Event Matches (1/2) - History Behind Super Smash Bros. Melee

- Shows where I believe some of the event matches in Super Smash Bros. Melee are derived from. (I recommend watching the video in higher quality using the old CZcams player if you can.)
- Zábava
"Protect Princess Peach from Bowser for one minute."
That sounds like quite the challenge.
Super Mario 128 was named because the original tech demo of the GameCube was called "Super Mario 128", and featured 128 tiny Mario's building by moving various blocks from course to course, to showcase the Gamecubes ability to have 128 figures independently move (this later became the technology used in Pikmin).
which also explains the 128 tiny marios you have to KO
Woah, I knew Falco must have said his Brawl Final Smash quote somewhere in one of the Starfox games!
"I'll take the sky anyday".
Thanks a lot for making this, it taught me a lot.
5 stars :D
You didn't mention how the Bomb Fest event had Link in his red alternate costume (Most likely a reference to the Red Ring in Zelda 1, Shield Spell in Zelda 2, or the Goron Tunic in Ocarina of Time) and Samus had her pink alternate costume (A reference to her appearance in the original Metroid when she has the Varia Suit).
Nice as always CCD! Though about Slippy inventing the cloaking device, it's possible he may have modified the Perfect Dark version (and it makes sense too), since the cloaking effect is infinite. The tradeoff however seems to be the fact that one's percentage still rises when being used.
Super mario 128 was also named because 64 x 2 = 128
Correction: Super Mario 128 was a tech-demo for Gamecube, which had 128 marios walking around a circular board. It was to show gamecube's ability to render so many cpu's at the same time, which lead to the development of Pikmin. Just saying.
Mostly true but some assets where included in sunshine and galaxy games i think some other games as well but i don't remember the names:)
Damn, that's right.
11:02 The event that has a bunch of 'woahs' and 'oophs' and 'dohs.'
When I was little, I thought the Samus was a boy so during the "Girl Power" event, I thought she(he) was their bodyguard or something...
0:55 I never knew Michael Bay did video games too!
"Super Mario 128" could also be a reference to an animation that Shigeru Miyamoto showed at a game expo (Might've been E3) that showed a Super Mario Bros. 8-bit Mario made of blocks, then one mario popped up from under each blokc until 128 were left. It was used to display the Gamecube's graphics I think.
wow, i waited for this for so long, i mean, some events are easily identifiable, but others not so much, and i wanted to know...
Its engine was to be reused for the cancelled Kirby Tilt'n Tumble 2 (whose remants can be seen in a certain minigame in Zelda TP, minus the multiple kirby part). But Miyamoto said they eventually used it for Pikmin.
So we at least got to play it somewhat, which is good considering all those tech demos that never materialized (Peach Castle, Zelda II Snes/2001 Demo..) We only got that Yoshi DS game and NSMB WiiU out of all the tech demos
That thing about Dark Link is awesome!
the lava's temperature...IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND! sorry, i just had to do it. =D
Thanks for making these SSBM History vids!
I'd like to see more actual cameo appearances by Nintendo characters in their actual games though, like throwing hints that Capt. Falcon and Samus may live in the same universe by having Samus' gunship appear in the sky in some F-Zero stages.
In Super Mario RPG, Link appears in a hotel sleeping in a bed. In LoZ: Ocarina of Time, you can see Mushroom Kingom characters on stained glass windows in Hyrule Castle and in LoZ: Link's Awakening, you can get a Yoshi Doll from a minigame.
Actually, 128 was a demo for the Gamecube during a gameshow, in which 128 Mario clones were running around a circle, to show the capabilities ofthe Gamecube.
The video of that demo can be seen in CZcams, just found it, as well as the Club Nintendo number were they spoke about "Super Mario 128"
acctually, the game entitled "super mario 128" was an rts for the gamecube where you control 128 marios. it eventually got turned into pikmin.
now i know why falco says "personally, i prefer the air" when he uses his final smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
I bop my head to and fro every time hear the first Legend of Zelda music! It's catchy!
The animation of dark Link falling through the water in OoT is the same way he 'falls' when defeated in Zelda 2 :P
Super Mario 128 was a project with new technology and ideas to incorporate into the game cube games (power of the GC).
You can see 128 tiny Marios in the demo, in Melee the fighter must defeat 128 tiny Marios.
@fireluigi12 Miyamoto himself made it clear that Super Mario Sunshine was a completely unrelated project to the actual Super Mario 128, and that parts of SM128 found their way into Pikmin, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and Twilight Princess.
I think the real question about the three "femme fatales" is... why is the character you fight them with tiny? *glances in the direction of the production team*
Great video, as always!
