Always fun to think that each console version of Minecraft is someone's first experience of the game.
The ps4 edition was my first, not a bad one to play. Honestly prefer it do bedrock (mostly nostalgia)

Honestly I really like the 3DS edition. It’s not perfect but it has a lot of charm and it was the first Minecraft that I was able to play at more than 7 fps lol

@burnt-potatoes Before 2018 it actually used to be console edition but with better together update Switch and Xbox switched from console edition to Bedrock edition
I think the main problem was that the 3DS was outdated by 2017. After all, that’s the year the switch came out, and Minecraft has a pretty successful Nintendo switch version going. The 3DS was on its way out by the time Minecraft got a 3DS release. Not only that, but it’s not even playable on all versions, it’s only playable on specific revisions.

The 3DS edition is actually based on Minecraft Pocket Edition! You can even use very basic shader bin mods on it, as well as custom texture packs. Its a super interesting outlier among the many many versions of the game.

And there is also very linear mods like sheeptastic, better creepers, giant baby zombies, and other stuff! There are also downloadable worlds people have made, and custom skins and so much more! I just wish there was more mods, maybe some day... I also wish there was online multiplayer, but that's just a dream for now.

I remember trying to port a texture pack and accidentally slightly messing up the atlas enough to jumble all the textures.

In the 8 year life of the 3ds, it was only on the eshop at all for up to a year depending on where you were. It was probably selling alright, maybe a few hundred thousand total, but if it was discontinued that quickly then there is no way it was selling well.

@@JmKrokY probably just a marketing thing Nintendo agreed on with mojang, and if it isn’t there’s another reasonable explanation. The 3ds was essentially dead by then, selling barely 5 million copies when 3ds Minecraft was out, meaning it could have sold a hundred thousand copies and still be the top deer by far.

I loved it when minecraft had limited worlds. It was a fun challenge being forced to survive and build in a small area. If it was still an option I would always make my worlds like that
You can still create limited worlds in a way by manipulating the world border, but that requires the use of commands and can only go so far.
But I can definetly see what you are after. Imposing a limit on your world size forces you to rethink how you play and focus more on renewable resources. It has a special appeal that I too enjoy.

I actually found a custom map pack someone made that replicates limited world sizes in both Java and Bedrock, I use it in a special modpack I have for my Steam Deck that replicates Console Edition as close as possible in Java and it feels super accurate

Not only that but I also connected a ps4 controller to play the full experience.

@@zorromagico4534the n64 is more powerful than the ps1, also the new 3ds is able to emulate ps1, which means the 3ds is at the very least 5x more powerful than the ps1. I'd say its a hybrid between the gamecube and the n64.

This looks so weird before the update. I bought Minecraft on 4 different platforms and this was my second purchase, I never regretted it. My biggest gripe with the game is that there is no snow. You can spawn it with cheats but can't find it anywhere In the world. I wanted to make snow golem guardians for my clifside home and couldn't make any without invalidating archivements.

There was always naturally generating snow in every version of every edition except Java.
I had tons of worlds that spawned with snow and even snow villages with spruce doors and the large houses having chest with crops in them

I have been playing it recently, and i love it. Its a good way to change up the formula. It is just so charmingly pathetic, i love it! Also, there is a north american physical copy, so all you need to do is jailbreak your 3ds or get a north american version in order to play it

I recently picked up a new 3ds with this version and have put a surprising amount of time into it. I remember wanting a 3ds version of minecraft for on the go play for so long, but by the time it came out the switch edition had been out for a year. It's so refreshing to play old versions with interesting gimics and limitations
You can actually install shaders on the 3DS version and it doesn't hurt performance at all.
I'd also like to clarify some things.
Multiplayer actually still works because it's local and not online. The game isn't perfect but I think the fact that it CAN run minecraft is pretty incredible, you can barely run PS1 games on it at 25 FPS if you mod it. Updates are supposed to show up when you launch the game so I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. I'm actually quite happy I bought the game when I did and I'm not disappointed at all, I enjoy being able to build no matter where I am. I like to think I own the last copy of the game because I bought it 11 minutes before the eShop closed.
PS1 games run bad like that because you aren't using a good emulator it's not the 3DS's fault
@@josheeb It depends on the game. I was using retroarch running Sheep Raider. It runs fine on some levels but on others it drops so low the run button doesn't even work.
i mod it and got the game, i put the shader, i was wanting to remove, but there is no mod to remove it and im awful at removing files without hurting the entire game and making it unplayable

