  • In this video, we're going to compare and contrast USB-C vs. 3.5mm headphones. We'll look at the advantages and disadvantages of each connection type, and decide which is the best option for High Res Performance.
    There are two types of USB-C adapters out there: passive (just wires to pins, like an extension for a 3.5mm jack) and internal DAC units. I'll discuss them and share my thoughts!

    USB-C to 3.5mm DAC adapter will drain your device's battery faster.. your device will attempt to charge the plugged USB.. you'll notice it'll get warm while using it..

      With USB C and power charging, there won't be an issue with a competent DAC (Like our Rhodium). Resistances on the CC1/CC2 lines are used to indicate any ability to charge from the attached device; Rhodium's resistances present tell any host that we do NOT charge. So we just pull some current from the phone for operation. If your phone is getting warm while using Rhodium, I'd check to make sure you're using native hardware decoding of high res (which Rhodium supports), not software emulation.

    So what is the best DAC to buy now? There are no more new LGs left. That's all I ever owned, and I bought them for the hi-fi audio. I hate that so many phones have no jack.

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio  Před 2 lety +1

      Well, absent the LG units, we do make a Rhodium DAC. It's very highly rated, measures great, is super small, plenty of power, high res (384 kHz/32 bit) and USB C plug and play...
      But we're down to New Old Stock phones and external DACs. It is a sad time!

    hello, Is there a way to find out whether the handphone i used are supports type C earphones or not?

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio  Před 4 měsíci

      Yep! Very few headphones/IEMs are USB C natively; if they are, they have a USB C plug on the end.
      Most headphones have a 3.5mm TRS (or TRRS) plug on the end, and would need an adapter like our Rhodium DAC - something that adapts USB C digital audio and creates analog for your headphones to use.

    what do you think about nowadays? theres alot of usb c IEMs just direct usb c no dongle which im about to buy, im curious on what you think whether its superior or inferior to 3.5 mm jacks?

      Same question ! I am confused between 7hz Zero 3.5 vs type c . Which one to buy and is there any difference in sound quality ?

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio  Před 5 měsíci

      Well, I'm still a fan of a separate DAC. IF you like the IEMs that have the USB C, go for it! However, DACs tend to be MUCH more subtle in sound quality differences than IEMs, so personally I would want to keep the DAC and IEMs/headphones separate. That way I can choose the IEM that I prefer the sound of. I can also use multiple headphones for different places. Like I might want over-ears at a desk/office, but IEMs when traveling. Same DAC does both, but different headphones.
      In the end, IMHO it's about a slight amount of convenience (built-in DAC - take one of our IEMs and heatshrink it to a Rhodium and you have the same thing) versus a pretty big gain in flexibility and application with multiple headphones/IEMs.

    • @periodicaudio
      @periodicaudio  Před 5 měsíci

      @@ETXD-fb5rn Answer below! Would you only ever want to use just one amp/DAC with a specific set of IEMs? No? Then get separates - DAC and IEM/headphone separate.
