      @@SuperBartet the 'batteries' are running close to 90% capacity at 2000 cycles or 4000 for lipo. Million mile battery is coming or close to here already. Then they get pulled out and 2nd use life in home or commercial energy storage, so not sure what world you're in actually.

    Politicians and car makers seem to have a hearing problem. *THEY* don't decide what cars get bought *WE DO* They can bang on about EVs all they like but in the former case we vote them out and in the latter case we drive them bankrupt due to no sales.

      Made my choice last week. The model for 2025 I wanted comes only in hybrid. I purchased 2024 IC. I don’t believe I will eat bugs and like it.

    As the producers have told, to meet the need for electric vehicles, they should produce more copper in the next 25 years than has been produced through the whole human history. As starting a copper mine takes up to 20 years, there is no possibility to open enough mines to meet the demand. So, the lack of just copper makes it impossible to go even mostly electric. It is almost funny how nothing is realistic when it comes to Green goals...

    I notice that there is little mention of small cars like the Polo and the Up. All the electric vehicles and hybrids seem to be big (even the Golf is a huge tank compared to what it once was). I thought they were supposed to be saving the planet. What's the point if most cars are huge lumbering kilowatt hungry monstrosities and have an enormous carbon/environmental footprint just to build them in the first place?

      it's quite simple, the batteries have a very small energy density and the people want a range which is comparable to an ice car. Those reasons make the weight of the battery in the range of 500-700kilos. The large weight of the battery requires a sturdy frame to keep it and that is heavy so, the car reaches 800-900kilos just for the battery and the frame. The old polo or up were around 900-1000kg. So, building an ev as small as polo means it will have a short range making it a city car only, making an ev with long range requires it to go big to over 2000kilos. So, yeah save the planet with big disposable cars that last at most 10 years.

      @@malcolmclayton6651 they are not 20 years away, they simply cannot be reached because there is no possibility to build a battery with an energy density even close to the fuel and work at normal temperatures and be made from reasonably abundant chemical elements. The Li-ion battery is the maximum we can achieve in terms of commercial batteries and they are very close to their maximum practical energy density so there is no point to wait for anything else, it's a dead end we should limit our losses and go on another route.

    Yes well even if I wanted an EV which I do not and the infrastructure was there as supposedly it is in China I do not want to spend precious hours of my life waiting for the wretched thing to charge up. Now as for hybrids in my mind they still pose the dangers of having a large lithium-ion battery installed and whether it is charged by plug in or by regenerative braking or whatever and they are just not the answer. Finally this all depends on how the grid can cope with the sheer numbers of EV's of whatever shape or form need to draw on the available electricity.

    The lack of EV take up is not about affordability, its about reliability, safety and ease of use, BEV's don't provide any of these, compared to ICE vehicles, which have far greater reliability, ease of use and affordability, there is no argument that supports BEV's even worse, the mandates that promote BEV's are about to come to an end, it is likely this will utterly destroy the BEV market which is already very fragile.

    We do not have the charging infrastructure in the west. Nor are we doing anuyhing about it. If the western governments were really concerned for us they would be putting in national infrastructure projects the likes of which we have never seen before. But they're not. Just look at BT. It has taken them 6 years to convert just over half the country to fibre optic at a cost oF £billions. To provide electric charging all over the country would cost far more and the grid couldn't cope with it anyway. And certainly not by using wind and solar ! The whole thing is a massive MASSIVE SCAM. All they want is to limit personal freedom and by doing so gain control of our lives.

    Chinese EVs benefit from massive state subsidies, hard to compete against that, unless tariffs are imposed but Germany reluctant to go down that road, as it sells a lot of cars in China…

    Electric cars have been around since the 1900s still a flop. Here in Costa Rica we barely have enough electricity to keep the lights on at times. Yet electric cars are the answer say the politicos.

      Politics seem to define VW. Initially, it was the Peoples Car of the third reich. Then it went to war as the Kubelwagen, and provided a starting point for Dr Porsche. The Peoples Car became the best selling beetle. The VW van. The Golf. Many other iconic cars. Diesels. Enter the political narrative. We must have clean diesels! Cheat software, as we can’t really make a cheap clean diesel. Now, it must be all electric! Like it is so simple. Once again the politics have bend the technology and it’s not working - at least at affordable prices.