My switch loads similarly to this. Its a huge downfall as it makes the elytra basically useless. You end up outflying the screen and crashing.
I think I once tested and 3DS version actually loads the world from the menu faster than the Switch version 💀
shame that the Switch version is so bad now. I don't think it was always like this though, as I remember it running perfectly within the early years of owning ther Switch
@ask343 The previous version (legacy console edition) had better performance than the current Bedrock version and even the first version of Bedrock that my Switch cartridge shipped with ran WAY smoother than the current update but that's to be expected because Minecraft has made some pretty big updates since then
@@JmKrokYIt's not even just Switch. I swear whatever they did to bedrock completely fucked it for all platforms. You just feel it on switch and mobile the worst.
@fourscarlet7581 They expanded worlds by A LOT in the caves and cliffs update which resulted in worse performance on old devices such as Nintendo Switch and less powerful smartphones. On top of all that they don't try to improve the performance as much as they should on any platform, not even the more powerful console versions. Honestly I always found Java Edition to run better on PC than Bedrock like it doesn't have good performance like the others say at all.
They should have called “Minecraft Mini” or something similar and leaned into the failures as features. I can imagine a market for this if it had been marketed perhaps differently. Because I don’t own a 3ds, but I’d have bought one to play Minecraft mini on the go.
thats basically what pocket edition already was during that period so ehhh. In general minecraft was just super unbalanced during that time and it rlly didnt have much hope imo
Fun Fact: You can actually play the Mario Mash-Up pack on Bedrock Edition, but it's only available on Switch (they also put it on the Switch's Legacy Edition)
Sadly it's pretty butchered in Bedrock. Many things don't work right.

The fact that theres a modding community for this is just... im honestly not sure what it is, but its definitely a thing.
I remember this being the only version of Minecraft I could play for a while, I used to transform those old massive village seeds into big citites since Tango Tek was making his Villager mod at the time. Lots of great memories
I have the fondest memories playing 3Ds minecraft with my little brother. He didn't have any other console, so that's what we were stuck with. I love it for that reason
I always find the stuff that gets created under performance constraints fascinating. It reminds me of the Tiger Handheld ports of iconic games like Sonic 3, Street Fighter 2, and even an impressive but cancelled version of Castlevania SotN on PS1; which actually ended up online for us to be amazed they even attempted it back then!

This was my first version of Minecraft other than an Xbox 360 that hasn't been able to be updated since 2013. I got a physical copy of the game just in time too. I found the game in a Walmart after my birthday in September, and got it for Christmas that year. I almost never put that game away once I got it. I had every single world slot filled with fully fleshed out worlds before some of the inputs on my DS finally gave out. I haven't played it in a very long time now, but this video has made me want to get the replacement parts and fix it up.

My kids actually play this on their 3DS's still. The only other version they play regularly is maybe on an old Amazon fire 7 tablet. So the experience is kinda similar lol!
I still have an old Kindle Fire that we had when I was in 5th grade that technically was supposed to be my grandma's (but she never used it). At the time we eventually got Minecraft Pocket Edition on it, back when it was still in Alpha. That install of PE was never updated, which means to this day I still have a working fully-intact copy of an Alpha version of Pocket Edition with all my old worlds I made when I was like 10 that was never updated, since the Kindle thankfully still works as long as it's plugged into a charger.

Tbh, I’m not surprised there aren’t that many sold. In my experience a DS/DS lite/DSi/3DS/2DS has always been a secondary console, meaning most people have a 3DS or other hand held in addition to their main console.

I remember being at a daycare and seeing a kid playing minecraft on the 3ds, and he needed my help to figure out hot to turn in the game
My favorite way to play this game is on the steam deck. You get the full fat java edition and are always up to date with the latest version. It runs great, being able to crank up settings to pretty high while still retaining good fps (though i keep a render distance of 16 for the sake of battery life, but if you're not worried about that you can do more). Plus you're able to use mobs, from stuff as simple of quality of life mods like a mini map to adding big stuff like new mobs and blocks.
This used to be my jam. When I was broke and moving around a lot, I didn't have time to buy a console or play one, no point in getting a PC either, so I just had a 3DS. I spent a LOT of time on 3DS Minecraft and Binding of Isaac, really solid ports for what they were able to do with the hardware.

That's like having Minecraft VR for Labo but instead of virtually being in the Minecraft world, you're virtually in a room with a screen that plays Minecraft.
It’s crazy that this version actually launched months AFTER the Switch Version… I guess they figured the massive 3DS install base would work in their favor. But it didn’t because every kid with a 3DS was probably waiting on a Switch for Christmas…
The main issue I think is that this is a post-Switch 3DS game, which usually never did well
also did you know that this is the only version of Minecraft where you can craft a melon block into 9 slices? You can do the reverse on every version but this is the only one where you can get max melon efficiency with Silk Touch
It really isn't a bad game at all, you just have to get used to the controls. I almost love the game, really, and I love the portability aspect, and the community.