But i noticed something at 12:51:
It's over nine thousaaaaaaaaaaaand!
Link being in his red costume goes more towards the programmers used the green link as Dark Link but shaded him in completley.
@Mrunknown194 However, "Super Mario 128" was going to include gravity elements, thus making Galaxy the most obvious choice. Sunshine was probably just using the basic engine, not the full engine. And the whole Tech Demo thing was just something to show the Gamecube's graphical capacity. There was a game planned codenamed "Super Mario 128" which most probably became Pikmin on the Gamecube and Galaxy on the Wii.
I LOL'd at "Thank you, kind raccoon." Never saw that message before! :)
It happens if you finish the airship level, like shown. Other dialogue is also featured for the frog and hammer suits.
Everyone automatically assumes that Samus was a guy at first and everyone automatically assumed that SF64 Slippy is a girl by that voice, lol.
I love these "History behind..." videos, it's crazy how almost everything in the Smash Bros. series is a nod or an homage to Nintendo's humongous back catalog of games and history. No other company can do it quite like the Big N.
Super Mario Sunshine was an entirely different project. Shigeru Miyamato has stated that Super Mario Galaxy is, in fact, the final form of the Super Mario 128 project.
Bomb Fest should be renamed: "The Wrath of Michael Bay" because theres too many explosions
There were also a tech demo called super mario 128 with 128 tiny marios, designed to show off the power of the gamecube
they also had a role in making the megaplex (or something like that), the first ever home video conesole
any strategies for the dark link event in melee as in trying to get a best time?
nintendo did alot of that kind of thing in melee. melee was the first game for sale to feature roy. his game was only in production at thte time.
same here =) i also like when he says " A NEW RECORD!!!!!!!!"
every time I watch a ssbm or ssbb behind the history i can relate to it (SSBM or SSBB). and I get better at it.
i would like to add that at a gamecube tour a demo featuring 128 little marios was there. the title was super mario 128
super mario 128 was an gc tech demo to show the game cubes power. its enigine got reworked to sunshine
Hey CCC I noticed In the Adventure f Link Event, it said Everyone has a Darkside, Link has 2. That could be why he has two Lives representing the Dark Link From Either Game.
i like in brawl how you can acually play as dark link as one of his colors. he has red eyes though
In Super Mario 128 tech demo for the gamecube, it had exactly 128 little marios running around to show off the power of the gamecube.
Just my two cents.
I was playing the Peach's Peril event match and beat it in an unexpected way. I suddenly heard the Starman music and thought Bowser had touched one...but it was actually Peach who was invincible!
1:55 Pikachu is so cute wearing Ash's hat!
3:00 HELLOOOOOO NURSE!!!!
4:20 Yeah, the E3 trailer for SSBB made it obvious enough. SSBM barely mentioned it, and SSB, Nada.
4:22 Good Night Everybody!
11:45 No No No No No, Pikmin. You don't remember the tech demo?
dont forget that slippy also designed fox and falco's blasters and reflectors
Kay, nevermind, Virtual Boy was 32-bit.
I can't believe I completely disregarded it.
Maybe I just thought the "virtuality" makes it 3P1C-bit.
Super Mario 128 was a tech demo that eventually formed into Pikmin
slippy: this baby can take temperatures up to 9000 degrees.
fox: it's over 9000!!!!!!! (arwing explodes)
You missed that the name of the event match Super Mario 128 could be a reference to the Mario 128 Gamecube Tech Demo.
Great video, though!
0:41 Samus: Oh GOOOOOOOOOOOD!
Nop, Samus appears as a doll in that-weird-guy-who-wanted-to-marry-peach's hotel. Link appears in the inn near Geno's Woods. And if you try to talk to him, the "secret" sound plays :D
old games were the best all the flipping secrets and stuff made them the best
Peppy: What!? That can't be right.
Level boss is watching like Goku was.
I totally thought Peppy was gonna say DO A BARRELL ROLL.
another thought about the 128 is their first console was 8 bit and the stage resembles the 16 bit version of mario bros 2 more and 8 times 16 equals 128 but it probably was just about super mario 128
Event 3 - Bomb-fest:
ADVANTAGES: The enemies favour down-special attacks
Correction:Everything but the "A whole damn lot on screen" thing was changed. You now know the game as "Pikmin".I mean, why else is Olimar so similar to Mario?
he was director b4 youtube made it so no vids over 10 min is allowed
It can take temperatures up to 9000 degrees...oh...so now I get it, it wasn't just the Scouter Fox has in common with DBZ!
