The energy and pure enjoyment that radiates from the band during this performance creates something that in my opinion will never be surpassed. This whole gig is "in the zone". You should definitely check out Tunnel of Love from this gig next, and I whole heartedly recommend Private Investigations, and Once Upon A Time In The West, all from Alchemy Live.

The album version of this song is 14 minutes 18 seconds, but it certainly is one of Marks masterpieces, but he wrote many more great songs, even in his solo career after Dire Straits

I was just 18, Terry Williams on the drums was the standout for me. Which is amazing because the whole band were SO GOOD

Hey I love your reaction. That was awesome. This is my favorite band of all time. This whole concert is unreal. Other great Dire Straits performances that are out of this world is Money For Nothing - Live Sydney Final Concert 1986, as well as Tunnel Of Love from same concert and from the concert called Dire Straits- Live On The Night 1993 a song called Calling Elvis is mind blowing. These are very easy to find on CZcams. 😊 All DS performances are great though, just my biased opinion lol. Cheers from Oz 👍👍

Mark Knopfler wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang it and played it.
The mans a genius, no other word for him.
He's 72 now and I think just retired...

No quite true as he's just recording the new album in his British Grove studio. Check out Guy Fletcher's diary on that. He might retire from big tours though. But I'm sure he'll have some gigs here and there in 2023 once the album's out

Good morning! New subscriber from New Jersey. Telegraph Road is a real place, in suburban Detroit, Michigan, USA. Mark wrote the song after seeing that the decline in manufacturing, which ravaged England, was also happening in America.
I saw DS in person for the only time in my life on their "On Every Street" tour on Monday, March 2, 1992 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. They completely rocked the sold-out venue. This. Song. Is. Epic.

Telegraph Road is an 80 mile stretch of road that crosses through three Michigan counties. Technically it is highway US 24. The song talks about the road that became the main highway people took to get to the city of Detroit and the auto factories. The man with the "sack on his back" is a reference to Henry Ford.
I used to drive down Telegraph Road to go to work at the Ford Headquarters in Dearborn, MI. That drive was more stressful than the job. BTW, my job accountant job was sent to Hungary in 2008.

Great, great, great review!!!! I LOVE that you let the performance play all the way thru before reacting. I agree with you 100%. This is a classic. Yes the pianist is a professional, not just a keyboard player like most. This is one of the greatest and most under rated groups of all time and this entire performance at Alchemy is maybe the greatest performances I've ever watched and listened to. I loved watching stumble for words as you tried to express your excitement aetr watching this. Most of us totally understand!!! Damned hard to put into words!!

Great reaction...love it, pure and simple, no need to apologize :), TR is really a true masterpiece... if you want a love song from DS to react, go for "Tunnel of Love", live of course...Otherwise DS is a "blood in your vein" when you start to discover them (for me for almost 40 years)...

I have always considered Mark Knopfler to be more of a composer than anything. He surrounds himself with fantastic musicians and seems to reinvent his classics with a slightly different sound for each tour.

More of a composer? He is a premier guitar player with musicality, viruosity and genius to boot. In my opinion there is no one like him or as good as him in every aspect.

I, like some of my friends, consider Telegraph Road the most beautiful piece of music in history, I'm sorry that many don't know it because of its duration and consequently never played that we eat what we are given and not we choose it more. Thanks Mark, always.

I absolutely love this song, have done so since it was first released. I adore all the members talents and their music but I love how Alan who plays the piano makes use of the pauses at times when it's his turn to solo. He will play a few notes then stop a couple of seconds then play again. The use of silence in his playing is as important as his actual playing. His piano playing holds the whole song together, don't get me wrong mark and his guitar playing and Terry on the drums are brilliant and John and Hal are just as important but the piano in this was just amazing. Have hear this entire song played on piano only with no other instruments and you realise then how important it is.
I grew up listening to just the studio version until 2022 but once I saw this version it's like WOW. If I gave the studio version 10/10 I give this version 12/10. It's like the studio version but on steroids, if this was a car it would be like it was using turbo, supercharger and nitrous oxide all at once.
And also the full studio version is 14:21 long .
