Aside from a few fans booing the national anthems, the attitude of most of the fans was to think they had already won even before the match started, just because England have a strong team and were playing at home (plus many thought that victory was obvious because the team hadn't reached the final of an international tournament for 55 years). If this doesn't mean arrogance, it means at least underestimating the opponent, and with a team like Italy it isn't really advisable to do so, I would say. Nothing strange, then, that the "it's coming home" chorus was perceived as a demonstration of arrogance and that all of Europe ended up cheering against you. (By the way, a little advice: if I were you I wouldn't sing that chorus anymore, because in addition to bringing bad luck it also exposes you to public mockery when you lose, and perhaps also puts a little unnecessary pressure on the team.)
England fans are never confident about the team, quite the opposite, England fans are among the most pessimistic and fatalistic fans. That’s what 55 years of pain does to you.
What you perceive as confidence/arrogance is actually a desperate hope and yearning.

For people like yourself I feel sorry, you both seem really decent guys and I am sure this would have meant the world to you.
But I rejoice at the idea that this would be so painful for all those arrogant, cocky uncivilised fans who booed anthems, trashed the city and behaved like animals.
I also rejoice because I am Italian. So there is that too.

I do have to wonder, how many English fans honesty thought they would win the Euros? I mean the amount that thought it was in the bag even before kick off is quite shocking considering they didn't really play a top side until the final lol, which by the way is a repeat of the last world cup, an easy route but the moment England played a tough side, they got knocked out.
In any case, Italy did the world a massive favour here because hardly anyone wanted England to win, even Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland didn't want England to win which begs the question why which is easy to answer.
Some French and German's didn't want Italy to win cause they are rival's that don't want Italy to have more trophies than them while England had 4 less than Italy before this final

Non giudico un popolo intero per il comportamento di alcuni, la maggior parte di quelli che ho visto a fine partita erano con le lacrime agli occhi e non a caccia di italiani.

Apart from the direct clashes with Italy - I am not a fan but a football lover - in all football championships I hoped that England would win in the end. Next year I will do the same for the World Cup. However, this victory was very important for us Italians. More than you, we are a people who need to recover unity, a sense of community and trust in the future. For some months the wind has changed here and I believe that this has weighed on the confidence and tranquility with which our national team played for the whole tournament but also before. If I can say - from what we breathed here - you have been too sure of the results and this has created too much tension. Then there is - sorry - the choice of Brexit. I know many Italians who work in England and who love the United Kingdom out of all proportion but they tell me that they have felt mistrust of them for some time now.
