Lyrics:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win - Hudba
Bought this in CD so many years ago. Had no money... Not even for an ice-cream. But decided to ask dad every start of the week. Took me some long weeks to raise the money. But I eventually did it. It's funny, I look back, and it's probably the best money I ever spent.
António Pinto
Me too, good buddy. Bought this CD circa 1996. I don't know if it's possible to wear out a CD, but I did my damnedest with that one! I sang this at a camp talent show in 2000 directly to the girl I'd had my eye on the whole week. It worked! Thanks, Boss.
Bruce, you spoke to me when i was 15, you speak to me when I'm 53, you'll speak to me when I'm...
This mans ability to write songs that cut through your heart cannot be overstated. Probably the greatest songwriter of all time
I don't think there's any doubt Mark.
Greatest songwriter? No. Outstanding but there are many and one's preference is subjective.
@@bbmtge like uh, that’s you’re opinion, man. The Dude
@@davefarrar2901 Congrats on your intelligence as that is exactly what was stated.
@@bbmtge I just want my rug back man!
I was walking down the sidewalk the first time I heard this version on some headphones. By the time he starts playing the harmonica at the end, my eyes were full of tears. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank you, Boss.
Know exactly what you mean. I just have to hear those first haunting notes on that harmonica and I start to well up. Can't explain it to anyone who's not a fan of the Boss, but it's been my 'go to' song for years. A masterpiece.
With you there. Cant count how many years ive come back to this song. Imagine writing those lyrics..
The Boss at its Best! Pure rock poet. Gives me goosebumps everytime and leaves me speechless. Every note, every tone is a masterpiece in itself.
The River does that to me
It's funny I also have the same reaction to this song's ending. I am teary eyed and happy at the same time. ❤️
I just don't understand how somebody cannot like Bruce Springsteen. His music and lyrics are just spectacular.
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore. Genius 💚
I was a kid in rural eastern KY, ca. 1997. I wore this CD out. I had no Discman, just an RCA boombox with a CD player I got for Christmas, so I couldn't take it with me. I remember endless summer days, wandering the backroads, fields, woods, and hollers, singing this version of this song over and over to myself. I was a latchkey kid, bored out of my mind, restless and unfulfilled, never been much of anywhere. Now I've traveled the world, found love and fulfillment, and live on the opposite side of the globe. I wouldn't trade the life I have now for anything, but sometimes I wish I could return to that July haze for just a day, in my youth and strength, wandering those open fields, nothing ahead of me but endless, anticipatory potential. Bruce got me through a lot. Thanks for this time capsule.
Imagine performing a song you wrote decades ago, must make him feel like he is 25 again. Talent like his is equivalent to winning the lottery.
easily my favorite song ever by anyone - it'll never be anything but beautiful to me.
I so agree. Its a masterpiece in blue jeans and a soul stirring performance.❤
100% agree with you same
Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk....you sure did, brother. You sure did.
Also, I love the comment section for this video. It makes my heart happy to know that there are so many ppl out there who hear this song the same way that I do. ✌🏻
My absolute favourite version. Stunning
One of the most evocative, heartbreaking, songs I've ever heard.
Screen door slams, Mary's dress sways. Like a vision she dances across the porch...painting pictures with words!!
Such a deep interpretation of his own poetry. And a beautiful tribute to Dylan's legacy
Is there a better song? Full of promises made, full of dreams that may not come true. The character journey is to be far greater, win or lose, than the town they are blowin' out of! Perfect song,
This is perfection. Absolute fucking perfection. ✌🏻
What a song. My god.
Greatest song ever written, words so relatable like most of his songs are... genius
Liam From the most inauthentic musician of all time. 🤦♂️
@@dallasburns7388 yup. True
@@chr970 he often admits that the stories he tell in his songs are not his own, how is he inauthentic
@@euanisles9122 used to like him. But he has always faked this “working class hero “ act. Members of the E street band even said so. He is a phoney. You know, “save the planet, don’t drive ICE”, all that stuff. In the meantime he has spent years flying his daughters back and forth to France for horse back riding sessions, and he jets all over the world. So, Thunder Road was once my favourite album, still great to listen to. He was a good song writer/story teller. But not exactly authentic.
