40 Winks was developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software and released on the PlayStation in November 1999 for both the US and Europe. A Nintendo 64 version was planned, advertised, & shown off. However, the publisher pulled the plug on the N64 after the PS1 release. Occasionally, dumped builds would leak online, but no official version saw the light of day until Piko Interactive purchased the rights and released the game in 2019. In 2021 a lost Game Boy Color version appeared on eBay.

John's ghost is so funny. "Yeah I knew that, it's on my gameboy." haha. "unseen 64, nothing, this game is a GHOST" haha ok John.
Can you get TJ on the show?
@@RotatableHorse Next time he's in-state, I'll ask!
Seems to be a fun game, like, level design seems interesting enough. And it does translate the cozy feel of the n64 version well.
This makes me so curious about what other portable console “demakes” we might be missing out on.
Probably quite a few
@@hard4games how cool would a GBC version of Dinosaur Planet be?
@@Megsducks that would be sick. 😀
Re-Volt was supposed to have a GBC game but it never saw the light of day
These development reviews are so important! Thanks for all the hard work H4G!!
Meeeeh
move over mario
Omg… 40 Winks movie coming soon? 😂
step aside, crash

Bubsy has a new challenger it seems.
Who's mario
The 40 Winks ROM was floating around the web long before old backdoor Piko did his physical release.
8:18 This sound you're referring to is called a Duty Cycle. A common effect/instrument on many 8-bit soundfonts and a personal favorite of mine
Oh man 40 Winks was the very FIRST game I ever played. I was 5, and my older cousin had gifted my family his old PS1 after he got a PS2.
He gave us 2 games with the PS1: Crash Bandicoot, and 40 Winks. We had no idea about games, and made the mistake of playing 40 Winks first.
6:45 Dithering still looks like checkerboard on a Game Boy Color screen.
I SAW THIS AND TRIED TO BUY IT BUT FAILED THE FIRST TIME.
I'M GLAD YOU GUYS GOT IT
don't get your hopes up, Piko Interactive is involved
Holy crap I wish someone could make a complete music rip. I love what little I heard here.
I also wish we could find out who worked on the music for the Game Boy Color version.
Never heard of the game, but it seems fun. Would love to play this found version, the finished game with bosses would be an extra. So hope this gets released as well
this looks impressively nice for a GBC game wow. sad to know that this never released
I'm psyched to learn about this. The PS1 is my favorite system, and several years back I became aware of 40 Winks. I eventually found a copy and played it through. It was charming and fun, and it holds a nice spot in my heart. So it was to my joy when the N64 version was announced. I backed it on Kickstarter, got my copy. I never figured I'd have the opportunity to have yet another version of this odd little title.
If Piko Interactive is going to put in bosses, they'd better A. Use whatever graphics are available in the GBC cart, or B. Get former Eurocom/(outsourced company) employees to handle it to at least match the art style and code and keep it consistent. The Eurocom guys may be out there somewhere. Otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten that port of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy.
Nah, the Sphinx port mostly happened cos the game's original dev tools still exist, they were even released for free on GOG
7:10 never did I expect that pink floyd esque sound on the gameboy
I had to look into that Keygen music, "Digital Insanity" goes so hard. Thank you.
digital insantiy? i thought it was called "unreal superhero 3"?
@@Chipmunkboy "Digital Insanity" is the name of the scene cracker group, composed of Kenet and Rez. The chiptune name is indeed called "Unreal Superhero 3"
I remember seeing this game in magazines back in the day. Never got around to playing it sadly. Very cool music in the game boy color version!
Is there a credits anywhere in this build? I would love to know who composed the music in this GBC port!
Wow, such a discovery! 40 Winks needs a comeback... so underrated!!
Great video. I'm happy you two guys are still putting out videos together
there's a Jet Force Gemini GBC build out there somewhere too, I want them to release that!
That would be Microsoft's business. It's a Rare IP.
@@MathewHaswellnow it is but back then that would of been Nintendo
@@MathewHaswellI wouldn't rule it out. Microsoft and Nintendo have been playing nice for awhile now.
would be really cool to see the whole crew back in a video, again, thanks for continuing to make videos guys :)
Great video. Oh and, yeah the KeyGen music was awesome lol
"You might be seeing squares" This is true. If you put this video at 144p (the resolution of the Gameboy Color) all the images and sprites in this look way better.
