My first exposure to these was in 1967 (I just turned 70, BTW!) when our family took a trip to California. My dad hired a personal tour guide to drive our car and who knew L.A. like the back of her hand. I was curious about the towering palms and asked her about them. I must not have been direct enough in my questioning and she thought I was talking about the eucalyptus trees! She told me they had been brought in from Australia many years before and planted in honor of something (world's fair or exhibition), as I remember. Much later, with the advent of the Internet, I found out about them. The cool thing about them is that in CA, they can reach their full height of around 100', because it doesn't get cold enough to take them out. I guess I'm not the only fan! 🌴
