quite an eye opening review for me. I currently have the SU-9 and I love it. Thank you for this review.
you welcome!
Thanks Ryan, very informative.
you welcome :D
I had the SMSL SU-9 and it was just too "in my face" and the treble was just too much. So, I sent it back and ordered the Topping D30Pro which has the same Cirrus Logic chips (4). The D30Pro had a more relaxed listen with better sound staging. Vocals were a step back compared to the the SU-9. I would be willing to bet that if you listened to the Octo for a month or so solid, then went back to the SU-9, you might understand that the forwardness of the ESS chips, while initially captivating, dynamic, and sensational sounding, is exhausting after 30 minutes. That's just my take. Personally, I might find that I like the Octo based on my previous experience with the Cirrus Logic Chips. But I agree it sort of sounds like Cirrus Logic DACs sometimes sound like they're run through a tube amp. Oh, also, I was coming from a iDSD BL with the Burr Brown chips and I had that for 3 years prior. My head was used to that Burr Brown sound. So ESS chips were just a bridge too far for me.
su-9 isn’t even that forward the treble is actually more warm if anything, the d90se is more forward
@@ryanhostudio I think my favorite is the Burr Brown Sound and then I should go straight to R2R. I should just skip DS DACs
@@shawnpwatsons1 i also think the burbrown sounds better than octo, i have the ifi diablo 2 here and its a better dac too
oh wow.@@ryanhostudio
Superb review. Very honest and straightforward. Thank you 😊
you welcome!
Exactly what I thought!!!!!!!!!!!! Spot on review.
glad you agree!
Great review. I wonder if you might like the smsl DO400. I'm currently using the DO400 as my DAC and the Topping A70 pro as my amplifier. Great stuff.
haven’t tried that one yet
I was wondering if the original SMSL SU-9 also has a black background like the SMSL SU-9 Ultra. I heard the Ultra model has a noteworthy black background, but it uses the AKM chip, instead of the ESS chip like the original model and Pro model.
my dad has the smsl su-9 pro and i noticed a pretty perceptive improvement in sound quality, for me it’s really the less warm and treble tuning becomes a bit more neutral
@ryanhostudio ah, have you or your dad tried listening to the Pro with sensitive iems? I'm curious about the noise floor.
@@radiofreealbemuth i don’t hear noise floor, noise floor is basically always the amplifier unless someone designed a dac that badly….
@@ryanhostudio Ah, I see. I'm still a newbie, so I'm trying to figure out how everything affects the final sound. i got a Topping L70 amplifier and tried connecting it to the Xduoo XD05 Pro, which is a portable dac amp. The XD05 Pro has a line out, so I tried connecting it to the L70 amp to see what effect it would have, and I was surprised at how dramatically the presentation changed. the vocals sounded veiled, instruments sounded dull, dynamics sounded blunted. and the presentation lacked holography/soundstage depth of the XD05 Pro in isolation. i was curious how much of this bad synergy was the doing of the XD05 Pro, or the L70. I don't know if the L70 has a way of flattening the sound presentation of the receiving DAC, or if the XD05 Pro's line output just isn't as good as its headphone output. i guess i won't know until i pair the XD05 Pro with another amplifier and the L70 with a standalone DAC