It's almost like CRT filter at that resolution. But in real life, the image was just small, and everything kinda blends in your own vision. lol
You always get the best exclusives on this stuff! Congrats again on this great scoop.
This title has _always_ fascinated me, and it's sudden...I guess you could call it "resurgence" after all these years has been incredible to watch. I never even knew that a GBC port was even planned. It looks incredible, I hope someone allows for an actual cartridge to be released like the N64 title was.
It's likely we will get the GBC version as a completed game at some point with Cartridge on tow, in the video it was pointed out Piko who owns 40 Winks did take some interest in this lost version and there's possibly plans to actually finish the job and release another previously unreleased version of 40 Winks, now if we can get the same thing for Glover 2.
@@bobafett4265Not so true, since they're a publisher company not a developer company. Also Piko Interactive channel is renamed to Bleem.
However if Limited Run Games helps them it's possible since the Carbon Engine can work with the old retros mostly heard for PS1/PSX, SNES, and GBA for now. Hope it does fix something that was broken like 40 Winks and Glover on Steam which are not 100% like the originals at all.
Wow they really went the extra mile creating and animating 3d models of these characters! Or at least simulate some look of 3d reminiscent of the main console game, rather than just cheap sprites.
They had them already created and animated for the N64 game.
@@TheRealPatete yeah but it’s still effort to convert them to lower spec hardware
@@KetwunsGamingPad yeah just like Donkey Kong Country.
The beta build idea included with the full game would be a good idea. It would be interesting if someone found the original developers who worked on the game. That way we can get a understanding of what transpired at the studio as they worked on the game.
I was the only person who played this game in the ps1 as a kid
Any chance to get to hear the soundtrack anywhere? Was hoping you'd preview part of the haunted house level's music but there's barely a second of it in the video. Shame, that's one of my most favorite tracks from the PS1/N64 version.
Unfortunately not at the moment. Gonna have to wait for the official release.
This show is like the "we have that rare phantom game console show" and you don't ask how they got it.
Great video as always hope you two have a great weekend keep up the good work.
Also regarding the music, it definitely sounds like it was made by either Allister Brimble or Will Davis, or even both of them
It was both of them (Source: Allister himself)
deep rock galatic has a legacy mode where you can play the game as it was when it first launched, so It's similar to what you're suggesting.
Good work!
George Castanza talking about videogames. I knew he liked Frogger but never knew it went further then that. 😂
Nice a new video about Gameboy game just in time for weekend
makes me think of the avenging spirit re-release for the gameboy last year
What the name of the developers that worked for the gbc version of the games?
I was part of the kick-starter for the N64 game. I spent a ton of money backing that, and got screwed over hard. They sent me a regular edition instead of a collectors edition, the special controller I received was broken, and never got the plush. Never got any response to my messages to piko either. What a pile of garbage that entire campaign was. Haven't backed anything since then.
1:17 "Rambunctious"
Any idea on who originally developed the Gameboy Color version? Was it Eurocom themselves, or it was someone else?
soooooo sick THANK YOU
can't get enough retro game leaks!!
Tangentially related: The old N64 prototype ROM that has been on the internet for years and years turns out to be a PAL version running at 50Hz, and, to top it, it's among the only 4 games on the whole catalogue that have PAL versions with true 288p PAL unscaled resolution, outside of which, every PAL N64 game either adds black bards on top and bottom to compensate, or stretches the 240p framebuffer resolution up to 288p instead(5 to 6 scaling), adding blurryness.
Any idea what the Piko release does? is it NTSC 60Hz instead?
The other PAL 1:1 games are Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye, and Perfect Dark, all from RAREWARE, a British dev, just like 40 Wink's EUROCOM.
Yes, EXTRA resolution on the N64. Full 288 lines instead of those meager 240...
Finally I alway saw the commercial and at the end it mentioned the game boy but nothing about it I could find
an official release of this game would be nice, maybe as a bonus feature in an update to the Steam version
Just curious, but is there any info on who was involved in the music? It kinda sounds like Manfred Linzner's GHX driver but also a bit like Allister Brimble's Quickthunder driver, would be neat to know who's behind those tunes.
The music was mostly done by Allister Brimble with some tunes done by Will Davis using Brimble's GBC Driver.
