Fire alarm goes off at Virginia Beach Convention Center!

- Was at the 2013 Auto Show checking out Chevy's newest lineup of cars, when all of a sudden I heard a loud siren, followed by flashing strobes, and a computerized voice saying to walk to the nearest exit. Turns out the fire alarm was going off! Of course, everyone was smart and evacuated the building (I have seen some videos on CZcams where alarms go off and people pay no attention to it, so it was good to see people being smart and doing what they were supposed to do). This was definitely not expected. After standing outside for a good 15 or so minutes, the all-clear was given and everyone went back inside.
Check out those two hot girls towards the end! LOL
Recorded 1.12.2013 - Krátké a kreslené filmy
One thing I love about this video, is that people actually stopped to hear what the speakers were saying and they evacuated the building like they should. I always love to see when systems do their job and people respond to them by following the directions!
Your a nerd
They stopped to listen because the voice evac was loud enough to carry over the background noise
Yep yep. As a Fire Alarm Enthusiast I hear
Simplex Voice Evac doing its job as a fire alarm. And I respect that😉🤟👍
@@JordanRRNotFounded ok
Those Simplex speaker strobes are probably set to a high wattage setting in that large room.
Yeah that’s why the video was so loud. Plus, there were like a thousand of them in there anyway.
Where my dad used to work two of the buildings he was in charge of had Voice capable Simplex 2001's with the Simplex LifeAlarm speaker/strobes but they were the old triangular strobes that said "FIRE" on them. Both buildings played this same message. It did the other style of the whoop tone where it would whoop then stop for a couple of seconds then whoop again. It also did the sound twice then the message played three times then kept whooping.
Lyrics:
Hook:
Attention x3
Intro:
An emergency has been reported
Chorus:
All occupants walk to the
Nearest stairway exit
And walk down to your
Assigned reentry floor
Or main lobby
Outro:
Do not use the elevators
Walk to the nearest stairway x2
Love how you make the message seem like a song lol
Had the same experience about 3 years ago at the Richmond Convention Center at a car show too. Was with my dad and a couple of friends from church. My friends' dad who is a firefighter at a fire station not too far away from the Richmond Convention Center, said that there was a fire in the kitchen.
I used to watch this video in 2015 (When I was 6). I liked it for some reason. Here I am a few years later and this video is pretty nostalgic to me. 😁
Attention...get in a car and drive to the nearest exit...

That fire alarm siren sounds like A siren if an attack was happening.
Fantech0104 It sounds exactly like the alarm at great wolf lodge

