IF made a dramatic improvement. Pain down 50-75% in hip and knee, gone completely in the hands and lower back. The weight loss probably helped as well. I had real appetite control for the first time in my life. Not eating just became a natural pattern.
Keeping the weight off has been easy. I was keto for about a year and now I slide between keto and LC, never exceeding 50-75 net carbs a day, all from vegetables, berries and a little honey here and there.

As long as you are following a proper exercise program that includes resistance training AND you eat enough protein with added BCAAs and HMB you won't lose muscle. As an exercise physiologist with over 27 years of experience you NEVER want to lose muscle. Muscle is metabolically active and it's how you BURN calories AND stay strong with a strong metabolism. Plus, you don't want to be sagging when the clothes come off. Muscle is YOUR best friend so don't lose it!

@@DarkAbyss9 Yes, but because you are attempting to mislead people by saying it's not necessary, let me clarify a bit more for those people who want to be educated regarding this topic!
NOT everyone has the GUT health to efficiently digest AND break down PROTEIN into amino acids, so adding BCAAs assures you get the three essential amino acids you need to maintain adequate muscle, especially during a fasted stated or low calorie diet like Bekrz was following! BTW, I'm explaining this intelligently to people who may read this so they can understand why I recommend adding in BCAAs even though you supplement protein. So let me repeat! PROTEIN is very hard to digest for a lot of people, especially people with gut issues like having low stomach acid AND older people in general. They take in a ton of protein and their stomachs knot up and they get constipation from HELL! Supplement with BCAAs and you won't have to worry about the digestion part of it because they are already broken down into their most assimilated form and can be readily utilized by the body. Hope that's not too hard for you to understand!
I've been in this business probably before you were born Mr. Genius so do your own thing, but I want to clearly explain myself to people who might be genuinely wanting to learn something. Not people like you who go around critiquing comments by professionals by putting your own BS in it and then call names like a scam artist or idiot. Anyways, for the more intelligent folks out there that read this comment, please understand what I am saying is FACT based on my own 27 years of experience in the health industry as an exercise physiologist with extensive training in functional medicine and helping thousands of men and women over those 27 years! I just finished a 72 hour fast. I went from 254.4 lbs to 248.6 lbs in those 3 days, however my galaxy watch shows me losing significant muscle mass. I went from 85.1 lbs of skeletal muscle, to 81.3. Nearly 4 lbs of the 6 lbs lost was muscle. Now to be fair, as is said in the video above, muscles store glycogen and when you deplete that reserve, the muscles shrink but it's not real muscle loss as the scales and body composition scans imply. I'll monitor things over the next few days as I return to normal eating and see what happens.

From what I have learned (from you, Thomas, and others), first the Modern American Diet (MAD) is "suicide by food"; second carbohydrates are something to avoid, or learn to avoid; third, altho appearance is certainly a factor, it should not be a goal. I never knew about losing weight with fasting or lower blood sugar or higher ketones before watching Thomas DeLauer. Intermittent Fasting has helped me break through my weight barrier and get down 100 pounds from my highest weight. It's not pure IF, drinking keto coffee with protein powder, MCT oil and vitamins (30 calories) about every hour during my 'fast'. It does help my stomach shrink so I get full with less food, don't get crazy hungry and eat less in general.

I started IF in January of 2019 and lost a shit-ton of weight. The problem was, I lost muscle mass too. I wasn’t ripped by any means, but I was bulky... I even lost my ass, in the process, all because I was IF and not working out.
Fast forward to today; since March, during the CA pandemic shutdown, I gained 30 pounds... which is kind of a good thing I guess, because I had gotten too skinny...
This time around, I get to experiment again with IF *_AND_* weight training.
Along with my IF, I’m working out every day, and after 5 weeks of training (I began Sept. 17) I’m already seeing results - my glutes are even making a comeback.
All this experimenting did a number on me mentally, but I overcame that part as well and understood that it was also par for the course.
If you’re looking for a surefire way to lose weight (and quickly), than IF is the way to go. Just keep in mind, you WILL lose your muscle mass.
If you don’t want to lose your muscle mass, start weight training - doesn’t even have to be rigorous... body weight/calisthenics will do just fine.
Man, experimenting on myself has been really interesting - I love it!
    Thanks Thomas DeLauer!

I like this study because it shows that IF alone doesn't work as well as IF and eating better and working out. I think it shows IF is a good first step in a better diet, but for best results it needs to be combined with other strategies. I've been doing IF for a year now and have had good results, but IF caused me to improve my diet in other ways as well. I've had multiple conversations with others about IF because of the good results I've had, but some have gotten frustrated because it doesn't work for them. A big reason for this is because they think they can eat anything they want only in a specific time frame (i.e. 8 hours). When they combined the eating window with even a small improvement in their diet their results improved.

Not gonna argue about the fact that fasting has health benefits. But from a bodybuilder’s perspective it really does rip muscle off your frame quick, i’ve done it in the past and i’ve actually seen how it destroys my lean muscle mass. And if you really think about it it kinda makes perfect sense because all of the body’s natural processes that require protein are still happening whether we have protein or not and all that protein has to come from somewhere.

    Good Job, THOMAS
...99.99% of our waking experience is 'Psycho-Somatic'
...after the age of maturity (30 years ) the body doesn't need a fraction of the food and can cycle fast over 72 hours with the best results
...the only problem is the 'concern with food' that people develop from 'cooked food' (must eat fast) and 'spiced food' (tend to overeat) and up to six meals per day diets
...the first thing that I learned when I was studying the 'fasting body' was to 'forget about it'
typically after 3 days, I had zero hunger or concern with food
...during a 30 day + (I lost count) fast I had to set up an omen (in Hawaii-Waikiki ...to find ripe papaya) in order to confirm that I was human and needed to eat with humans in order to believe that I should be normal
...I could run at a sprint down the beach endlessly ...I ran almost everywhere that I went
...I only catnapped for about one hour per day
...I felt that I had found the 'Fountain of Youth' ...I would never need my alimentary canal again
...I believed that I got all of the elements from the spring water and sunshine and air (Prana)
at sunset, a friend gave me ripe papaya that he was handed by a tourist
...needless to say, my omen was decisive and I came back to Earth (so to speak)
A NOTE THOMAS: IMHO, working out ...wears out your integumentary system (tendons, ligaments, cartilage, myofascial-connective tissue) and causes arthritis, rheumatism, and neuritis type ailments
    LOVE YOUR WORK...