@@chr970 well on the music side of things, I don’t agree. He has always said in interviews that the songs he writes are mostly stories from his fathers life. Ive never once seen him claim them as his own. But yeah all this save the environment stuff is just done to get a good rep. It’s very common for the rich and powerful to promote these messages and think it doesn’t apply to themselves. But still it should get in the way of your music listening experience and whoever I’m listening to i try to think of the stories told by the song rather than the guy behind the mic.
When he plays acoustic, you can really hear the Bob Dylan influence. If you stripped the music away, you would still have beautiful poetry.
cozyslor Bruce is an inigma, he’s got his own style but his persona is based on what he liked growing up. Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger & many others.
I never really looked at it that way- I grew up with Bruce- my husband went to school with him, while I had his music. The old Asbury Park was home shooting pool, and riding Harleys..and Bruce Springsteen. It was a barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge- Reading your post now, I can strip away all the old years and agree. Especially on Born to Run.. TY- I'm off to practice now, but you've inspired me..xxx
@@tatianaroveda Cool. I grew up not too far from Asbury. In terms of the music, when I listen to his early stuff, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle and Greetings, I can hear the influence of Van Morrison. I think he's stated such an influence (among others).
Most of springsteens stuff was written by tom waits, check the liner notes, almost all his hits, including this one.
@@allenrodgers5079 I am not aware of this. Nor is the internet. Waits wrote "Jersey Girl". Please send me a link with the liner notes or perhaps another link to this info. Always willing to learn but I see no evidence of what you're stating.
*Boy you were born illuminated ... there is something extremely special in your eyes and gestures*
Bruce is the best singer / songwriter in this country!!!!!!!!
In this world!
His best song ever! Touching and sad. Life is full of pain. Mary's pain. His pain! Hope!
Sometimes the acoustics in a set are just right...and then sometimes the voice just works better....and once in a while they both come together. This MTV concert sound was just the best Boss ive heard. Right in his prime too.
Ciao Barry!sono completamente d'accordo con te!😊😅😘💘❤️
I bought this cd back on a whim in the 1990s. Though I had listened to Springsteen before on the radio, it wasn't until this performance that he spoke to something inside of me. Nearly 30 years later and every time I hear it, it's better than the last. Especially lately, it stirs something inside me. I'm still waiting to win. I hope I can some day.
THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST LOVE SONG'S OF ALL TIME. THE STORY HE IS TELLING US. IS SO TRUE TO MOST OF ALL OF US. THANK YOU BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR BEING OUR BOSS ALWAYS. SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG WHEN IT'S BROKEN DOWN TO THIS.
One of the best beginnings of any song. The finish shows his relative youth at the time. He hadn't quite learned to finish, but he became a master for sure.
when the organ started, i started crying...unbelievable piece of music...
One of the best songs ever
This was the lullabye I sang to my kids every night ❤❤
Best version ever! The ORGAN is perfect! What poetry...... The ORGAN is brilliant!
A masterpiece and a master class in songwriting. The best songs transcend just an aural experience and become a movie in my head. Sometimes I regret not taking the time to learn more about film making. Every measure of this song is like a frame of a movie. I can see it as if I just got done watching a video that doesn't exist. I'm also a guitar player and I play this song live sometimes, and always with the utmost respect for it. What an amazing piece of work, and it's not the only one he's written.
So many nights spent listening to Springsteen. I never forget the words
This song makes my heart explode. It could be written by me, if I had Bruce’s geniality. Thank you Boss!
This is my favourite live version of this incredible song...such simplicity but such beauty and power in the lyrics and the voice... sheer magic
Really? You should check out 1975 in London or some of the 77/78 tours.
90s Springsteen is by far my least favourite. The material he produced during his Human Touch and Lucky town phase is just too bland and cheesy for me. And something was wrong with his voice during those years, that weird nasal tone and scratchy high pitch ...
Absolutely love this..............
My favorite version of this beautiful song. Bruce is the master storyteller. I would love to jam with him...