1:00 - I can't help but notice that the people near the Cadillac sign (or whatever it's called) on the left side doesn't seem to realize that the fire alarm is going off, or even the fact that almost everyone around them are evacuating.
I love those alarms and the whoop tone with the voice evac
Wow, I'm surprised! I have yet to hear a voice evac system that you can actually understand what is being said over the ambient noise level in the building. I recognized the Simplex message right away, but I was surprised that you could understand what it was telling you. Nice video!
I had been in that building many times including when my high school graduation was held in 2007 and never thought I'd hear the fire alarm system. But that day I heard it. Twice in fact! It went off again when we got in the building!
It was tied in to a PA system it sounds like that why it was so clear to hear!!
Yep. Notice that everyone listened to it? That's why
No problem, really glad you enjoyed the video. I normally record trains, watching trains are my main hobby, but this was so unique, I had to get it on video. :) According to my neighbor across the street, this false alarm thing has happened before. She was there one time, and it happened a year or two ago when having a meeting there with somebody she works with at school. I guess it's just a freak event that happens from time to time. All electronic equipment malfunctions sometimes lol. :P
THAT SOUNDS LIKE A AIR SIREN IM NOT SURE ITS A SIMPLEX THAT THING IS LOUD IM USING MY HEADPHONES ITS REALLY LOUD ITS HURTING MY EAR WITH THE SIREN I I- CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE
I love the continuous siren tone
They really were! No screaming, knocking other people down, nothing like you see in movies sometimes lol. I was very impressed, because I've seen some other videos on here where the fire alarm is going off, and people just sit there, oblivious to the fact that they could be burned alive. It was great to see people doing the right thing when the fire alarm was going off.
Awesome simplex 4100U fire alarm system with simplex truealert speaker strobes! Has the old-fashioned voice evacuation message too
Did someone pull the fire alarm or was there a fire? I'm impressed by how everyone behaved during that situation. It reminds me of when I was in high school.
He said that there was an issue with the computer system and it accidentally triggered the entire fire alarm system.
They really were calm. I was very impressed!
now that was a calm and orderly group of people!
another example of how people react in emergencies. Everyone went to the same exit, even though they're scattered through out the building. It's a deadly instinct that people act on.
+Stealthmuiz Don't know what you're complaining about.I've seen videos where they've ignoring alarms.
+MIKECNW however there was a fire exit about 5-6meters from where he was standing but he followed everyone else to the other side of the building
+Person 666 You are generally told in school to use the primary entrance for exiting during a fire unless there is smoke, fire, or other debris blocking it.
Gary Beltz Yeah but if you think about it logically, fire can spread pretty fast. Logically if there was fire ABOVE the lobby and the roof fell down and killed everyone in the lobby, everyone should have used the correct exits
+Gary Beltz I don't know where you went to school but every single school that I attended or have worked at always told us to use the nearest exit. That would be putting people in danger if there was an actual fire cause the way they came from could become blocked within seconds and making those people trapped. And most public buildings have signs on walls all throughout the building telling people to use the nearest exit if there is an emergency. Generally primary entrance should not be used as emergency exit cause emergency personal prefer to use it without a big herd of people rushing towards them causing chaos and getting in there way when trying to put the fire out if there is one.
Simplex 4100u Fire Alarm panel with voice evacuation set to slow whoop. The alarm sound started then the voice evac played three times then it went into slow whoop. This is one way that they can be programmed.
i like how the voice and the alarm are both loud enough to get everyone's attention but aren't startling like horn strobes are.
They really were calm, I was definitely impressed!

That Would Be a Good Alarm Clock.
Bet that would be one alarm clock that got smashed the first time it was used LMAO!
2:03 - the old fart perusing through pamphlets like any ordinary day.
Wow, I've never heard one where the siren continues going on and on and on and....
kfc28371ify This is called the Simplex Voice Evac.
True but it's a very odd simplex voice evac. Usually the whooo doesn't last as long. Ususally you would have the evacuation message repeat a few more times after a couple minutes of whoop.
My schools alarm does that it does the siren at the beginning then does. 3x voice evac message then back to the siren
I like it
I find it somewhat stupid to play an air raid siren on the fire alarm. It seems counterproductive. An air raid siren means to go inside and stay inside. A fire alarm means get out and stay out. What if people think it's a tornado coming and stay in the burning building. Also it seems like it plays for too long. Play a few whoops and start playing the voice message. That's a long time for you to not know what the alarm is for, especially when it's a fire
If it were continuous, it would've wailed and stayed steady. This was actually discontinuous, but I know what you mean, it did sound like a tornado siren. It also kinda reminded me of a submarine "dive" alarm.
I know they are. They were a LOT louder than I expected them to be. Not deafening but still pretty loud. Got my attention, that's for sure!
Does your system play the same message as this one did? And it all depends on how the contractors program the system. I assume your Fire Alarm DACT (Phone Dialer) is either programmed not to go off until you push the button you mentioned or it calls a central security office in your convention center and YOU have to call the FD? Most of the time the systems call the FD directly or the monitoring company who in turn calls the FD. It has nothing to do with it being a convention center.
I like how it talks to you nicely, then just goes ham with sound.
I love this comment lol that is so true.
so imagine hearing a sound similar to that every month lol
Why? Does your school have these?
@@Oof-zl6lt my old middle school had them, it sounded scary if I’m being honest. Now some of the buildings at my college have it. PTSD😂
The sense of urgency killed me
That would be me haha. I was the cameraman. They were two really hot cheerleaders from the Washington Redskins. Now that I look back, I really wish I had gotten my picture taken with them. :/