ITS OVER 9000 DEGREES when the arwing exploads from heat
I heard another reason Mario 28 was there was to show the GC could handle having 128 enemies
yeah I was thinking that
How do you get past event match 20? I finished Peach's job on Hanenbow, but how do I get past that? It won't go any further. (at least not yet, anyway.) (Also, How do you get Wolf? I have every character excpt him.)
Super mario 128 was a techincal demo used to show the power of the Nintendo gamecube
yeah the closest thing to SM128 is SM Sunshine, but the N64 generation was the last one to make particular note of the processor size of consoles so...
Never. But I maintain that he says Boo-yah in Melee when you forward-smash or taunt.
wuz the F-Zero comic based on the F-Zero game on the SNES or F-Zero X on the N64?
I believe you saw "What if Fox, Falco and Wolf had their N64 Voices in Brawl"
Don't you get it? It's all about the graphics (GPU or graphical processing unit), not the CPU (or central processing unit). Super Mario Sunshine was released for the Nintendo GameCube, which is one of the home consoles that has a 128-bit GPU, while Super Mario Galaxy was released for the Nintendo Wii, which is one of the consoles that has a 256-bit GPU.
At 3:18 it mentioned Team Shikamaru and Deer Force. Shikamaru's from Naruto, and shika means deer.
@fireluigi12
Not really, it was a canceled game for the Nintendo 64. It was a game where you had to control a army of mini Marios. The idea has taken form though, since it has been used to create Pikmin.
Maybe a reference to the unreleased game super mario 128 for the gamecube? The one where the tech demo showed 128 marios running around on some platform. If you don't know what I am talking about look it up.
SNES. People usually throw away manuals, because they think they already know how to play and don't care much about its plot.
0:51 does using Young Link's bomb-throwing ability count in this event match? Because Young Link uses bombs for one of HIS attacks as well. And Peach will sometimes throw a bomb instead of a vegetable for one of her attacks.
where does Slippy analyzing the shield come in?
So THAT'S the secret behind the Cloaking Device... Wow. I never would've guessed! (Refrains from posting spoilers!)
@fireluigi12 Apparently some physics technology from SM128 found its way into Metroid Prime.
That monster CF killed looks like King K. Rool, especially at 5:03.
Did you know that Boo's laugh in SM64 is Bowser's laugh sped up?
Mmm.. Super Mario 128 was the first title nintendo wanted to give the to the sequel of Super Mario 64, I loved when I saw it in the name of an event match!!!
Girl Power (8-S !!!
how do you unlock that?
(and link´s adventure where he fights with dark link.)
Or, the fire tunic for the volcano in Orcarina of Time.
You know. If you Z/L Target Dark Link in Ocarina of Time he can predict and counter your every sword swipe. If you don't target him you can fool him.
Wow, long gap between videos, dontcha think?
how did you get to the fire level with slipy still on the team? when I got to that level, it was because he was hit by a boss and knocked in to the planets orbit and was trapped! Also, how do you get to the water planet, i could'nt get there. By the way, would'nt it be cool if you could use the blue-marine in starfox assault? XD
At 10:30 , Famicom was spelled "Famicon", with an N.
Well, technically, it DID come out. It was just renamed Pikmin!
peppy: slippy isnt such a srew up after all
me: HES NOT!?
I think Melee's event matches are impossible. In the King Of The Jungle one, you're the GIANT DK. In the All-Star Match 1 one, you're timed and the timer DOESN'T reset when you move on. How do you KO Captain Falcon in less than 7 seconds? And how do you keep a Yoshi egg from breaking?
@fireluigi12 That is wrong,Super Mario 128 is a tech demo, which later became pikmin.
"Personally, I prefer the air".
they sounded a lot alike, my bad, I guess I'll just have to keep searching. Oh well, it's the closest match I've found so far.
X(
what? no, its a refrence to the tech demo/unrealesed gamecube game super mario 128. where 128 marios where running around on a disc. pats of it where implemented into sunshine (physics engine), galaxy (shere waling), and most of all, pikmin (pretty much everything else).
Is it possible to kill bowser before time runs out on peaches peril?
Not to mention it was pretty much Pikmin. That is confirmed.
No, bro. the red outfit for link is a reference to ocarina of time's Goron tunic.
Um, I may be wrong but I think they just renamed Super Mario 128 "Super Mario Sunshne", which is for the 128 bit gamecube
wrong actually the owner of nintendo miamoto, announced that most of us actually had played 128, but not in its orgin form. it was actually turned into pikmin
Why did you quit this app?
Sega Genesis 32x.
There was no 32-bit system from Nintendo.
And IMO, I think that was a wise choice.
Super Mario 128 was a beta thingy for pikmin.
There was also a game called Super Mario 128 that became Pikmin!
