Melissa/Missy and I were friends, in Leavenworth, when we were both 15. We were in the same performance group, the same youth group, and we were did "Godspell" together - she played lead-guitar, and I played the "floozy" character ... SO much fun! We knew, then, that she was going places. I got to see her again, 3 years ago, when she played at the Oregon State Fair ... I got to invite several of my children to meet back-stage, prior to the show. She's as real as she seems to be. Pure gold heart.
Bruce is a legend. We used to drive into the middle of no where and lie in a field and smoke a joint. We put his music up loud and watched the stars and all giggled. Good times. 20 odd years ago, when life was less complicated and we all had feelings.
In 50 years time....some young kids will find this video and say "Holy shit.....that is good.." then they'll look for more of the same....this music never dies
Listening in 2018, brings nostalgia of youth back to me. Bruce had done a great show in Netflix where he filled in the context of these songs, The Boss and his songs never dies.
Love that purist of pleasures on what is one of the most beautifully written songs of all time. My daughter came to me and said sing that lie lie song and hold me like a baby when she was 5 that song was The Boxer that was our lullaby so this made me smile like my face would split
I’m 22, and just got into Bruce Springsteen a month or two ago, and since I don’t think I’ve really listened to anything else. I can’t stop. I would have loved being around back when he was first out...my peers don’t know this magic
Carolina - start with his first album and work your way through them. Born to run is his masterpiece imho, one of the great albums of the 20th century. I have it on CD (remaster, original pressing), on LP (2 x 45 rpm half speed masters and a standard master) and love it to bits.

Oh my god, how did I not know this existed??? One of Melissa's albums got me through a horrible breakup in 1991, and I saw Bruce (finally!) in 1985...these 2 together, and this song, oh my god, got chills 😍
This is my favorite Bruce song of all time. I cannot tell you how many times I have put in on full blast with the liner notes and sung this song as loud as I could with tears streaming down my face. This is a song about youth and the great journey ahead but as an older man, it is also about the journey taken and just how special it is to have such a gorgeous song to bookend a life well lived.
I have a 7 yr old daughter. Her mother, my wife, sings to her each night as she falls asleep. My wife went on a business trip, so I was obviously put in charge of getting my daughter to bed. For three consecutive nights I softly sang "Thunder Road" in its entirety to my daughter as she slowly fell asleep. When my wife returned from her trip, the first morning back while eating breakfast, my wife asked my daughter "Did Daddy sing to you at night to help you fall asleep?" My daughter replied; "No". He read some poem about a girl named Mary who wanted to run away from home because she wasn't happy and thought it would be better somewhere else" A 7 yrs old's interpretation of "Thunder Road". Brought a tear to my eye, but that's exactly what it is ...poetry.
That's absolutely beautiful, thankyou for sharing! Like for listeners who know the words and sing along to it they might just be words, but your daughter is one of those amazing ones who really listens and tries to understand. She'll be a good leader one day.
This was an unbelievably AWESOME blend of two excellent voices / harmonies by two of the very best singers. Thank you for this amazing rendition of one of the best songs ever.
What a version of one of the greatest story songs ever written, everyone should have at least one "roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair" feeling in their lives x
There are a couple of even more, equally meaningful lines in this song. They paint a full canvas of the tremendious diverse and challenging life - the American/western life-style, a structure, I can still identify with today. They are about all the Drama, risks, courage, desires and determination, that does envelope itself tightly around the tough process of 'growing up and making a living in small-town US'. Its one more powerful ballade by Springsteen - - - texting about rather sad and desperate scenes, --> but in the end these songs rather seem to empower us more and accept that struggle and take up the challenge ... its ".. no time for loosers we pulling out to win!" It s indeed a song from a different time - no 'woke wise-cracking' or 'stylish Tik-Tok show off' come here into play. Rather leave me behind with a sad nostalgic feeling of the old times of 🎵"Those were the Days of '69 🎵". 😢
One of my favorite Springsteen songs and this duet is simply magic. The last time I saw Bruce in concert was in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany in 2016. Bruce came out alone with his acoustic guitar for the 2nd encore and played this song. Just Bruce and 65,000 fans, yet it felt like he was singing this song only to each an every one of us. It brought tears to my eyes.
My first "Bruce" concert was in Munich Germany, 1985 'BORN IN THE USA ' Tour...... Special Thanks to my Brother-in-law Barry for turning me on to BRUCE.... and taking me to my first Springsteen concert, for my Birthday....
So cute when Melissa leaves him hanging a beat late on “so Mary climb in” and he wants to laugh so hard but they have to finish. Classic. Love them both.
My dad introduced me to Bruce’s music when I was young and it took me until I was about 12 to truly appreciate his music . I’m 19 now and I’m still listening.
Melissa tells a story about that line in one of her CZcams videos. She specifically asked Bruce if she could sing that line as she had just come out and thought the line was symbolic. Bruce agreed, but then during the first take, which was perfect, she forgot to come in, so they had to re-record the song. If you watch the video, she almost forgets to come in again, and Bruce looks at her and smiles, and then she leans over and makes a comment about how she almost messed up again.
@@robbbbbie12 she actually forgets in this version too, but realizes it when he looks at her. She comes in late, and he holds the chord (I don’t know what note it is) until the word “climb”, where he changes notes again. I think the emphasis when he changes is his reaction a la “that’s it”. In my opinion, that actually makes this even better, because it shows two masters making music in real time. It’s those small hiccups that make live music awesome!
Bruce write songs with lyrics that have something to say about the human condition, about the roller coaster life can be, he’s more then a musician and troubadour he’s a poet although he’s to humble to admit, like Bob he also deserves a Nobel prize.
Well I have been listening to Thunder Road for over 30 years and I still think its the greatest song ever written. Its going to be the last song before they close the lid!

I’ve been a fan of Bruce Springsteen since I was a teenager and he never fails to reduce me to tears with the sheer emotional brilliance of his work. Thank you Bruce..

My girlfriend is due to have twins this coming spring...so weird that I’d stumble upon your comment at this time. Hope all is well with you and your family