You were buffing dude. Awesome! I'm impressed with your knowledge of fire alarm systems.
+Fire &Train Buff I sure was, and didn't even realize it at the time! Thanks for the compliment!
+Fire &Train Buff Also, am I the only one that thinks the alarm tone on this sounds like a submarine dive alarm? lol
Yes, now that you mention it, it does. DIVE DIVE DIVE!
Fire &Train Buff LOL I knew I wasn't the only one!
+Class J Video Productions I think it sounds more like an air raid siren, as you mentioned. Lol
I like how it echoes throughout the building
Yeah it's a unique sound for sure! It wasn't particularly loud but it did echo a lot
@@VArailfan89 was the system tied to a PA ? it seems to be especially in the lobby or is it just the good acoustics?
That happened to me once, no joke, I was at the mall and the power went out but it turned back on like a second later and then the fire alarm went off but it was a simplex horn strobe not a speaker strobe so it was LOUD. the fire alarms were even going off in the parking garage, I'm not sure if the fire department got called but I'm pretty sure it did since most public place's fire alarm auto-call the fire department.
just hope that if I'm ever in a situation where there is a fire, that everyone acts like this..hopefully they will, but when people see and smell smoke, it can set off the panic, 'fight or flight' instinct..
Actually, the fire alarms don’t call the fire dept themselves. Monitoring that monitors the system calls them.
That is what Lucina's Teacher, Melanie Collins, said: "Stand! We are getting ready for a mandatory fire drill as usual. So stand! Line up single file! No talking or electronic noise unless you have headphones on." She and Marth went to the 2013 Auto Show as a class from South Darwin High School, South Darwin, Florida. Then she takes roll and accounts every student in her class during the trip.
Who's Lucina?
No, it was a computer malfunction on the fire alarm system.
Wow. That is a very good reaction to a fire alarm. Everybody walked quickly but calmly to the nearest exit! I have seen vids where people are so bad they get burned because they are bottlenecked at the door!
Computer malfunction. My neighbor across the street witnessed this here one other time, so I guess it does happen occasionally.
This is why fire drills are good because people actually remember what to do lol. Great video and such an exiting day I must say 😅
This might be the first video of a fire alarm going off and people inside the building are actually leaving the building like your supposed to be doing when the fire alarm is going off I have seen videos where the fire alarm is going off at Walmart or somewhere else and people just ignore it and continue shopping.
1:15 That Sucks That After The Voice Message You Had To Walk Outside Hearing The Alarm Tone Siren Until You Got Outside.
Fire alarm going off. Everyone standing around like "what do I do?" Ever been in a school fire drill?

My brain when I remember the math test is today
That's what they are! Let it be noted, though, that there are a couple of Wheelock speaker/strokes in the building as well, and that the speaker plays the message pre-recorded. A Simplex speaker/strobe can play a Wheelock message, and a Wheelock speaker/strobe can play a Simplex message. LOL :P
Those are Simplex TrueAlert speaker/strobes seen in the video aside from the ones you mentioned.

