    In this Luminar AI photo editing tutorial I edit another viewer photo. This one is a bird photo sent in by Leanne Xiu to anthonyeditsyourphotos@gmail.com. I walk through a lot of the basics through to slightly more advanced editing but it's all super easy to follow. The resulting cropped photo has a very low pixel count. It is seriously low resolution, so I demonstrate the amazing power of Gigapixel AI from Topaz Labs with does a mind-blowingly good job of up-sampling photos to larger sizes. It's well worth checking out!

    When I first started using gigapixel I thought I was better off just enlarging something twice size. But then I realized if I were to enlarge it four times or six times that gives the program more pixels to work with and to make more detail, it actually really works better the more you enlarge.

    Dear Anthony,
    Thanks for another outstanding tutorial. I am amazed at the amount of information you can fit into your videos. I have two questions:
    1. I liked the way you used the clone tool. Had you considered using the erase tool instead of the clone tool to remove the bright spots in the background?
    2. My experience has been that Topaz Gigapixel AI works better on RAW than JPEG. In this case, you would have had to use Gigapixel at the outset. What are your thoughts? Otherwise, would you have derived better results exporting the edited photo as a tiff file?
    Thanks, again.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi there. Thanks for the kind words. I always do my best to fit in valuable info as best I can. So to your questions... 1) Yes I tried the eraser. The results weren't as good. 2) I'd need to dig deeper into that raw vs jpeg scenario, but yes if I had the raw I would use that for sure ahead of a jpeg. Not just for Topaz but for the full edit in Luminar too. I'm always working on my RAW versions wherever I can. 3) Exporting as a Tiff isn't really going to add much because we don't have the extra file data, bit depth etc. to save anyway. The jpeg export is fine in this case.

      @@AnthonyTurnham I think he means to use gigapixel on the photo before its been cropped at all . I did read a few article a few years back relating to this that you should edit, enhance etc before any cropping has been done and then at the end of a edit to then do the cropping and sharpening. I dont know if this still holds true or not...Any thoughts? It had something to do with retaining all the current pixels in the image as a whole and not deleting them first.

    Great info as Im always learning …even tho Ive had Luminar for some years I haven’t quite grasped it as simply as it seems. Might be my macbook is bit old . Im using Neo now. So my question is when i take some beach shots and i try to put them up to print /enlarge to canvas or large prints my printing app says low resolution 😔( havent done any real editing at that point like Neo ) …. So disappointing when others come up fine no low resolution warning . Would GigaPixel A1 correct that issue ? Or do I need to use both apps ? Im not often cropping an image. Im bit lost Im afraid . Many thanks Anthony …aussie fan here .

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tracey. Yes, Gigapixel would definitely resolve that problem. Printers like files to have a certain amount of pixels for every inch of printing. Too few and your photo will not look good. Gigapixel can enlarge the photo (with or without Neo) to any size up to 6x bigger.

    Really enjoy your videos. I too enjoy photo editing and am a big fan of Luminar & Topaz products. There is one thing I have always wonder about editing, is it better to enlarge the photo and then edit it; or as you did in this video, edit the photo and then enlarge it? I mean isn't that the whole hype about RAW files, there's more information for you to work with.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety +1

      If I had the raw file I'd still follow the same method of edit first, and then enlarge. And absolutely a raw file is going to give you so much more latitude to boss that file around during the edit without introducing bad artifacts - like we see on the birds chest that I have to fix up with local masking.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety

      Hi mate. I shot weddings for years on 2 x 24mp D750s and that was ample for printing albums and the occasional canvas too, so I'd say you'd be rocking a good mid-resolution sensor there. Nice! Nowadays, I'd consider small sensors those spitting out sub 16mp files. But image quality comes down to other factors too such as how sharp your lenses are, how stable your technique is etc. etc. And whether it's considered small comes down to your end goal. If all you ever want to do is upload to instagram then 2mp might do the job 😉👍

    I like these detailed tutorials however I don't have this amount of time to spend on editing photos! If I spend half an hour or even 15m on each photo then I might as well give up. Other than that, I always enjoy watching your professional tutorials!

      Hi Dave. Thanks for the comment. Yes, I get you! Most of the images I chose to show on the channel are ones that NEED fixing in some way. For most of my photography I'd never dream of indulging in these kind of lengthy edits. Inside a minute for most shots is what I aim for, sometimes just a quick preset that deals with the technicalities of exposure, contrast and shadow and highlight recovery is all that's needed.

    With gigapixel if I post the after photo will viewers see more noticeable detail and sharpness than if I posted the before photo. I have a Panasonic fz1000 with a 400mm zoom. When I take photos of birds I run out of zoom very fast and have to crop alot to get composition I want.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety

      Hi Charles. It depends on the resolution you're wanting to post at. If you're zooming on an original and it's losing detail in the version you share, then, yes, gigapixel will be able to upscale it with better detail. It's ideal for images that you're applying heavy cropping to.

    Excellent tutorial, I have Luminar Ai but find it very slow even on my high spec computer, so not used it very much for that reason, hope the Neo version will be better. Can’t see the link for Gigapixel, would like to support you with buying a copy via your link. Best wishes and keep up the good work.

      Glad I’m not alone. After all the frustration and total bs from Skylum I’ve come to the conclusion that AI was schemed for Mac. Even after their “updates” I still experience crashes and slow processing. As you add more masks you are guaranteed to crash
      Funny that all the ambassadors never experience as much as a fart friend AI.
      I broke down and bought the Neo at discount. Must be a glutton for frustration. Guarantee no matter how crappy it is they will never recognize an issue. Would love to see anybody YT AI or Neo on a PC

    Hi Anthony, have you tried Topaz's other products? Apart from Topaz Gigapixal AI I also have Topaz DeNoise AI, Topaz Sharpen AI, Topaz, Topaz Adjust AI, all of which I'm happy with. However, as I wrote in my previous post, I'm not happy with Topaz JPEG to RAW AI, it seems a waste of money, luckily I only downloaded the trial version. Could you comment on these editing packages Anthony? 😸😸 By the way, I don't like these new emojis, they are not as cute as the old ones. Felix the Cat. 😺😺

      Hi Felix. For you, I will certainly endeavour to cover these products too. Yes, I'm familiar with all - apart from the jpeg to raw (because I've been shooting all my work in raw for 15 years or so, so I haven't needed that type of product. But I'm happy to take a look. I've got a lot on at the moment but leave it with me and I'll try and get some content produced going forward. Thanks for your support as always. And yeah, the emojis aren't the best. It's so hard to create something impactful and recognizable with just 16x16 pixels!

  • @osomax

    I tried LAI, the software is very good but it is tremendously slow and that is the biggest complaint of its users, besides, they never finish fine-tuning the software that they already release a new one with another name. They end up confusing users and also force them to pay for other software to have features that could have been implemented in the previous one. They are absolutely messy, they have to dedicate themselves to improving what they are already selling and not "inventing" a new software per year.
    The AI is also not that it contributes much, nothing that cannot be done with any other software.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety

      I think the way Luminar AI's core engine is set up means that the AI is pretty processor hungry. This causes the bottlenecks unless you've got a relatively beefy system. This was the reason for rebuilding the foundation of the program - I covered this in the first vid I did on it if you wanna check it out.

I've got more out and about on location vids I want to do and also some vids on techniques for shooting - they're all currently on hold due to my time being spread so thin. A couple of months until NEO and Ill defo be doing some vids around that and I'm sure it'll be a worthy successor to Luminar 4.
