Fire alarm goes off at Virginia Beach Convention Center!

  • Was at the 2013 Auto Show checking out Chevy's newest lineup of cars, when all of a sudden I heard a loud siren, followed by flashing strobes, and a computerized voice saying to walk to the nearest exit. Turns out the fire alarm was going off! Of course, everyone was smart and evacuated the building (I have seen some videos on CZcams where alarms go off and people pay no attention to it, so it was good to see people being smart and doing what they were supposed to do). This was definitely not expected. After standing outside for a good 15 or so minutes, the all-clear was given and everyone went back inside.
    Check out those two hot girls towards the end! LOL

    One thing I love about this video, is that people actually stopped to hear what the speakers were saying and they evacuated the building like they should. I always love to see when systems do their job and people respond to them by following the directions!

    Where my dad used to work two of the buildings he was in charge of had Voice capable Simplex 2001's with the Simplex LifeAlarm speaker/strobes but they were the old triangular strobes that said "FIRE" on them. Both buildings played this same message. It did the other style of the whoop tone where it would whoop then stop for a couple of seconds then whoop again. It also did the sound twice then the message played three times then kept whooping.

      @tmtmahowald Před 8 lety +6

      +Gary Beltz I don't know where you went to school but every single school that I attended or have worked at always told us to use the nearest exit. That would be putting people in danger if there was an actual fire cause the way they came from could become blocked within seconds and making those people trapped. And most public buildings have signs on walls all throughout the building telling people to use the nearest exit if there is an emergency. Generally primary entrance should not be used as emergency exit cause emergency personal prefer to use it without a big herd of people rushing towards them causing chaos and getting in there way when trying to put the fire out if there is one.

      I find it somewhat stupid to play an air raid siren on the fire alarm. It seems counterproductive. An air raid siren means to go inside and stay inside. A fire alarm means get out and stay out. What if people think it's a tornado coming and stay in the burning building. Also it seems like it plays for too long. Play a few whoops and start playing the voice message. That's a long time for you to not know what the alarm is for, especially when it's a fire

  • @VArailfan89
    @VArailfan89  Před 11 lety +5

  • @GaryBeltz
    @GaryBeltz Před 11 lety +5

    Does your system play the same message as this one did? And it all depends on how the contractors program the system. I assume your Fire Alarm DACT (Phone Dialer) is either programmed not to go off until you push the button you mentioned or it calls a central security office in your convention center and YOU have to call the FD? Most of the time the systems call the FD directly or the monitoring company who in turn calls the FD. It has nothing to do with it being a convention center.

The fire department is literally right down the street, it didn't take them long at all to show up.

There could be a real situation somewhere else where people may be in danger. Continued to Gary Beltz: The Cruze only has 138 horsepower, two less horsepower than the Galant, but the turbo definitely gives it a kick. She had never driven a car with a turbo before, at least that I'm aware of anyway. I have a review video of the Chevrolet Cruze LT that she rented if you're interested. It's in the style of CZcams user saabkyle04. Don't know if you've heard of him, but he reviews cars. Lives in NC. I borrowed his style to do the review. :)

    Could be. I don't know too much about that kind of stuff, I do know that it was a Simplex 4903-9351 or something similar. There is a Wheelock speaker/strobe near the elevators too for some reason.

    When the fire alarm gets triggered it calls the FD directly or the monitoring company who in turn calls them.

    Where were the convention center staff? I supervise staff in a convention center, and I can guarantee that this would never happen under my watch. We have specific protocol in place to ensure false alarms are quickly taken care of and in case of an evac, procedures to direct attendees to waiting areas, and informing them of the situation. We also have our system programmed to not play the evac message until we confirm the alarm and push a button on the panel, it just whoops until we do.

    If you're talking about the one who was in the white jacket carrying the red recycled bag getting out of the orange Chevrolet Cruze, that was my mom lol. No, that's not her car. She drives an 03 Mitsubishi Galant that's on its third transmission. That's right, I said THIRD. She's eventually gonna have to get another one though. She did drive a rental Cruze when her Galant was being serviced. I'm glad I let her know it had a turbo, that thing had some kind of torque, I'll tell you that.

    Most people, in an emergency, try to exit through the same doors which they entered instead of taking the nearest exit.

    • @GaryBeltz
      @GaryBeltz Před 9 lety

      Well they always instructed you in fire safety courses even clear back in elementary school that you should always use the primary exit first in most cases it's the main entrance to the house or building. You should always FAMILIARIZE yourself with the locations of all of the exits but unless there is fire or other dangerous situations at the primary exits use them.