I personally REALLY love this version, as someone who currently owns 5 versions of the game haha. To me, it's the simplicity that reaches me. It brings me back to when I was around 6 years old and played the game, mostly messing around in creative or being scared in survival. While ofc, I could simply use an older version via java edition of minecraft, I really like having a more recent and fully updated version of the game that STILL holds an older time of it's life.

a small detail i noticed is at the start screen the top screen's background is the overworld and the bottom screen has the nether. nice small touch i think.
I had this as my only way of playing Minecraft for years and to this day I still use as close to 3DS controls as I can when I play Minecraft.
The little nub stick for shifting your view totally ruins it imo, starts hurting your hand almost straight away. Thats nintendos fault. Wish theyd have given us two circle pads, especially on the new 2ds xl. Woulda been a really good reason tp buy one as the 3ds was on its way out. The citcle pad IMO for a clamshell handheld is basically perfect. I cant imagine a better design without a cutout on the top half for the sticks to sit in. It was the PSPs control stick done right.
Also the biggest crime of this port is the lack of 3d. Especially as its new 3ds only. They deffo could have done it, and IMO should have done it, even if it didnt sell as well as they hoped. Not only did they promise it, its the 3ds. Its expected. Its literally the only reason ypud play this vs other versions unless its all you have
The Vita port is the worst one IMO tho which is a shame cos i love the vita so much.
Oh.... you played the vita version. The controls are better for sure but the performance is absolutley awful. I couldnt even get 30fps on a skyblock map with the later updates.

I recently modded my 3DS just to play this version and while yes, this is probably the worst version of the game, there is a lot of charm to this version. just the fact that the 3DS can run it is wild.

It's interesting seeing that in the UK it was download only, because in America cartridges actually *did* get released, and I was able to snag myself a second hand cartridge to play Minecraft N3DS Edition (as well as one for Terraria 3DS because I love my weird console ports of games)
I don't hold much opinion for Bedrock, but old Pocket Edition warms my soul enough to get a kick out of this 3DS version on a sheer "how the heck" level.
I love 3DS Minecraft, more than anything for the controls. I don't know why but I love controlling the camera with the little nub it just feels so much more responsive than an analog stick. One of my favorite ways to play Minecraft. The Retroid Pocket Flip is a close second because of the hall-effect 3DS sliders. Great for playing some modern bedrock

I had no idea Minecraft had a 3DS version.
The map on the bottom screen is pretty cool, always nice to know where you are without having to carry around like a dozen maps or something that you have to shuffle through to know where in your world you are, it's just not convenient in the main versions.
But the lag... omg. That is a big oof. XD
the controls would be so much better if you could move the camera with the touch screen. like that would make so much sense with the layout it has

I was watching some instructional videos at 2x speed before starting this video and the setting carried over. Wow what an experience!
i have so many memories of this game, and i love it. I own a physical cart of the game and want to play more of it, but my new 2ds xl has a broken charge port. I'm going to repair it soon, as well as replace the c-stick with a new one, or a different one entirely. but i still have my old cart and old console, waiting to be played.
I would most definitely say that this version for the New Nin3ds is the most innovative using 2 screens since no other console, by any means to this day, has done that.
If anything it feels like the perfect and most legitimate way to play it on the go, locally or just by one's self.

Oh yeah, and they replaced the music discs with enchanted iron tools. Me and my brothers would have so much fun with them!

This version of minecraft would've been my favorite despite its issues if it wasn't for my 500+hour kingdom and underground city didn't get yeeted by a hard corruption.

i can say, i play this version of the game the most since i got it.
It's a shame that this version didn't get a performance update with the ability to have fast graphics, lower the draw distance even further than it is, turn off smooth lighting and anything else to get this version to run at a more favorable level.
the absence of 3D feature is understandable given the low power of the system, but there were a few ways it could have been achieved.
i would have given this version that last update with very specific options for performance, but there's not much we can do about that now.
Follow up video: IBXToycat plays the Raspberry Pi version of MC. Most of the video is you trying to set up a respberry pi, and yelling "what does sudo mean?!!" to Harrison.
I never got to experience this version because I grew up with the original 3ds XL, so ps3 and Java edition were my childhood

With a nodded 3ds you can modify the controls and even bind buttons to the touch screen, its super cool :)
Since it was only available on New Nintendo 3DS/2DS it had limited reach with match smaller possible install base compared to games that work on standard Nintendo 3DS.
When I was younger when it came out, we bought it, without realizing the "New" meant it required the new 3ds. So we returned it, after it didn't work in my 3ds XL, when the game came out. I do have the Wii U version still!
People with old 3DS systems (including me) had some options for an alternative, like Cube Creator 3D, DScraft and Craftus. I've played a minecraft port for the old 3ds and realized it's actually just Cube Creator 3D with minecraft textures

I own a physical copy of this, I remember playing it and the crashes were insane like the system couldn’t handle it.
This made me go back to playing minecraft on my 3ds again however I stopped playing because I remembered it was on 3ds
I still have this version of minecraft. I got it along with a new nin 3ds in 2017 when i believe both things first released, it was really fun but I had a ps4 so I eventually stopped
Me and one of my brothers beat the game using a dupe glitch where one person joining the game would go into their inventory, the host would, while the joiner was still in their inventory, save the game. The joiner would then throw any items they wanted duped. It was fun, it also broke the game lol.