@@T3KNUG3T5 interesting! Wish I knew this back when I interviewed Brimble, thanks for letting me know
@@valencoffeebat No problem!
Some of the music just sounds glitched to me.
Are there plans to dump the game on the web ?
Sadly Piko is extremely anti-preservation…
They won't release.
@@labenvenci1584 that sucks
Why are they so lame?
@@BigMacOrange there not at least there gonna try to finish the game and maybe people will dump it ?
Hey H4G, I'm doing a video essay on the original PS1 game and I certainly want to mention this (as well as the N64 proto). Do you mind if I use some of your footage and credit you?
Sure! Feel free and thanks for asking. 😄
@@hard4games Thank you!
Real chiptune feel sometimes but also art music.
wait so is there a dumped rom copy of this
i actually really like the music
I used to play this game as a kid, but it was on a DEMO DISC, but i still played it as if it was a full game lol, now my niece who is 4-5 years old plays it alot on my Playstation Classic that i "hacked"
How did you get it and where would you have played a game that was never announced when you were a kid?
@@stephenfiler3204 the Playstation version! ;)
thanks, lad.
You guys have had a slow climb up but you're tasting 100k. Hopefully, just days away...well we can pray. And till then i will stay. I think i first subbed along time ago, but my memory is crap because my rom strickers peeled back.
Didn't they find the talky alarm clock's model in "Sonic' Schoolhouse"?
Thanks for covering these discovered games. Pour one out for forest of illusion :(
What happened to forest of illusion?
Ceasing operations is the best way to put it
@@sppspharmdude crap, that's awful.
@@sppspharmdude what happened???
Wait what?!
Piko Interactive's Mouth be watering over this news.
They have the game in-house now. Actually a more complete version than we are showing off here.
I like the character designs in this game, very Aardman-like!
Neat!
Surprised that the board had to collect data that would of been collected by the Australian Bureau of statistics. All without computers.
It's using the very same Croc 3d engine.
Watch Out Mario!
Ok this is cool
Is there a way to download the rom?
N64 Prototype exist online, aftermarket N64 and unreleased gameboy version won’t be dumped and released to public due to being active IP by Piko. Don’t expect to see it online ever
@@renzom5795Piko's N64 ROM is easily available online, so the GBC ROM is missing now.
What's a "Sony Vegas Key Gem"? English please! 😆
But seriously, how have I never heard of or seen this N64 game before??? It looks SO well made! What else have I not discovered yet from that era?
Well i just realized this is Hard4games.
kinda reminds me of george costanza abit
watch out out for the DMCA from Piko!
I've only played this on Playstation. The N64 port looks pretty decent and the Gameboy Colour looks alright but sounds weird.
the missing information here, ruff n tumble was the first game made for Amiga computers
Completely different game/developer
So has this been dumped anywhere? Hidden Palace?
No, it's gonna be Piko Interactive but they haven't even fix anything to the matter at all. I don't think they are going to fix it since they never released fix Glover 2 nor the other N64 game that wasn't released.
Gonna say less of this and hope a better unreleased prototype game shows up because it isn't great news at all.
Also PC games of theirs is garbage and totally all of them need modding patches for better experiences.
@@dragtogo2735Sounds like s bunch of incompetents hoping to find someone abusing copyright.
why do the most interesting games end up being cancelled?
Idk. I also can't see why finished games got canceled.. the south park game is one that comes to mind. Like that would just be such a cool game to own CIB or even just the cart. I know you can get physical carts but it's not the same as official/authentic...
I can only think of two reasons why both versions were never released,1,the N64 wasn’t so successful as hoped and being close to end and,2 the N64 version was much more expensive to produce then the ps1 version,
Now while the gameboycolor was a huge success but it was close to an end as well, but what they could,ve done was stuff in a GBC emulator and released it as a GBA,but sadly they didn’t do that either.
*ring ring* " What?? Cartridges??? I thought all the consoles used CDs!"
The artwork in the magazine advertising scared me as an 6 year old so I never bought the game.
neat
will the rom be released!
no it won't because piko interactive is involved
@@DevEd_ i have the n64 40 Winks but can't dump the rom.
Hi! Since this is an active/in-development IP the cart owner will not be releasing the ROM.
@@hard4games sorry, i got excited, what i meant to say, was will we ever get to play the game?
So Ku!
If you watch in 144 you can get an idea of the original graphics