There's something about this performance that gives me chills... a stunning song... probably his best 🎸
Jesus. Incredible version.
I remember watching this the night it aired. It blew me away. Still does today.
If I had only one song to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be this one....
At the 2:21 minute mark the ORGAN starts playing. That is why this is his best version ever. Listen @ 2:21 mark
agree!
church!
This is the greatest song ever!!
Amazing how this song sounds fantastic no matter the setting. I remember the first time I saw him he played it with just Roy accompanying him on piano. Unforgettable, but this version ranks right up there. The organ sounds great. Thanks, Bruce and Roy. 👏
I love this version and watching him singing this beautiful song is a treat for both ears and eyes. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This has long been my favorite Springsteen song & this has always been my favorite version ❤️ Oddly, I heard this before ever hearing the original…there was no going back.
So glad this concert is finally being put on CZcams
john capone The HBO special Live In NYC also back up!
john capone I HIGHLY recommend Live at Gillette Stadium 2016. Four hour show, EXCELLENT production and sound quality. A real gem, check it out
I was happy to find he did this acoustic and the Born to Run one. Perfect.
This is the greatest acoustic ever done! It's pure brillance. I love you Bruce!
The best performance of a great song.
stunning song.....Bruce's best - the lyrics are mindblowing
Amazing showman, amazing song writer!!
This is why they call him the Boss!
just perfect.
Many classics has this man made but boy oh boy this is a belter! From the moment that screen door slams....❤
So wonderful!,
Greatest preformance of the greatest song of the the greatest song and dance man in history.
Magnifique ,il te remue les tripes ,avec cette voix bouleversante. On ne s'en lasse pas du Boss !!
This performance has always stuck with me, since I was kid. Really opened my eyes to his brilliance.
From of all the live versions of Thunder Road this one of my absolute number ones□
For me this song is one of the most best songs ever by Mr Springsteen, it gives me nostalgia. Also this version is one of the best and the key gives me goose bumps. It almost give me tears when I hear it. 🎤🎸🎼🎵🎶⏳❤🇸🇪😢☺️
This man is truly amazing
He certainly is!! Long live the Boss!!
Beautiful! Just beautiful music!
Such a legend. I'm a fan forever. I got to see him 5 times already including on Broadway. :) If you get the chance to go, go! It's so incredible.
Awesome performance and amazing vocals
I'm scared and thinking you ain't that young anymore Bruce...stay young and forever free....!

Lost my wings in '84. Relive the hot summer nights racing on my HD. Every time I hear this song. It was called living.
Thunder Road, my favourite song. So happy and privileged that I got to see him on his last uk your. An absolute legend and my all time favourite musician! I love you Boss!
check out my cover
me too i like him, he brings us a special dramatic touch into our souls, i like human touch a lot, i cant sleep without playing human touch, cause it is true eveyone needs a human touch in life, human touch is the end of problems and troubles in life, i sing human touch eveyday
How on earth is this garbage your favorite song. Christ on cocaine, you need to listen to better music
Ignore Dallas, his taste in music must be atrocious if he can't appreciate such a fantastic song. The lyrical content of Bruce is still unmatched by any artist to this day he paints a story with his music and you can just get lost in it
@@dallasburns7388 if you are not a fan, then why are you here? Keep your negative comments to yourself!! And how dare you call a classic like Thunder Road garbage?? You're an idiot!!
definitely the best live version of this song, the vocal delivery and the keyboard, from who I think is Roy bittan but can’t tell, really sets this version apart.
My favourite ! Beautiful version !
Absolutely fantastic I think this is the best tune Bruce ever done it so good he is so in control love him to bits you are the boss larrysullivan in London x
No better song. Invokes emotion every time
this song......Is amazing
Awesome xoxo ❤
Bruce Springsteen is amazing! I grew up listening to his music. Talent beyond words.
Take care Bruce.
Magic words for such a magic voice
Thunder Road no es "sólo" la canción de mi vida...
Me la cambió...
Lo hizo en el momento justo, clave...
It's been a long road, and an incredibly beautiful one. Thank you, Bruce!
