  • A critical analysis of Mark Jefferson in Life is Strange. In this video I look at Mark Jefferson’s photography, attire, characteristics and mannerisms. There are layers of symbolism attributable to these facets of his character along with underlying psychological reasons for his pursuits in the medium of photography which I look to explore in detail.

I joked about him being the bad guy when making the decision at the end of episode 2. But as soon as he announced victoria as the winner of the contest, It hit me that it's him. The empty binder with her name in the dark room was the dead give away. Also I thought Samuel had some connection to your time travel powers. He talks to you it like he knows you have powers when you speak to him in episode 4. To bad none of that really got explained. I was also disappointed that Jefferson was no where to be found in before the storm...

The character that really first captured my interest was Jefferson and when his true nature was revealed, I felt so betrayed. He's still my favorite character out of the franchise though.

Yeah I also felt profoundly betrayed. I really liked him!

I had a small feeling he knew something but I hadn't the slightest idea he was the bad guy. Funny though, I blamed him for Kate's situation in the principle's office not wanting to be a snitch on Nathan prior to knowing he was the guy who drugs her.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  Před 6 lety +4

That's interesting. After I found out the truth I did wonder what happens if you blame him during that bit.

I had a feeling something was wrong, but it was a "he knows more than he's letting on" thing, not a "he's a serial killer and behind everything".

When I started playing the game the first time I had a strong feeling that the bad guy would be one of the teachers/adults so I thought Nathan and the Principal were hiding something Nathan's family was doing however the scene where Jefferson shames Kate right before she tries to kill herself threw up a ton of red flags in my head but I immediately forgot about that scene because the next scene is Kate commiting suicide and is such an impactful scene that I forgot what Jefferson did so I was also shocked at the reveal. I think women are more "trained" to catch these red flags because of the dangerous nature of men in the real world so a lot of women can just take a few looks at Jefferson and conclude the guy is guilty af.
As for his art, I never really noticed his art until further playthroughs but most of his art features young women dressed in little clothing and looking vulnerable in black and white. I've seen some female lets players actually look at Jefferson's work and conclude that the guy is a secret pervert.

I'm VERY late to the party here but I replayed this game last week and so, that's what's on my mind. My heart leapt when you started talking about Sontag - mainly, because I've been drawing the same comparisons myself over the last few days. And I've never heard anyone else talk about it. I took photography at degree level and, as a result, Sontag's On Photography brings so much to me. She talks more or less all the way through about owing these photographs - whether keeping as memories or, I suppose, using the camera as a weapon. And then Araki, of course! He's another person I've thought about - Tokyo Lucky Hole especially made me think of Jefferson's work. I'd never before thought about comparisons between films, for example Carrie, and the whole Vortex Club before a murder situation. I never suspected Jefferson; I was just convinced all the way through that Rachel was dead or, specifically, murdered. But not by Nathan. I was clear on that much. I suspected Samuel for a moment, when I saw the photos he had of Rachel, but then decided that might be too obvious. Then, when I discovered it actually WAS Jefferson, I felt so dumb because the game gives us SO much all the way through. His lectures about capturing people in dark rooms speak a lot more loudly when you know he's actually behind it.
Enjoyed this little series, thank you!

He was the person I suspected the least because he was more like a cosmetic character with relatively not much screen time. Only one thing made me a bit suspicious.
His profile picture was right to next to Max in the inventory screen and I couldn't really explain it considering the little time he appeared in game. So I thought that maybe he could play a bigger role. The night outside school where Victoria was trying to use him but he didn't play her game I was almost 100% sure that he is a good guy.
The end of chapter 4 was therefore a huge shock and surprise for me!

Could it be possible for Jefferson to be a "stand-in" for human-traffickers? He abducts his victims, holds them hostage in the Dark Room, abuses his victims by drugging them, and "photographing their innocence" and getting away with his deeds up until Friday, October 11th, 2013.

it isn't really a build up if you listen carefully...Jefferson revealed he was going to betray you first day in class...he said "seriously though, i could frame anyone of you in a dark corner and anyone of you could do that to me...but isn't that too easy...too obvious?"
also it isn't really a BETRAYAL as such because a betrayal is when someone is loyal to you then turns their back on you...Mark never was loyal to Max. He ad kidnapped and killed LOADS of girls for the sake of his twisted photographic art. i remember someone once thought he was a simple pervert and rapist because he only kidnapped girls and i was laughing at how stupid that gamer was...Mark Jefferson is not a pervert...he doesn't care about girls sexually...he cares about them artistically and wants to capture them...while it is disturbing i can understand it. To him people like Rachel, Kate and Max were amazing because they glowed...killing them was simply necessary to avoid being caught.

I didn't pick up on it because I played this game when I was 14/15 years old with severe daddy issues so I immediately latched onto him as the seemingly nice older mentor figure who I could have a crush on.
That was probably the saddest realization I've got from this game now looking back as a grown woman, the moment I realized I definitely would've become one of his victims and just another name on his collection of red binders.

IMO story wise and character wise this is how i rate the LIS Seasons (bear in mind i say SEASONS not games...so i am putting Before the storm as part of Season 1 because well...it is story wise...this is the same for Captain Spirit and Season 2):
    1. Season 3/ True Colors
    2. Season 1
    3. Season 2
