  • Hello and welcome to Rugby Player Reacts!
Rugby Player Reacts is a CZcams channel telling the story of Jacob McDonald, a New Zealand born rugby player and lifetime sports fan taking on the juggernaut that is American Football, among other things.
On this channel you will see a massive range of videos with the majority falling under a title of either "Rugby Player Reacts", "Rugby Player Receives", "Rugby Player Tries" or "Rugby Player Trains For American Football".
The premise of this channel has always been the journey of a rugby player attempting to transition across to American Football with no prior knowledge of the game. The goal was and still is to learn as much as possible along the way and bridge these two amazing sports together through making CZcams videos.
Each video published on this channel has been meticulously categorised into playlists to make navigation easier so feel free to check them all out and find your favorite individual player, team or sport!

If the NBA, NFL, MLB athletes didn't play these sports and went into track instead, the entire Olympic record book would be rewritten.

Despite him being listed as 6' 6”, MJ was actually a hair under 6'5” (or 195 cm - the whole Dream Team was measured anew for the Olympics in 1992). 48” vert was obviously his max running vert at the beginning of his NBA career.
For a two way player such as himself, even though being an exceptional top athlete, it is impossible to max jump (or even close to max jump) on a regular basis, when he spends about a half his court time in a defensive “squat” position.
There's one of his very first NBA dunks, where he catches a two handed alley oop, what seems to be eye level with the rim. During his last free throw dunk at the 88 Dunk Contest, at the peak of his jump, his forhead is above the rim (you can find a picture of it - the bottom of the balcony in the background provides a straight line going through the center of the rim - back to front and touches the top of his eyebrowes) that gives about 46" vert.
Also, altough we can't get film evidence of his combine, we can see his (close enough to) standing vertical just seconds after Bulls won their 6th championship. 35 years old, after a grueling season + playoffs + finals - clock runs down, everybody turns away from the rim and MJ suddenly jumps up high enough that he could sit on 6' 4” Jeff Hornacek's shoulder (he is right next to him); and that gives him 30” standing vert at the end of his Bulls years.
Professional dunkers in their primes nowadays (Jordan Kilganon, Isaiah Rivera and co.) have about 40”-42” standing verts and they do nothing else, “just” train for the vert and dunking (they're all absolutely insane athletes). So I'm sure young MJ was right there too jumping-wise, even without the specialised training.
He cought the rim on a few attemted dunks, some are hilarious, some are even epic.
Some of my favourite MJ dunks: on Mel Turpin, on Zo, almost free throw line on Laimbeer, on Ewing, around the block on Lakers (in the finals-assist from Scottie) and drop step alley oop on Drexler (in the finals).
Shame we don't have more footage from his young years.

    Great reaction.
MJ didn't start the"Rock the Cradle" dunk, NBA players like Larry Nance Sr. were doing it while MJ was still in college, only, MJ made it better by starting his jump further away from the basket. The dunk that MJ began, but has never been duplicated, was the "Kiss the Rim" dunk, where he'd lean his body toward the basket at a 45-degree angle to mimic the act of flying.
Not only was he gifted with a 48" verticle, but his hands & wingspan were also much bigger than the average man of his height, and he could palm a basketball much like we can palm a grapefruit. The combination of his physical attributes, the fundamentals, and his mindset, makes him the greatest 1-on-1, and/or 1-on-5 player that ever played the game. He's the G.O.A.T. for these reasons, but as a team player, Larry Bird is at the top of my list.

Thanks to a terrible font choice what you should have read when you looked up his vertical is "His AIRNESS" as in the one who jumps in the air

Julius Erving invented the rock the cradle dunk 10 years before Jordan. Search for - Dr. J. dunking on giants for seven minutes straight

Look up the Philadelphia 76ers and Dr J. That's Julius Erwin for those not in the know. My husband says that he had great hang time. This was back in the 70s.

He had huge hands also which allowed him to swing the ball around like it was a softball. He was fun to watch! OH, and it's Julius Erving, not Erwin. :)
