  • Is a Fox Float DPS Factory rear shock really worth it? How can I justify spending $500 to replace a Rockshox Deluxe Select shock that functions just fine?

    Keep in mind you might need to use volume reducing spacers, to get the support and sensitivity you need. Lower the pressure plusher it is, but easier it buttoms out and less support you have, but by reducing the volume you increase the support, thus can run lower pressure. But some shocks use two air seperate chambers you can pump up, these shocks don't. But the ones that do allow you to do the same using air pressure which eliminates deflating the shock and installing spacers every time you do an adjustment and need to test it. So you can do it easily on the trail. Only need a shock pump.

    • @QeX9
      @QeX9 Před 2 lety +8

      lower pressure plusher it is, is very misleading piece of information. It is true only to some extent. If somene setup shock by that thinking lower presue=plush he will quickly find out it is not true and it is terrible idea. If you go too far above 30% sag you will sit too deep in the travel which means every bumb you counter will feel terible and harsh because you are already hiting ramp in air spring curve, it will have terrible traction it will feel harsh and dead, it will be anything but plush. If you want plushier feeling you need to increase negative air chamber, some shock have that some dont, I believe if you install megneg can on that deluxe shock it would be on pair or better than that fox shock for 1/4 price, of course when we are talking about descending perfomance. I recomend everyone to try very high sag and full toknes in your shock and ride it, then set let say 26-28% sag with less toknes and you will find out which setup is more comfortable. You will get a idea and you can more easily fine tune to you preference. In general lowering pressure too much and increasing volume too much is terrible idea for "sensitivy and support".

    Your RS rear shock´s maybe a little too harsh, but I dont think that´s the only reason for the loss of nearly 30 seconds to the Fox Factory rear shock.

    Evan, I wanted to let you know that Kashmia coat is not made by Fox. It’s a private company that has the secret sauce to create that coating that has the lowest coefficient of friction possible. They won’t share their proprietary coating secrets but it is extremely hard for them to keep the gold color the same. But it’s a sacrifice fox is willing to pay to have the smoothest travel which in return creates a more predictable tune and ride.

    I don't think these two shock are comparable nor are they meant to be. The Fox is much better but I can understand many riders may not need it or want to pay for the additional features and performance. If it gets improved tracking when riding more gnarly -rockie tech trails, then that is what counts more than speed in my opinion. I think a lot about how to ride without injury and have been hurt a lot by bad tracking, so I see spending more on a shock is for more than cushy climbing and faster descents. Also, if you have the desire to learn suspension set up then there is some value in having more compression/ rebound settings. The Fox Float DPS has 11 slow rebound settings and 3 fast compression settings in addition to 3 slow compression settings. That is more tunable than the Rockshock you are comparing it to.

  • @BlackFlag94
    @BlackFlag94 Před 2 lety

    These videos are so tough to be done "right" but I think you did a pretty good job.
    The only thing that seems to be missing from your setup is talk about volume spacers. Correct setup should be about setting sag, riding, checking bottom out, changing spacer, etc. Ideally set your sag and use 80% travel on a normal, tame trail. On a gnarly trail you want to use about 95% leaving you a little room for error. Then adjust damping to suit and compare.
    I know this adds more time to the comparison but it'll pay off in the long run.
    I'm 10 months into ownership of my Trek Fuel EX 8 and I've finally got my suspension to 95% of where I'm happy. increasing the volume spacer by 20% and dropping air pressure by 5PSI made all the difference and now I have a much higher ride height despite very similar sag which means less bottom out, more real world travel and better mid stroke support without the harshness.
    Sorry for the HUGE comment, I just love everything suspension and tyres :P

    • @jonathanbaxter6254
      @jonathanbaxter6254 Před 2 lety

      Nope, you set up your sag to be at 20 to 30 percent, set rebound accordingly, and add volume spacers according to how strong of a rider you are. Otherwise, your setting your sag to the trail, not you. Most of the actual fine tuning of this should be about better or worse after changing one thing slightly on the same section of trail, not by checking bottom out. Just listen to any podcast by an actual suspension designer and they will tell you that.

      @@jonathanbaxter6254 I've read what you have to say and I understand where you're coming from. All I'll say on the matter is, you need to know where you're aiming for. If I setup my bike to what I think is right for my level and ride it at my local trail I might use 70% travel, take it to Dyfi and I blow through my travel, take it to Whistler and tackle A-line and I've smashed through my travel before I've even left the lip. You have to factor in where you're riding otherwise you'll end up with a bike more harsh than required or so plush it can't cope on the really gnarly stuff.

    Hey Evans I know the non- matching kashima sucks but you could apply a small amount of golden paint, then apply some primer to it. I know there could be more friction between the stanchion and the body so you could however process the stanchion and sand it before applying the paint. And if it is too risky you can always put some only on the body! Hope it will give you a new video idea!

    I upgraded rear shock on my T7 and while it’s definitely nicer, I don’t think it’s worth the investment. The RS deluxe select+ is a pretty nice shock and you can add volume spacers to fine tune it. I think that money is better invested in a wheelset upgrade

    • @DQridesbikes
      @DQridesbikes Před 2 lety +1

      My t7 came with 3 volume spacers installed already. I took them out when i installed the megneg and it's been great.

    I would love to see what the difference is with the Rockshox if you add the megneg kit and tune it. Its only $100 and completely changed how my super d works on my polygon. It is incredibly progressive for my degenerated l5. I was bummed when I installed the super d ultimate and it felt like garbage for the first 30% until I installed megneg

    • @OmarJGill
      @OmarJGill Před 2 lety +1

      The shock on the polygon can’t use the Megneg kit as it’s only avail for shocks with 47mm stroke and above. The Polygon’s shock is 45mm

    The Shock maybe $500 but you can sell the Deluxe for $300 so the delta is $200. Easy upgrades if you can sell the parts.

    Fox air cans and damper bodies use a different allow than fork stanchions so the Kashima coat has a different finish.
    The bearing mount is an aftermarket part so the previous owner just neglected to remove it. Very few bikes come with the bearing kit installed.
    Please do not clamp your damper body in the vice. Even with soft jaws you are asking for trouble. 1 single nick and you just blew upwards of $200 and a month of riding.