Yeah, that's true. Plus there were several alarms installed in there. I've heard louder, but they were still pretty loud...
Ha! Wow. Well I definitely did not expect this, figured it was worth it, what with everyone having to evacuate the building and the fire truck coming down the street with sirens blaring and horns honking lol. That's funny that we've both had experiences with false fire alarms during car shows haha.
I think it's cool how the fire truck has the spinning, pinwheel like thing on the front.
I'm sure the department wasn't too happy to be there, especially since it was not an actual fire!
+kfc28371ify the thing on the front of the fire truck is called a Roto-Ray light
+Dakota Hoes Thanks!
+kfc28371ify no problem when I first watched this video I didn't know what it was ether
I doubt it, better safe than sorry.
Dubs Sorry for the late reply
Yeah, that's true. Good to know that the fire. department is able to respond just in case an emergency took place.
1:16 the real action begins
They were around. Some people were trying to enter the convention center, and the staff blocked the entrance and said, "You can't come in here." They were doing the right thing. :) When the fire alarm sounds, false alarm or otherwise, it automatically calls the fire department, hence the reason the fire truck was flying down the street with the lights flashing and siren screaming full blast lol. The fire department is literally right down the street, it didn't take them long at all to show up.
How come you said lol. I understand it was a system malfunction, but don’t you think it feels annoying for a firefighter to respond to a false alarm? There could be a real situation somewhere else where people may be in danger. It wouldn’t bother me having them respond two or three times a year, but they really need to fix the system so that emergency services are available for a true emergency.
I'm more of a Ford type of guy, since my first car was a 1996 Thunderbird, but if I were to get a Chevy, it would be the Cruze or the Camaro (the older ones from 1993-2002, not the newer ones!)
when the alarm goes off, pulled or otherwise, it calls the fire department automatically.
Oh, I'd say maybe 15-20 minutes tops. Don't remember exactly. It was like a typical fire drill at school lol. :)
It did sound like a tornado warning.
I remember experiencing a real fire when I was at my school
Simplex TrueAlert voice evacuation.
Continued to Gary Beltz: The Cruze only has 138 horsepower, two less horsepower than the Galant, but the turbo definitely gives it a kick. She had never driven a car with a turbo before, at least that I'm aware of anyway. I have a review video of the Chevrolet Cruze LT that she rented if you're interested. It's in the style of CZcams user saabkyle04. Don't know if you've heard of him, but he reviews cars. Lives in NC. I borrowed his style to do the review. :)
Could be. I don't know too much about that kind of stuff, I do know that it was a Simplex 4903-9351 or something similar. There is a Wheelock speaker/strobe near the elevators too for some reason.
When the fire alarm gets triggered it calls the FD directly or the monitoring company who in turn calls them.
Where were the convention center staff? I supervise staff in a convention center, and I can guarantee that this would never happen under my watch. We have specific protocol in place to ensure false alarms are quickly taken care of and in case of an evac, procedures to direct attendees to waiting areas, and informing them of the situation. We also have our system programmed to not play the evac message until we confirm the alarm and push a button on the panel, it just whoops until we do.
That is the way it should be!
How come after leaving the building, you had to cross the street? when you got outside, how did you know you had to cross the street? Why is the sidewalk surrounding the building closed?
That's the exact same voice, words, and rising tone siren as in my dorm. I remember very well because the do the fire drills at a LOVELY 6AM
+EGL24Xx Oh wow...6 AM...I'd be pissed!
6Am is too early to be testing the alarm system
+Jared Heyde they do it at that time because they can be fairly certain that most people are back at the time
+The Sauber C9 Guy Animations twice per semester
They had to. The VBFD had to check everything out to make sure the building wasn't burning haha.
Did the local news station know about the fire alarm going off at VA beach convention center?
Since there wasn't an actual fire doubt it fire alarms go off all the time the media only reports on tragic events or very special good events.
I can cleary tell that the panel was the 4100ES Because I realize the tone and the constant Whoop.
Same!!
the mall in my city has a 4100, I'm not sure which 4100 it is, regular, u, or es, but it's code three at the mall
Everyone evacuated in a calm and orderly fashion.
My middle school had Wheelock MTs with the "horn" tone, as well as some Simplex 4050s. I HATED THEM! Way too loud!
Lucky, mine has est genesis’s and integrities, now I like integrities but they’re in the courtyards so I never hear them
If you mean the one I was next to, 2013 Chevrolet Cruze.
How long were you out there for
Strobes are required for deaf people by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) so if you don't like strobes go to Canada or some other country.
Gary Beltz Mexico also has strobes
What car did you have there
In SG in my condo the alarm went off and I was wearing clothes so rushed out and to the exit running
what made the alarm go off
I don't know how many exactly, but it was a lot. If I could choose a Chevy, it'd be the Cruze or Sonic. Or maybe the Impala. :)
And because of it going of i don’t know if anyone ever wants go go back in the building when the fire department secure it and um yea only some or everyone will go back in the building and all of the alarms are going of at the same time
r there a few strobes flashing out of synch?
LTCWM1 No. Cameras refresh rate can’t video how fast the lights flash, so it looks out of sync.
If you're talking about the one who was in the white jacket carrying the red recycled bag getting out of the orange Chevrolet Cruze, that was my mom lol. No, that's not her car. She drives an 03 Mitsubishi Galant that's on its third transmission. That's right, I said THIRD. She's eventually gonna have to get another one though. She did drive a rental Cruze when her Galant was being serviced. I'm glad I let her know it had a turbo, that thing had some kind of torque, I'll tell you that.
Most people, in an emergency, try to exit through the same doors which they entered instead of taking the nearest exit.
Well they always instructed you in fire safety courses even clear back in elementary school that you should always use the primary exit first in most cases it's the main entrance to the house or building. You should always FAMILIARIZE yourself with the locations of all of the exits but unless there is fire or other dangerous situations at the primary exits use them.
