February 12th, 2020 Update: Adobe has released a profile for this (and other Tamron lenses), which radically helps with processing RAW files! The lens still has a lot of distortion, but having effective profile aids helps ease the sting.
@@ruechelFrom an impartial,l independent reviewers perspective the lens distortion must be judged relative to other price comparable lenses. So with that in mind the distortion is awful and quite frankly unacceptable in a prime. As I stated in the comments section of Dustin’s tamron 24mm review post correction is not a free lunch, and will cost edge pixels, and a significant loss of fidelity. It’s a shame he and other reviewers fail to point this out.
Thank you. There are other more entertaining channels than mine, but I would like to think I'm really giving people the tools to make an informed decision.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I really liked your Samyang 85mm XP review - which lead me to buy one and I am not a happy owner of that lens. I tried to find a review about the Samyang XP 35mm F1.2 - but didn't find one - I especially liked the warm bokeh of the 85mm and I hope it is similar on the 35mm - ordered a 35mm today to find out. You never covered the 35mm f1.2 right? I was looking for your review desperately :)
Dustin thank you once again for another great video. I have watched your channel for so long. Great work. Loved every minute and you solved my barrel distortion issue for this!
Cheers, you answered my my question for me: 17-28 at 20mm has less distortion & sharper over all. I'm going with the 17-28 then. Thanks mate and awesome reviews too!
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi, thank you for this great review. So now with the lens correction profile included in Lr, is it better regarding the distortion ? Thanks in advance.
@@SebastienDevigne Yes and no. It certainly helps to have a profile, though it doesn't change the fact that the lens has unusually high levels of distortion.
Great review, tks! I just sold my Nikon DX DSLR and I am deciding about Sony a7III or 7IV, and about the lenses, I would like your opinion please. I am an enthusiast photographer and shoot more landscapes, street photography... With my Nikon, the lenses that I most used was a 18-200mm and a 10-20mm, and for the Sony, I intend to buy a Tamron 28-200 and for the wide angle, I am about to decide between the Tamron 17-28 (US$ 799) and the Tamron 20mm (US$ 249)... but their price difference is considerable. Please, what is your opinion about this "bundle" (28-200mm + 17-28mm or 20mm) and about the 17-28mm vs the 20mm? Or maybe the Tamron 28-200mm with a Sony 20mm f/1.8 (so I covered for zoom + wide and low light situations). Thank you
Thank you very much Dustin. I still have questions about distortion. I have a Sony Alpha 7 IV and there is an option to turn on distortion correction. 1) Do you recommend ALWAYS turning this option ON - no matter what lens you have? I still have the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM2 and the Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 and the Sony 85mm f/1.8. I just want to make sure that there are no unsightly effects when you have distortion correction ON in the camera. I am not familiar with this technique. I don't know if it is good or bad. 2) If I have the lens distortion ON in the camera: Then do I even need to edit distortion in programs like Lightroom, Luminar Neo, etc.? 3) If I have the lens distortion turned ON in the camera: Does this function only work on JPEG or also on RAW photos? 4) Can the in-camera lens distortion then keep up with the lens distortion correction in programs like Lightroom, Luminar Neo etc.? Thanks in advance and best regards from Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
I generally keep distortion correction on. It only affects JPEGs and Video footage, so it is worth keeping on so that you can have good results right out of camera. For RAW images you will have to use correction profiles in software.
hi, I'm not a professional photographer just a normal streamer who loves to upgrade her cam that's why im having second thoughts on investing the sony 20mm G 1.8.....is the tamron 20mm 2.8 already good for a streaming camera?
Hi, I liked this lenses ! Thinking of using it in my new Z Cam EC2. Do you think it Will be a Good choice ? ISnt bad for low light situation ??? I Will use it for filming. Thanks a lot. another thing: you said it can have a Little distortion... but my camera is 2.3 times croped, so maybe it wont see the distortion because the camera is croped, right? thanks a lot.
I would have to lean towards the Samyang. The Tamron is sharper, but it's distortion is so high and the autofocus isn't as good. It's also unnecessarily large in comparison to the Samyang.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sorry for not being specific hahaha I'm going to use it mainly for landscape, I have no problems with manual focus, I even like it. I would also like to know which of the two is sharper in the whole image at apertures like f5-f11. I'm not convinced by the distortion of the tamron, and the size and weight of the Viltrox, but in everything else I love them both. Thank you.
I need a wide angle lens for full frame and I am between this one and Samyang 18 f2.8. Samyang is wider and has lower distortion, but Tamron has better image quality, better build quality and focuses closer. It is a hard decision.
With all due respect, the whole point of my new process is to provide two options - one very thorough, the other more of a quick/normal review. You can't judge the former based on the criteria of the latter. More people watch my long format reviews than watch my shorter ones.
@@DustinAbbottTWI You are right. You are right but; Compared to Sony 20mm 2.8 and canon 24mm / 2.8, it is bigger but the quality is the same, i.e. bigger than the same quality. I guess it's not very important anyway

Albert - let me quickly tell you how ridiculous your statement is. I made such a big deal out of the distortion that Tamron went aggressively after Adobe to release a profile to correct it (which they did). All of this within a week of my letting them know how objectionable I found the distortion. Quit making accusations that you have no evidence to support.

it's a 20mm WIDE ANGLE prime lens for full frame - of course it has distortion!
@@ruechel... a LOT of distortion!!! a LOT!
Nick Ruechel oh really?
Thats why most other wide angle lenses have a lot less distortion?
@Nick: that's true, though this is an unusually high amount, unfortunately.

My pleasure.
Distortion is indeed horrible, but Lr has already updated in order to correct that, so, I'm keeping it :)
Yes, myself and a few Tamron employees helped make that happen.

You're welcome.
Thank you for the amazing video, considering IQ and versatility for stills would you go with this or the samyang 18mm f2.8?
Best case scenario is the Sony 20mm F1.8 G (by far the best of the bunch), but the Samyang would be my second choice.
Thank you Mr Abbott

It's not as good. Autofocus isn't as good, and it has a lot of distortion.
Samyang 18mm 2.8 & Tamron 20mm 2.8
Which one i choose for wedding ?
I would probably go for the Samyang. The Tamron's distortion is a liability

Hi Lori - I don't know about your camera system so I can't really give you an informed opinion.
Hey Dustin
In 2022 would you recommend the Samyang 18mm or the Tamron 20mm?
Thanks.
I would have to lean towards the Samyang. The Tamron is sharper, but it's distortion is so high and the autofocus isn't as good. It's also unnecessarily large in comparison to the Samyang.
Hello Dustin, i love your reviews, can you tell me what are better between Viltrox 20mm and Tamron 20mm 2.8? Thanks
Better for what, exactly? Manual focus and autofocus lenses have different strengths.
